Odin and Sheila, welcome!
Fun morning here at Free Your Mutt!
Pushy Mushy is in the house! Welcome back bud 🥰
Mom is on vacation and asked if I could do a refresher while he’s boarding with me, and of course I wouldn’t say no to that! Love this crazy boy.
Molly here is very reactive, on leash and off leash. Reactivity can become an issue out of frustration, fear, anxiety and/or excitement. Molly is naturally a bit suspicious, enjoys control but also wants to play and greet dogs. With the right approach Molly will be able to walk without having outbursts and create so many more friends. Today she gained another friend, my boy Rabbit!
*Don’t mind the messy house 😤
Practicing place around the other dogs for the first time. Good job Willie!
Willie is here for dog reactivity and resource guarding, but what we will mostly focus on for the next week is small steps towards desensitization as well as a lot of confidence building and marker training. We can’t only focus on the symptoms, we need to focus on why he acts the way he does. Willie is super sensitive, confused and insecure and we won’t (and can’t ) fix that by only correcting his aggression when he “acts up”. We need to clear up confusion, teach him alternative behaviors and create a safe environment where he gravitates towards curiosity.
Dottie’s second lesson went fabulous today and we learned how to redirect her attention away from triggers and have better handler focus, as well as place! She did so well, and so did her parents 🥰
Had a great second lesson with Percy and her mom Sarah. We discussed development stages, trigger stacking, how to change emotional responses, handling exercises, and more. We covered a lot since they did really well with their homework last time.
Ronnie learned some leash work and markers in our session together yesterday! We will continue our work together to build handler focus, leash manners, eliminate her reactivity to a point where they can walk around distractions. We got this! 💪
It’s important to keep a senior’s mind going! Luna here is struggling with beginning stages of dementia and she’s deaf. We are playing some kind games with post it’s notes while the rest of the dogs are waiting patiently.
Activities like these can help our senior dogs to keep sharp, active and engaged.
Play hard and work hard 😜
Odin is here for Marvelous Mutt program! We will be working on boundaries, obedience and handler focus. He’s such a good boy!
Well behaved dogs watching us cook dinner. Can you count how many there are? 😉
Mr Darcy showed off his new found confidence today! He has made such a turnaround! Before training he would get spooked by anything and everything and has had times when he went into panic to run away from his triggers. Today Darcy and his dad, Will, showed off that he can now pass street cars, busses, dogs, birds and squirrels as well as busy streets in downtown Portland. Well done 👏
This week is the week of toy dogs at Free Your Mutt 😍🥰 I just love them, and I love training them!
Small dogs need training too! It’s not always for us people to have trained dogs, but it’s for their own wellbeing. 😍
Magnum has made such improvements since his board and train with me earlier this year. He had potty training issues, reactivity towards people and dogs, and did not get a long with his dog siblings at home.
Magnum still has some sensitivities and triggers, but don’t we all? 😂 We all need to understand that genetics and behavioral challenges/issues can’t just go away, even with extensive behavioral modification. We can’t turn an extremely sensitive dog into an extremely sturdy dog. We can desensitize, change perceptions and build confidence, but we can’t modify genetics.
Thank you for taking the time to read.
Handsome Milo 😍

Today I had a follow up lesson with May. Her people are doing such a good job with their training. May is working on her reactivity towards dogs and people, and her owners are learning important handling skills to be able to help May change her perception of her triggers. Even though there is a lot more work to be done, she has made huge progress.

I will miss this guy! Mooncake is just about 5 months and stayed with me for 3 weeks. He is going home tomorrow! He came in because he was barking at everything and wasn't able to be focused. Look at this cute boy now! . #cavapoo #dogtraining #portlanddogtrainer #mudbay #portland #puppy #doodle

This is a silly little video of me and Milo practicing"middle" and "behind" in a new environment. These two positions can be very helpful for reactive/fearful dogs. To position them behind you makes dogs often feel more protected and secure. Plus teaching middle is a fun little party trick, because it's cute! . #maltipoo #smalldogs #doodle #dogtraining #portlanddogtraining #koruk9portland #koruk9

Here I am teaching a small exercise to Augie's owners on how to better use our body language to give our dogs better guidance. This exercise is to help our dogs be guided to fall behind us, or right next to us, if they have a tendency to move in front. It takes practice to get this one down, but becomes super easy once you get the muscle memory down. And a tip to any new dog owners out there: start training early! It helps to prevent a lot of unwanted behavior and helps create a stronger and better bond right off the bat. . #freeyourmutt #puppy #goldenretriever #portlanddogtraining #portlanddogtrainer #dogtraining
