We are interested in helping you train your dog to be a well mannered family member and a source of pride. Portsmouth Chesapeake Obedience Training Club, Inc (PCOTC) is an outgrowth of the Gosport Obedience Training Club which was first formed in 1949. The original club disbanded in 1960 and was reorganized in 1964. The club then adopted a new Constitution and By-laws and a new name which was appr

oved by the American Kennel Club in April 1968. PCOTC has been hosting AKC licensed Obedience Trials yearly since 1973. Many participate in breed specific sports such as herding, field trials, hunt tests and lure coursing. Still others are involved in conformation, tracking, flyball, and agility. The foundation for success in all of these venues is obedience training and many members actively compete in obedience trials sanctioned by the AKC and ASCA. The club participates yearly in a variety of community events offering obedience demonstrations at events such as Suffolk Mutt Strut and Bark in the Park. Some of our members have earned Therapy Dog International (TDI) certificates and their dogs visit local homes, retirement communities and area hospitals. We provide public education in canine good citizenship.

This is an EXCELLENT graphic!
Pay attention to what a dog is telling you. And teach children to respect a dog's space! Too many dogs end up in shelters (or worse, put down) because the adults in charge were not monitoring the child/dog situation.
Many times when a dog bites a kid parents say, “There were no warnings. He just bit him for no reason.”
The unfortunate truth is that there are almost always warning signs, but the humans miss them. This photo shows a few warning signs that the dog is uncomfortable and may bite.

Part of our mission at PCOTC is to give back to the community, so each year we make a donation to an organization who works with dogs. This year we chose Portsmouth Police Department K9 Unit. We spoke with the Sergeant to see what was on their Wish List that we could purchase for them.
Well, this morning, myself and another Board member Melissa Moore had the pleasure of presenting them 7 water bowls for the dogs kennels and 7 heavy duty KONGS that the dogs chew on stress relief. All the Officers were present except one (court duty).
It was a pleasure to spend time with these fine men and even got to meet a couple of the dogs.
Thank you to the two legged and the four legged Officers that protect the citizens of Portsmouth. We appreciate all you do.
