Best Girl Cauliflower has been doing fantastic in her foster home these last few weeks. She’s recovered nicely from the surgery she had to remove the dead and ouchy parts of her ears, and tomorrow she’ll undergo another surgery to open up her ear canals to prevent future chronic infection and a spay surgery! Tomorrow will be her THIRD, and hopefully last, procedure on her ears to get her back in tip-top shape. Send all your healing vibes and good thoughts to her magical medical team at Pungo Veterinary Clinic, who’s been caring for her and will perform the surgeries tomorrow.

We also have to give a huge shout out to the team at VCA Airline Boulevard Animal Hospital who was able to fit her in with no notice after we first received her. They’re ALWAYS ready make time for our animals whenever something walks in the door that needs immediate attention, and we’re eternally grateful! (And - we can’t wait to show you what we’re sending to their office tomorrow. Spoiler alert: it’s gonna be gross!)

To celebrate her health and decompress a little before her surgery, Cauliflower got to spend some time at MJ's Tavern today, getting belly rubs and extra good vibes.

Since we got little Rue back home after a week of being lost, we’re feeling pretty lucky. Anyone know where these pups’ families might be? They’re so sweet and well cared for, we find it hard to be believe someone’s not looking for them!

- 2 male labs
- 2 Rottweilers
- 2 lil pitty girls (sorry, we only have a photo of one girl at this moment)

They’ve all been with us a couple weeks, but hopefully we can get them home!

Holy cow - we can’t believe it - but this little girl’s “little” girl just came and picked her up. 🥹 Rue, as this tiny beast is known by her family, deserves an award for the heartwarming reunion we just experienced. We’re glad you’re heading home, we hope we don’t see you too soon! 😉

What strikes fear in the hearts of animal workers across the land?

Is it pitbulls? No.
Is it grumpy cats? No.
Is it infectious disease? I mean, ya, for sure.

But above all, it’s the mighty Chihuahua known to send a chill down the spine of even the most seasoned shelter, daycare or veterinary staff.

This fierce beast got separated from her family. And to put it quite delicately, she’s pretty displeased with the matter.

If you know this dog’s owner, tell them to come reclaim her at our shelter. If you want a dog that will beg for your sandwich, whine at you for not paying attention to her, but will absolutely not let you touch her check in with us next week after we’ve given her family some time to reclaim her.

(PS before anyone gets mad, we’re mostly joking. Don’t get all fussy - we love chihuahuas just as much as the rest of the dogs.)

We’ve had a strong start this morning, and we’re so grateful to everyone that’s visited so far.

We cannot emphasize this enough - there are LITERALLY PALLETS-WORTH of brand new pet items!!!

Our yard sale is scheduled from 8 AM - 2 PM tomorrow, we hope you’ll join us!

Grease Lightning (who just departed with his new dad!) is showing off a sample of what we have available (cats and comfy beds, hahaha!).

An online retailer that has a local warehouse had to make space, so they donated PALLETS of BRAND NEW pet supplies. We’ve got beds, toys, gravity feeders and MORE BRAND NEW pet products PRICED TO SELL. The best news - all the money you spend goes to help pets like Grease Lightning!

(Our adoption hours are still 12 PM - 5 PM, so please note that the animals will NOT be viewable before noon!)

Callie is BIG MAD that it’s Monday. We tried to tell her: don’t worry, it’s a holiday, you can sleep in.

But now she’s even more mad that we’re closed, and she won’t get to meet her new family.

The shelter is closed for adoptions in observance of Labor Day. We’ll resume normal adoption hours on Wednesday.

Someone please come adopt Callie on Wednesday, so she’ll stop using her grown up words on us. 🫣

Sunny and Honey Bun are forever besties. They lived in a home with way too many dang cats (yes, it’s possible to own too many cats, it’s not possible to LOVE too many cats though!).

They’re available for adoption at our PetSmart Adoption Center at Chesapeake Square! Stop by and visit them! ❤️

Update: welp, it seems we were hoodwinked. These dogs were found ON THE EASTERN SHORE. So if you’ve got friends up that way, we’d appreciate if you’d share these two to help them find their way back to their home and rightful owners.

These two cuties were brought in this morning and they seem to be lost! If you know their parents, let them know they’re with us and to come snag them asap! We will be working with our friends at Eastern Shore Regional Animal Control Facility to work out the best course of action to help them find their way home ASAP!

No collars or microchips. Both dogs seem to know one another.

Update on the sweet girl with the ouchie ears from last week:

Cauliflower, as she is now known, had a nice weekend at the shelter getting some bandage changes and R&R. Things got even better for her when our Shelter Vet committed to fostering her. She got to fly the coop, and she’s living it up with a stellar medical team to tend to her wounds daily.

She still has a long road ahead of her, with surgeries and more recovery. She’s a trooper, and she’s got a a whole village behind her! ❤️

There’s a lot of “stuff” that goes on behind the scenes that we don’t ever think, or even have time, to share!

Today was one of those days. We met some neato new animals, we saw some animals go to homes, and we did a little “shelter shuffle” to get some homeless animals in the best place for them to get adopted!

We took two cuties, Lithium and Space Cadet, to one of our nearby shelter partners, and while we were there, we gave a little cutie Frenchie with some ouchie legs a ride back, for our friends at Compassion For Canines, where she will ultimately land.

We’re always working behind the scenes on creative solutions for finding our pets loving homes, and our relationships with other shelters and rescues are one of the ways we make this possible!

Best girl Clea went on a field trip to the BEACH! She loved the sand in her feet, exploring and even found joy in going for a SWIM!

This little cutie girl was posted on NextDoor, and we’ve received many emails and inquiries about her.

This sweet girl was found as a stray in Portsmouth today with some seriously yucky injuries to her ears. We wanted to let her fan base know that she was delivered to VCA Airline Boulevard Animal Hospital and received treatment for her injuries.

She’s back at the shelter recovering, but she will require additional surgeries down the road to help her recovery. We promise to keep you updated.

ETA: The ACO the picked her up named her Cauliflower. ❤️

Uppercase Callie has been promoted to Office Assistant. She takes her duties seriously, spending her days organizing papers, sniffing out snacks and creating general chaos.

Uppercase Callie is a delight. Funny, charismatic, and 100% calico. She can be a loud and opinionated diva when things don’t go her way (like when she tries to scratch the office chairs, gets her nails stuck, and then starts screaming like a banshee but won’t let anyone help).

She’s available for adoption! You have to ask for her by name because administrative duties keep her very busy, so she isn’t housed in the cat adoption room!

Atlas went on the ultimate field trip today! First, he visited Richmond SPCA to help deliver two special kitties, Erry and Otala.

Then, he popped over to Sanctuary Rescue to deliver some goodies and pick out some delightful treats for the dogs back at our shelter!

You can take a dog out on an adventure, too! Paws Around Ptown allows members of the public (18 years and older!) to es**rt a dog around out on an adventure for the day! Whether it’s popping out for a pup cup or hiking a trail, they love taking a break from shelter life and seeing the world

Mara Jade and Kimber are two sisters-from-another-mister that love the finer things in life - soft beds and good snacks.

These two good girls prefer a good butt scratch over a long hike, but will oblige you for a nice short walk and a long nap after.

We know you’re wondering: Do they love each other? Yes. Would they like to stay together? Yes, please. Do they *need* to stay together? Probably not, but it sure would be nice.
