Genovia, a dignified 7-year-old Akita, is a gentle giant with a playful side. She's friendly, active, and easygoing, making her a wonderful companion for the right family. While she's an alpha female, she can coexist peacefully with certain dogs and has even shown kindness to a shelter cat.
Genovia loves playtime! She enjoys chasing balls, playing with plush toys, and engaging in energetic zoomies. She's also a fan of head scratches and belly rubs. A quiet home with minimal distractions would be ideal for this lovely lady. Despite her age, Genovia is still quite active and would thrive in a semi-active home. She's also a great fit for seniors, as she's calm and obedient.
Genovia's previous owner has sadly passed away, leaving her in need of a loving and caring home. If you're looking for a loyal and affectionate companion, Genovia may be the perfect match for you.

Our little, adoptable turkey Clover would like to let everyone know that our boarding wing is officially booked solid for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Boarding fills up quickly these days. Please call in and let us know about your requested dates as soon as you know! Especially for major holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and 4th of July.

Ms. Lorelai and her little Noodle spent some time playing together in the office yesterday. With all of Noodles siblings in happy homes we thought it would be good for him to spend some time with a familiar face, his momma ❤️🐾

Our sweet buddy Jasper has had a hard time since his best friend was adopted. If there were ever a time to adopt a dog it would be now ❤️🐾

Kids: 12+ for now, has previously done well with kids but he needs time to decompress, establish routine, and continue his work with training.
Cats: Interested but not aggressive. A dog savvy cat will do just fine with him.

This darling girl, Nala, is full of wiggles and smiles. She displays her happiness so well with peppy zoomies around the office and then cuddles in close for some love. Nala adores people of all ages, is friendly with dogs, and is respectful and kind to our shelter kitty. She seems to be easy going, social, silly, confident, obedient, and a rather calm dog. A family who likes to play and get outside would be so great for her!

A heartwarming update on Memphis 🩵

You may recall Memphis, a special pup who came to HSAR as a puppy and was later returned due to some reactivity issues with other dogs. With the patient guidance of our dedicated staff, especially Vanessa, and our volunteer trainer, Hannah, Memphis made significant progress.
We knew he needed a quiet home where he could adjust at his own pace. Thankfully, he found the perfect match!
We’re thrilled to share this recent update from his loving family.

If you've been thinking of adding a new dog to your family please consider the ones who have been waiting for a long time. Jasper, a resident at HSAR for 2 years, is patiently waiting for his forever home. This social butterfly thrives around people and gets along great with other dogs. His gentle personality makes him a joy to be around.

"Just giving you an update on Memphis he is doing so well, and in fact he is getting all muscled up, even his head got bigger! Haha
My sisters came to visit me and they just fell in love with Memphis and gave him non-stop hugs and cuddles for the two weeks they were here. Everybody falls in love with Memphis when they see him, kids adults you name it, and slowly he's been getting used to other dogs and has taken a liking to a couple of females in the neighborhood, but I would say he is fully adapted to his new home and we love Memphis being here!"

A sneak peak of the crates, ramps, sliding dog door inserts, bowls, beds, and sweaters, etc that will be available this Sunday at HSAR from 10am-2pm. We also have hand painted mugs, art prints, collars, harnesses, doggy diapers, and a bunch more up for grabs. We will only ask that you leave a small donation in exchange for whatever it is that you find to be useful! Some of the items are brand new!

Please come on by Sunday! Help us declutter before winter!

We ♥️ our volunteers!

If you've ever had an interest in socializing or training with dogs in need or have wanted to be a part of the adoption process please consider submitting a volunteer application with us! We are in desperate need of adoption counselors who can help pair dogs with families. All volunteers go through training with our kennel managers, volunteer trainer, or a board member who has years of experience with adoption counseling.

It would mean so much to us to have a bigger list of people to reach out to for adoptions, especially. And all of our dogs could use some new friends who can help them relax and work on behaviors while they wait for their special someone. We're not sure why Jasper hasn't received an application 🥺 he's a great dog with a social and friendly personality. He loves other dogs and his best friend at HSAR is in a foster to adopt home now. We're so happy for her but hate to think of him not having that special playmate in his life while he waits for a family. We hope that he finds a wonderful home soon. A pretty girl with a solid fashion sense 🤭

Lorelai has a whole new wardrobe with the cooler weather coming in but we think she looks best in green and in a loving home 😎

Lorelai is a gorgeous, friendly brindle girl looking for a home where she will be treasured. As a silly and confident dog, we know that she will bring laughter and joy to her future family for many years. She's been good friends to other dogs and was confiscated with her pup, Rory. She was even gentle and a bit fearful of our shelter kitty. At 2 years old she's already got sit, shake, and down figured out with more room to learn. Lorelai loves playing ball, treats, nyla bones, cuddling, squeaky toys, and meeting new pals. She would be well matched with an active family who will be kind and loving toward her.

Treat request! ♥️🐾

Our pups need some treats to learn new tricks! We have techs assigned to each dog at HSAR and volunteers who use treats too. This helps us to train and work on manners before a dog is adopted. It would mean so much to us and our dogs! We prefer small, stinky, chewy treats for training like Blue Bits or Merrick treats. But we also like to give crunchy or chewing treats, too! How in the world is this dorito chip eared darling still looking for her loving family?!

Clover would love love love to meet you!

We believe Clover would do amazing in a home with littles or seniors, she enjoys the love and pets from any age! She did so well in our kennel managers car during her transfer process, she defines the word chill. Like most other pups Clover thrives on treats and stuffed toys, she would really like a place for all her toys to go!

Clover's adoption fee is sponsored! Her adopter will not need to pay an adoption fee to take her home. We are so grateful to the Oltmann's for this donation as well as her previous foster parent.

Age: 4 Years
Other Dogs: Not at this time. Clover will need time to decompress before interacting with other dogs.
Cats: with supervision and training we think that she could live with cats.
Kids: Yes! We think she will do well with kids and in a semi active to active home with seniors. She loved spending time with one of volunteers littles, they "had the best time with her."
Weight: 45 pounds, she's already gained 10 pounds with us but will need to gain a couple more.
Leash behavior: Walks fairly well on leash. Occasionally pulls but is responsive.
Home Type: Semi active- Active. Would be great for a family where someone works from home or is retired and active!

Sweet Cheeks at your service! This darling, 8 month old girl is just dying to be your best bud! Our techs describe her as friendly, active, silly, and submissive. While she does well with other dogs, she seems to think she's a human and she really enjoys their company. When she met our shelter kitty she did a big bow and tried to initiate play. She's a pup at heart who loves pets, attention, playing ball, toys, cuddling. She can sometimes get impatient with happy jumps but that is very easy to work on and overcome. She was found as a stray in Chester and ended up at our local shelter. We recommend a happy, active home for her where she will get lots of time with her people and new friends.

Age: 8 Months
Mixed Breed: Shepherd Mix
Other Dogs: Friendly with other dogs, seems to like people more
Cats: Friendly with our shelter kitty, wants to play
Kids: OK with all ages, may jump on small children over while excited

If you're looking for a beefy boy with a heart of gold, we've got just the guy for you! McRib is a friendly, silly, confident, and active dude who is looking to complete a family. He likes to play ball, cuddle, play with all kinds of toys, receive treats, jump into water, and spend time with people. McRib is such a happy guy overall, and he's going to be an excellent companion for whoever is lucky enough to adopt him!

Mr. Chicken (now named Moose!) found his very own coop to roost in with lots of friends 😍

This sweet, shy little boy was the first of his litter to find a beautiful home. He is coming out of his shell everyday and becoming a more social and comfortable boy. We are so proud of him and we are so grateful for his adoptive family. We hope they have many happy years together. Round of a-paws for Moose! 🎉🐾🎉

Our 2024 Retriever's Ball was a blast this morning! Scout was adopted from HSAR a few years back and proved herself once again at this year's ball. She had an incredible time choosing the winners! A great, big thanks to our fundraiser donors @tahoejaycerealestate @thesardinelakeresort and Abby for these prizes. Additional thanks to everyone who made a donation with hopes of winning, volunteers who paddled and gathered balls today, and to our retriever, Scout. The Retriever's Ball is back! 🔴🟠🟡🐾🐕🟢🔵🟣 Every year we release hundreds of numbered balls (up to 1,000!) into the Mill Pond in Graeagle, CA and then ask a helpful pup to retrieve the winning balls. This year the drawing will be on July 26th. You can donate toward this fundraiser and read more about it at highsierraanimalrescue.org Each donation will be recorded on our numbered tracker. Then a pup will jump into the Mill Pond and retrieve a handful of balls that are marked with the corresponding numbers. We will take a video of a rescue dog fetching the numbered balls and announce the winners on July 26th! Each ball is $5 You need not be present to win, the Retriever's Ball is more of a virtual fundraiser. Please note that we will not be able to mail large prizes so a local pick up or drop off would be best. 100% of proceeds will directly help the dogs in our care!
