Denali was in this week for her preventative wellness exam, and it was clear we had an URGENT medical issue! ๐Ÿ˜ณ

She was completely depleted of her essential cheese allowance! ๐Ÿง€๐Ÿง€๐Ÿง€

After supplementation from our veterinary care team, she was able to bounce back right away! โค๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿ‘

Luckily, Denali will recover....but preventative care examinations are definitely recommended to reassess the situation every 6 to 12 months! ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ

Are your pets overdue for their preventative care exams? Regular examinations can help us catch medical issues early and allow us time to evaluate preventative measures for dental disease, arthritis pain, and a host of other age-related issues (as well as cheese deficiencies...).

๐Ÿ“žCurrent clients, please call 971-371-4024 Ext 6 to reserve the time, date, and doctor that works for you!

Update on Avian Influenza in our local cat population!

Department of Agriculture has reported that two cats from different households in Multnomah County became ill with Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI H5N1) after eating the same raw food: Wild Coast LLC โ€“ Boneless Free Range Chicken Formula, Lots #22660 and #22664 โ€“ Best By Date 12/2025. Both cats were euthanized due to their illnesses. If you have either of these food lots, stop feeding it immediately.

Tips to help protect your pet from HPAI:
* Do not feed your pet undercooked or raw meat, including uncooked or freeze-dried meat-based diets, treats, or animal products.
* Do not feed your pet raw (unpasteurized) milk or colostrum.
* Prevent pets from eating birds or other wild animals.
* Wash your hands after touching raw meat and after interacting with poultry, livestock or animals outside your household.
* Consider changing clothing and shoes after interacting with animals or birds with unknown health status and before interacting with your own pets.
* Contact your veterinarian if your pet appears sick. Tell your veterinarian if your pet has been exposed to raw meat, raw milk, or wild waterfowl.

๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸNew Pain Management Modality at Viking Veterinary Care!๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ

The Assisi Loop Lounge provides nose-to-tail Targeted Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (tPEMF) therapy to reduce pain and swelling while accelerating healing. This modality works differently than our Class IV laser, but can be used at the same time for optimal pain relief. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

The Assisi Loop Lounge can be used for a wide arrange of conditions, including:
๐ŸฉบPost-surgical recovery
๐ŸฉบWound care
๐ŸฉบSpinal and nerve disorders
๐ŸฉบInternal inflammation
๐ŸฉบArthritis pain
๐ŸฉบBone, joint, and soft tissue injuries

The Lounge can be safely used with animals who have undiagnosed masses or a history of cancer. It is contraindicated for pets (and around people) who have electronic medical devices, such as pacemakers.

For a limited time, we'll be offering 15-minute Lounge treatments for $10 during our appointments and surgeries. Please let us know when scheduling if this is a modality you are interested in so we can make sure it's available!

Biscuit hunting a biscuit๐Ÿ‘…
(Swipe right while humming the the JAWS theme song!๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿฆˆ)

Does your pet have a special treat they go bonkers for? A toy that makes them feel safe? A blanket that smells like their favorite human? Feel free to bring it to their appointment!

Our team is happy to work WITH you to keep your pet as comfortable as possible during their visit with us!

This means:
โคKeeping them in the exam room with you for their treatments.
๐Ÿง€Using positive reinforcement like treats and praise.
๐ŸฉบRecognizing when a pet has reached their threshold for the day.

Our goal is to keep our patients running to the door and for appointments to feel like a visit with old friends. Thank you for seeing the value of our Fear Free approach!

Muskets FIP Treatment Update! ๐Ÿ˜บ

Muskets was started on her Feline Infectious Peritonitis treatment, GS-441524 (the active metabolite in remdesivir) from on 12/31, immediately after developing fluid in her abdomen (see our previous post regarding FIP and this new treatment option).

**Within 48 hours, her abdominal fluid was resorbed.
**Within 72 hours, she was eating regularly and had more energy.
**At 3 weeks, you'd never know she was sick with a potentially fatal virus.

The medication comes as a tuna flavored quad-tab or liquid suspension, and Muskets doesn't seem to mind as long as it's wrapped in turkey sandwich meat using the "empty, empty, pill, empty" technique (with a little finger nibble at the end to ensure the turkey is gone). ๐Ÿ‘…

Cats being treated for FIP must stay on the anti-viral medication for 12 weeks, adjusting for weight each week. During treatment, it's recommended to avoid stressful events, as this can cause a relapse that may or may not respond to higher doses of the medication. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Veterinary Medicine has come a long way in the treatment of this disease! While treatment can cause increased risks or certain medical issues as she gets older, it looks like Muskets will get to grow into adulthood! ๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธ

When it's not just calculus...๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Many pets will develop calculus over their back molars, and sometimes it's from mineral deposition. But this is also an area where dogs will break their teeth or cats will have resorptive lesions. ๐Ÿฆท

We can't ever tell what is under the calculus, until it's removed, as was the case with Rey. She had secretly been struggling with a fractured tooth with exposure right into the pulp cavity! Ouch! โšก๏ธ

Yes, pets will still eat with dental pain. Some breeds will power through any discomfort and not show clinical signs at all. ๐Ÿ’ช

So what's the best way to assess this? Regular dental cleaning as recommended by your veterinarian and routine home care to assess the mouth for changes (calculus build up or fractures).

Muskets came home with Dr. Rosie from a wine tasting trip. These things happen to veterinary folk. ๐Ÿท๐Ÿ˜น

She'd had an unknown trauma to her eye that was removed prior to her adoption in September. Over the past few weeks, she developed conjunctivitis, vomiting, diarrhea, a decreased appetite, and was VERY lethargic. Her kitten antics had stopped and she slept most of the day.

Her bloodwork showed increased white cells, anemia, and increased globulins with our main concern being Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP). Her belly started filling up with fluid the next day. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

FIP is a coronavirus mutation. Most cats will be exposed to coronavirus over the course of their lifetime, but mutations on the surface of the virus can cause it to change from a virus of the intestinal lining to one that can replicate in certain cells of the immune system, resulting in a "wet" or "dry" form (or both).

In the wet form, the vessels become fragile and leak blood proteins and fluids into body cavities, causing abdominal distention and difficulty breathing. The dry form can cause granulomas on the organs, neurologic signs, and changes in the eyes.

This condition used to be fatal-most of us have had to euthanize young cats with FIP. In the last few years, antivirals against coronaviruses have been studied for this condition, including GS-441524 (the active metabolite in remdesivir). This medication has not been approved by the FDA and was difficult to obtain legally.

Veterinarians and cat owners were in quite a predicament-the only option was to refer owners to Facebook groups where non-veterinarians orchestrated the black-market sale of unlabeled, untested vials of medication costing thousands of dollars with no guarantees of safety or efficacy and little recourse in the case of a poor outcome. Sometimes this was lifesaving, but obviously not ideal.

Then on June 1st of 2024, the FDA notified veterinarians that GS-441524 could now be compounded legally in the US with "no enforcement actions". UC Davis is still working with the FDA to earn approval, but for now it is available via , just in time for Muskets.

"Look into my eyes and give me ALL the toys...YESSS!" ~Kiki

Kiki was recently in for her kitten appointment so we could set her and her family up for success! She enjoyed the cushioned surfaces, calming pheromones, a variety of treat options, relaxing music, and the "Cat-Only" exam room for her first visit!๐Ÿ˜ฝ

Since vaccines in kittens and puppies are time sensitive, we save a few appointments a week for our pediatric patients. Contact us today to save a spot for your newest addition!

Anyone know an Australian shepherd who values personal space? Nope, we don't either. ๐Ÿ˜†

Frannie was in for her spay with Dr. Rosie (and her morning snuggles). What a great way to start the day! ๐Ÿ˜˜

Our entire team is committed to protecting each patient's emotional, mental, and physical well-being...which means surgery day doesn't have to be scary!๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

Keeping pets' stress level low prior to anesthesia = No big adrenaline rush = less medication needed = SAFER ANESTHESIA!

How can you help make your pet's surgery day as low-stress as possible?
โ˜‘๏ธGive the pre-op medications as prescribed on an empty stomach.
โ˜‘๏ธBring something from home they find comforting (toys and blankets are welcome!).
โ˜‘๏ธDrive calmly with soothing music on the way, giving yourself plenty of time to arrive safely.
โ˜‘๏ธSome pets benefit from having their owners with them during the initial sedation. Let us know if this is something you'd like to do!
โ˜‘๏ธIf pre-op diagnostics are completed and your pet may get stressed in their kennel, we can arrange a later admit time if this works for your schedule.

We want surgery day to be as low-stress as possible for YOU too! Please feel free to ask us questions about your pet's procedure! ๐Ÿฉบ

"While it's fun to be a fashion icon, sometimes you want to stay home and relax with friends." ~Jyn, modeling her tie-dyed donut AND blue camo recovery suit

When recovering from surgery, it's a great idea to have several options for post-op incision protection, including cones, recovery suits, and sometimes donuts. Preparing your pet with some trial runs, especially with a recovery suit, can help recovery be less scary. And don't forget to utilize your post-operative sedation and pain medications!!๐Ÿ’Š๐Ÿ’ค

Let us set you and your pet up for a Fear Free recovery! Bring your questions to the pre-op appointment, or email us at [email protected].
