North Spore Mushroom Cultivation, Foraging, and Education What began as a love for mushroom foraging has developed into an obsession with all things fungi.
(84)

Our mission is to provide access to the mycological world through innovative mushroom cultivation, spawn production, and research. North Spore is the brainchild of three college friends with an admiration for all things related to the mycological world. That passion for foraging has evolved over time: these days any of us are likely to be found in our cultivation rooms growing oyster mushrooms, sh

iitakes, lion's mane, chestnut mushroom, king trumpets, and pioppinos, or tincturing the myriad medicinal polypores that grow in the Maine woods. Maybe we are at Fork Food Lab in Portland sautéing sh*takes with mirin and tamari; or perhaps it's the dried porcinis and chanterelles from our last mushroom walk that are taking the stage. North Spore produces 100% of the spawn used at its facility and also makes sawdust, plug, and grain spawn for other commercial and enthusiast growers. We take our commercial spawn customer's needs seriously and are fortunate to have both a mycologist with a Master's Degree in the field and a trained lab technician overseeing our in-house laboratory, culture bank, and spawn production. Regardless of whether we are sharing our favorite mushroom dishes, our knowledge of mushroom foraging and cultivation, or simply our overwhelming admiration for this often overlooked biological kingdom, we are striving to be a community hub for fungi enthusiasts; a place where people learn to love mushrooms as we do.

If it’s too hot where you are to start outdoor mushroom projects - growing oyster mushrooms in buckets indoors is a great alternative. You can do them indoors or outside, and move them as the weather permits. Depending on the size, they can fit into a BoomRoom II if you remove the shelves, giving them an even higher chance of success!

For information on this technique, check out our blog post on growing mushrooms in containers: https://northspore.com/blogs/the-black-trumpet/growing-mushroo...

Black trumpet and chanterelle mushrooms are highly sought after by foragers, especially during the summer months when they are most abundant. Black trumpets thrive in mossy forests, blending in with the leaf litter due to their dark, funnel-like shape. Chanterelles, with their bright golden-yellow color and fruity aroma, are a easier to spot and typically grow in clusters near trees like oaks and pines. Which one is your favorite?

If you have some outdoor space, friends, and a little bit of time, we highly recommend inoculating some oak logs with shiitake spawn this fall. Even better if you have a stream to soak them in later on down the road 😎

Grow mushrooms ✅ in summer ✅ in a hot, dry place ✅

Throwback to Nate making a pink oyster bed in San Diego a couple summers back 🌞 straw and/or wood chips are the way to go, and Nate supplemented this bed with our Wood Lovr, hard wood-based substrate, to give the mushrooms extra support. He also grew wine caps and Italian oysters in the same yard, so that should answer your questions about what you can grow in the heat of summer 😎

It’s reishi season! Lou of North Spore found this young reishi here in Maine recently. This is Ganoderma tsugae, and it grows on hemlock trees in spring and summer months throughout much of the world in temperate and some tropical zones.

Perhaps the most well known property of reishi is its ability to support the immune system. It does this in a two-fold manner. As an immune modulator, it both boosts the system when it's struggling and reins it in when it's overactive. For this reason, it's a popular supplement to cancer therapy. Additionally, studies have shown that reishi may help lower cholesterol, regulate blood sugar, support liver and lung function, and provide antioxidative protection from free radicals.

Wouldn’t you like your refrigerator to look like this?!

Check out 's (on Instagram) golden oyster haul from the garden, including a bed and basket grow. You can store your mushrooms in the refrigerator for several days after harvesting - we recommend keeping them in a brown paper bag - but for longer-term storage, you can dry, freeze, pickle, ferment, or can them.

Lion’s mane (Hericium erinaceus) also known as monkey head mushroom has been used as both food and medicine in China for hundreds of years, with its history traceable back to the Sui Dynasty (521 - 618 CE).

It was traditionally used as a tonic for supporting overall health and longevity. Buddhist monks reportedly used its powder as a tea to enhance brain power and heighten their focus during meditation. In recent studies, this mushroom has been found to impart a variety of benefits, including potential neuron growth in the brain, ulcer prevention in the stomach, and anti-inflammatory properties which help protect cells from damage. In New England, lion's mane is also known as the bearded tooth mushroom or Satyr's Beard, and can be foraged from standing trunks or fallen logs of hardwood trees from August to November.

Pretty stoked to announce the launch of our redesigned line of organic, gluten-free medicinal mushroom tinctures - including the debut of our newest: turkey tail! Turkey tail is also now found in our Immunity Blend.

We designed our tinctures with simple ingredients for flexible dosing, so you can choose your regimen more efficiently. You can try them individually or combine them for a personalized blend.

Consistency is key for optimal results. We recommend alternating tinctures for the best benefits: 4-6 weeks of one (e.g., Lion’s Mane), followed by 1-2 weeks of another (e.g., Cordyceps), then resume the first for another 4-6 weeks.

You can put tincture in any recipe or drink of your choice ☕

A new generation of self-sufficient mushroom growers is blossoming! With modern techniques and a deep respect for nature, they are harnessing mushrooms’ transformative potential for sustainability and environmental restoration. We are excited to see the future mycologists they become and feel honored that some of them may have gotten their inspiration from North Spore 🍄😁

Will from North Spore dug a 2x2 foot hole about a foot deep just below his plant pots and filled the hole with a mixture of blue oyster grain spawn, compost, and leaf litter (mostly oak leaves) in mid-April and 3 weeks later these big, bountiful beauties popped up!

The weather here in Maine has been very mild and wet - perfect for mushrooms. He got about a pound of mushrooms from this flush 🍄👍

As studies continue to explore reishi’s multifaceted health benefits, it is increasingly recognized and utilized in various forms, including supplements, herbal remedies, and pharmaceutical formulations, making it a staple in modern wellness practices. Its physical beauty inspires art as well!

Some of the latest research from this year has posited that Ganoderma lucidum may have potential as a therapeutic agent for arthritis and as a preventative and/or treatment for inhibiting oxidative stress and promoting cell survival. Ganoderma tsugae is being studied for its potential in inhibiting reduced pain sensitivity in the aging process.

Anybody else have some new studies on reishi that they’d like to share? Comment below and check out our species spotlight on reishi: https://northspore.com/blogs/the-black-trumpet/species-spotlight-reishi

These Italian oyster mushrooms were grown from a straw bale under a tarp, despite 100F temperatures in a California summer! Oyster mushrooms are adaptable and vigorous, so if you’re inoculating beds or straw bales right now in hot, dry places - you may find some fruiting this summer. Pink and golden oysters are a good choice as they prefer to fruit in the heat.

If you’re inoculating straw bales, we recommend using sawdust spawn instead of grain spawn - grain spawn can heat up the bale and kill the mycelium. As usual, be sure to keep it shaded and watered. To learn more about growing mushrooms in straw bales, check out the “gardening with mushrooms” link in our bio.

Wow a long weekend at the High Caliber Maker's Camp but super fun and great people! Thanks North Spore for sponsoring the Mushroom Growing tent! Lots of new Mycologist! The biggest take way was that most did not realize that once you innoculate a log you never have to do it again! Its a one and done thing. Then, depending on the type of log, you have mushrooms for years to come!

Oyster mushrooms like these pink oysters can easily be grown in buckets using cold-water pasteurized straw with hydrated lime and sawdust spawn.

A pH of 12.5 is recommended, and a 5lb bag of sawdust spawn is more than enough for a 5 gallon bucket!

The winner of our most recent indoor growing contest is James P. with his indoor wine cap! 🍄

It’s always exciting to see an outdoor-loving species growing indoors, and vice versa. Wine cap typically prefer the conditions of outdoor gardens and beds, however James used cold-pasteurized straw, as well as layers of CVG (coco coir, vermiculite, and gypsum) and dirt, to grow them indoors in this small monotub with our sawdust spawn.

We’ve seen wine caps in monotubs, outdoor beds, garden paths, and plant pots - have you grown them somewhere else? Let us know in the comments!

PS: don’t forget to get some good pictures of your outdoor projects this summer - our next contest will be “Best Outdoor Grow” 😌
