Dogs learn best and fastest by being coached through as many choices as possible. If dogs are ALWAYS put into commands like heel or place, they only learn the choices that can be made in heel or place, and you will still struggle with behavioral issues in the areas in between. You'll live a life I call "Command and Crazy," meaning that if your dog is not in command, they cannot remain calm and coachable.

This is where obedience can create false illusions. We can start to think we have successfully worked through behavioral issues because the dog can hold place for 2 hours or heel through a busy public location, but can the dog maintain a calm, coachable, and attentive mindset in the same environments when no command is given? Not that many of us can answer yes to that.

It is important to allow dogs to make choices and mistakes in real world situations (like when the doorbell goes off and guests are trying to come in) rather than always putting them on place. If we use our markers, leash, and body language to coach each choice they make, soon you'll have no need for the place bed because your dog will know all the dos and don'ts of guests coming over.

This is a throwback to Rocky (intense dog aggression). After all of choices had been coached hundreds of times, no commands were needed. Calm, coachable, neutral, and attentive.

Too many rules, introducing too many concepts too soon, poor body language and timing on the part of the handler, being too excited or not excited enough, expecting too much. These can be some of many factors that can shut down a dog's play game. Always read the dog in front of you.

Our Story

Method K9, LLC started in the summer of 2017 in an effort to clarify dog behavior for the everyday dog owner. Method K9 believes that proper communication is the basis for success with any behavior, whether simple or severe. They work with all breeds, all sizes, all problems, and hold a special place in their heart for dogs in the shelter and rescue system in need of homes.

Stephanie Vichinsky, owner and head trainer, is one of the leading dog behavior specialists in the Inland Northwest. She started her journey at a very young age with a strong passion for animals. She worked with her family dogs and realized she had a special connection with the animals. After high school, she knew she wanted to work with dogs on a larger scale and undertook the task of studying to be a professional trainer.

After having worked as the head trainer for a number of large facilities, Stephanie quickly became known as a trainer with a unique training style that made sense of even the most complex behaviors. She has successfully rehabilitated thousands of dogs in her career.
