We’ve been blown away by the overwhelming support we’ve received in light of our HVAC challenges.!

We’ve received many many wonderfully perfect blankets to keep the dogs warm and cozy. We’ve worked with several news outlets to help share what’s happening here at the shelter. So so many HVAC companies have reached out to us to offer support.

And, most importantly: TWELVE DOGS HAVE GONE INTO FOSTER! These dogs heading into foster reduces the load on our team as we navigate around those massive space heaters!

THANK YOU to our community for your extraordinary support!

(Fifi is pictured as she’s picking out some toys before she heads to foster. We’re excited to report back on her mini vacation!)

Triostar was found this weekend by a caring stranger who noticed that he’d somehow hurt his leg.

Our friends at Caring Hands Animal Hospital evaluated him and did some x-rays, where we learned that the poor fella has a nasty break! Within the next few days, he’ll have surgery to have his leg amputated, and he’ll be on his way to living his best life, minus one foot!

Kennel Update!

The main HVAC unit in our main dog kennel is still down, but the space heaters are definitely doing their job!

Our shelter is still open for adoptions, but we’ve had to slightly modify the process for dog meet-and-greets. We ask for your patience and understanding if you visit our shelter over the next few days!

We’d like to express our sincerest gratitude to the City of Portsmouth, VA Government, Police and Fire, for jumping in on Friday to help us get solutions in place quickly to warm up the dog kennels again!

So far FIVE dogs have gone into foster care, and we are enchanted by your support! If you are able to foster a dog for one week to alleviate some of the load for our team while we navigate our heat being down, please visit our shelter between 12 PM - 5 PM to grab a foster dog (check our post from yesterday for details!).

Our heat went out, and we need your help!

Yesterday, the heat in our main dog kennel decided to settle in for a winter nap. We were very lucky to find some swift solutions to get the dogs nice and warm, but until we ensure that our normal system is functioning properly, we could really use MEDIUM TO LARGE DOG FOSTERS ASAP.

We’re asking YOU to foster a dog today - here’s what you do:

- come to the shelter today (or tomorrow) between 10 AM - 5 PM. Let the staff know you’d like to foster a dog.
- We’ll have you review and sign some paperwork, and set you up with ALL THE SUPPLIES YOU NEED.
- Take a dog home for ONE WEEK - that’s all we’re asking.
- Because of the urgency of this request, we cannot facilitate meet and greets with resident pets. We’re asking temporary fosters to plan to keep the shelter dogs separated from their resident pets
- Take TONS of photos! Post them to our Portsmouth Humane Foster Squad page!

While our kennels are at a nice temperature and our wonderful Board Member and Friend, Council Member Amanda Newins, brought a ton of new blankets for the dogs, there’s nothing better than the comforts of a home to make the dogs feel comfortable and safe during this wacky time at the shelter.

Goober Doober is feeling a little nonplussed, as foster dad told him he's only getting sparkling cider for the ball drop tonight.

Before you return to the hustle and bustle of post-holiday life, we want to remind you that good girls like Beth are waiting to meet YOU at the shelter!

Beth is a sweet, laid back hound dog. Beth was part of a “shelter swap” a few months ago with our friends at Isle of Wight Animal Shelter. Sometimes, great pets get overlooked at the shelter they landed in, so we’ll “trade” to give the animals a new audience!

Beth spent many months in foster care before coming to our shelter, and her foster family had great things to say about her! Come by to visit Beth and her many friends from 12 PM - 5 PM today and through the weekend!

Our puppies and kitties (and lil piggies) are all tucked in waiting eagerly for the Big Guy to stop by. They’ll get lots of snackies and chin scratches for Christmas, but the one thing these furballs didn’t get is a new home!

Our shelter will be closed Wednesday, December 25, but we will be open at noon on Thursday for you to come meet your new best friend!

This could be YOU getting cozy with your foster pet this holiday! We have A LOT of dogs and cats to choose from, and it's not too late to become a Festive Foster!

Festive Foster:

- Visit the shelter during adoption hours; bring a valid ID/drivers license (you must be 18!)
- Talk to our team about fostering - let them know what type of pet would fit best in your home
- We’ll have you fill out some paperwork, set you up with any supplies you need, and you can spend the holidays with a new bestie
- Schedule your foster pet’s return date
- If you find them a new family (even if it’s your own!) or wish to extend the foster period, bring your foster pet back on the scheduled date and we’ll update the paperwork!
- Take a ton of photos; share them on Portsmouth Humane Foster Squad

Together we can make a difference!

The Portsmouth Humane Society is a non-profit Virginia corporation. We depend upon charitable contributions to accomplish our work and on volunteer support to augment a very small paid staff. We were founded in 1889 and believe that we are the oldest continuously operating animal welfare organization in the Commonwealth of Virginia. PHS is dedicated to caring for homeless animals in the community by promoting their adoptions into loving, permanent homes. We also provide education and community outreach programs to help decrease the pet overpopulation problem.
