Starting this month, Boehriger Ingelheim will be opening their study for testing of PPID (Cushing's disease). If you have concerns that your horse maybe showing symptoms of PPID, and is not currently on medication, your horse may qualify! This will be discounted testing, performed Monday through Thursday with Cornell Animal Health Diagnostic Center. Feel free to give our office a call to set an appointment!

Join us Saturday, April 15th from 8am to 11am, All Kind will offer FREE DAPPV vaccines for dogs in a drive-thru clinic at the Abilene Animal Shelter.

Vaccines will be offered on a first come, first serve basis. No registration needed prior to the event.

Vaccines are made available through the national vaccination initiative which is to provide 2 million pet vaccines to its existing animal welfare partners, including All Kind Animal Initiative, for family pets in need.

Look at your horse closely as compared to this Henneke Scale. Keep in mind winter is coming and hay prices are likely to go up. Is your horse prepared for the upcoming harsh conditions? What can you do now so hoss doesnt' lose weight over the winter months? Mine are on hay, grain, cubes & hay pellets.. just in case one becomes unavailable going into winter. Yes, it's a pain, but I owe it to my animals to make sure we're ready for anything. ;)

: Being able to assess your equine friend's weight and body condition is a valuable skill, especially as we head into the colder months. A horse with good body weight will fare better in winter weather than a horse on the skinny side, particularly if it’s an older horse.

The Henneke Body Condition Scoring Chart is an important tool that provides a standard scoring system by rating the horse's physical condition on visual appraisal and palpation (feel) of six key conformation points: the amount of flesh or fat covering along the neck; the withers; down the crease of the back; at the tailhead; ribs: and behind the shoulder at the girth.

A body condition score of somewhere between 4 and 6 is ideal for most horses. However, keep in mind that in some disciplines (like racing, polo and eventing) and some life stages (like pregnancy) a higher or lower body score might be more appropriate.

If you think your horse is too fat or too thin (or even if you are unsure), have a chat with your veterinarian to discuss the appropriate condition and a feeding and exercise program for your animal!
