Hello! Happy Summer! We have a Call for Art for next Community Show SOUNDS OF SUMMER, opening August 2nd. All artists are invited to create pieces on 7 inch salvaged records. Do your cool art thing and paint, glue, collage, draw, felt, melt (safely) or whatever else you can dream up, on your record! This time around we do have space for a limited amount of sculpture entries so read on below for the specifications. Records are provided with entry fees and can be picked up at Variable Creatives during business hours. Link is in bio to register and gives all the guidelines. Details are also listed below:

Guidelines:

Entries are $15 for the first entry, $5 for each additional entry. Each entry comes with (1) 7 inch record.

100% of the sale goes to you! We want to support our artists with this one!

All entries must use the 7 inch record as the primary, featured surface.

The piece can reach over the sides of the records, but no more than 10 inches. All hanging pieces must be 10 inches by 10 inches or less. All Sculpture pieces must be 10 inches wide by 10 inches deep by 10 inches tall MAXIMUM and be able to sit on a shelf.

(4) 2-D entries maximum, (1) Sculpture entry maximum.

No sexual content. Art must be respectful of all groups. No room for hate here.

Foster businesses are on the move! For those just getting caught up, here’s a quick rundown of recent business openings and relocations:

🔸 Cowlick Barbershop () recently moved into a larger space not far from their previous location. You can find them in their new, renovated barbershop at 5925 SE Foster.

🔸 Taking over the vacated space where Cowlick was, Word Virus Books () has moved around the corner and now has a Foster-fronting location. You can find the bookstore at 6518 SE Foster.

🔸 Polished in Portland () also recently relocated into a larger space, moving a few doors down. You can find the nail salon at 6012 Foster.

🔸 New to Foster is True Bodywork (). This message therapy studio recently opened in the former Polished in Portland space and can be found at 6004 SE Foster.

🔸 Also recently opened is Bruno’s () bar & restaurant. Bruno’s is in the corner space at 6258 SE Foster (right next to .francisicecream).

🔸 Now that it’s official, we’ll also look forward to the eventual move of Speedboat Coffee () into their new and renovated space on the corner of SE 60th & Foster. For now, you can still find them in their current home at 5115 SE, but stay tuned for updates on the move.

Foster really was on full display this weekend.💪🏽And what a scene it was. Truly special!💕 We couldn’t be more grateful for everyone who made the Foster Summer Soiree what it was.

This year’s event brought together over 40 local businesses, just as many local artists & vendors, fun entertainment & activities, and put a spotlight on this super rad community. Foster truly is a special place, and this event was testament to that.

🙏🏽We want to thank everyone who stepped up to create some magic on Foster. Here are few we’d like to highlight:👇🏽

✨First and foremost, thank you to all the amazing businesses that participated. There would’ve been no Foster Summer Soiree without you.👊🏽Whether you opened early for the day, stayed open late, hosted pop-ups, DJs, specials, or gave out treats to visitors, it was the backbone of this event.

✨Thank you for the support. We couldn’t have pulled this off without the generous grants we received from you.♥️

✨We love this community. We are so grateful for the people who live, work, and play in this neighborhood. We may love Foster for different reasons, but we all know it’s special in its own unique way and appreciate it for that same reason.🤙🏾You all know how to show up for a good time and support local businesses. Special shout-out to the volunteers who came out in the morning to pick up trash and tidy up a bit.🧹

✨ In addition to our local small businesses, we are so appreciative of the artists & makers who also make Foster extra vibrant. Thank you and all the vendors who spent the day on Foster selling their wares.

✨Thanks also to and for helping us secure space at Laurelwood Park, as well as the street closure on SE 63rd, for the community to enjoy. It was buzzing all day.

✨Shoutout also to the musicians & entertainers in Laurelwood Park, the random buskers on Foster that added buzz (especially saxophone-playing Waldo), sidewalk DJs, etc. So much good energy.

Let’s do it again next year, yeah?!?!

So many fun activities are planned for this Saturday.🤗In addition to live music and entertainment at Laurelwood Park, we want to highlight a couple free attractions that you’ll also be able to find there during the Foster Summer Soiree:👇🏽

📸 will be parked with us from 12-5pm and provide free photo sessions and themed photo strips. This old VW has been converted into a Photo Booth and will be a great way to capture your memories of the day.

📚 will have Scarlett (the Japanese fire truck turned bookmobile) parked with us from 12-5pm and giving away free & diverse books to kids.

Make sure to swing by Laurelwood Park Saturday during the Foster Summer Soiree! We have a rad collection of live music and entertainment—a little something for everyone.👏🏽🎸🎵

We’ll also have vendors lining the sidewalk, seating areas, balloons for the kiddos (while supplies last), free Photo Booth sessions (w/ ), and more.

Performance schedule:

✨ Mick Forstag is on at 12pm, and he’ll rock out with some golden oldies, R&B, and more
✨ goes on at 1pm with a groovy mix of chill-electro beats and hip hop
✨ take over at 2pm with their mix of clown show, singing, comedy, and more (they’ll also be in crowd post-performance to make balloons)
✨ Nic Johnson & Friends go on at 3:30; their jazz band mixes influences in funk, world, and reggae
