We are interested in helping you train your dog to be a well mannered family member and a source of pride. Portsmouth Chesapeake Obedience Training Club, Inc (PCOTC) is an outgrowth of the Gosport Obedience Training Club which was first formed in 1949. The original club disbanded in 1960 and was reorganized in 1964. The club then adopted a new Constitution and By-laws and a new name which was appr

oved by the American Kennel Club in April 1968. PCOTC has been hosting AKC licensed Obedience Trials yearly since 1973. Many participate in breed specific sports such as herding, field trials, hunt tests and lure coursing. Still others are involved in conformation, tracking, flyball, and agility. The foundation for success in all of these venues is obedience training and many members actively compete in obedience trials sanctioned by the AKC and ASCA. The club participates yearly in a variety of community events offering obedience demonstrations at events such as Suffolk Mutt Strut and Bark in the Park. Some of our members have earned Therapy Dog International (TDI) certificates and their dogs visit local homes, retirement communities and area hospitals. We provide public education in canine good citizenship.

The 4th of July holiday usually results in an increased number of lost pets, making it the third top stray intake day of the year. Lost Pet reports an increase between 30% and 60% around the 4th of July.

As we gear up to celebrate Independence Day with fireworks and festivities, it's important to remember that loud noises can be extremely distressing for our pets. Sadly, many pets get scared and run away during fireworks displays.

Here are a few tips to keep your pets safe and calm during this time:

- Keep them indoors: During fireworks displays, ensure your pets are safely indoors in a safe, quiet space where they can feel secure.

- Identification is key: Make sure your pets have up-to-date ID tags and are microchipped. This greatly increases the chances of them being returned to you if they do get lost.

- Stay with your pets: If possible, stay home with your pets during fireworks shows. Your presence can provide comfort and reassurance.

- Create a calming environment: Close windows, draw curtains, and play soothing music or white noise to help drown out the sound of fireworks.

- Consult your vet: If your pet is particularly anxious during fireworks, consult your veterinarian for advice on calming products or medications.

Let's work together to ensure a safe and happy Fourth of July for all—including our beloved pets!
