Backwoods Taxidermy is a full time studio located between Potsdam and Canton.

We are a full service studio mounting deerheads, gameheads, lifesize mounts, bird, fish, rugs, European mounts, and novelty mounts. I have been in the taxidermy industry since 2001 and use the most up to date forms, products, and taxidermy practices.

Took a road trip to West Texas this winter break for Alexa’s graduation present - an Aoudad! And Parker was able to get a Javelina while we were there. We had a blast, and the scenery was breathtaking. The guide (Roy Hurley) and his family were welcoming and provided first class accommodations, meals, laughs and a hunt of a lifetime. We all had a great time!

Couple giant sika deer and a upset little bear mounted up the last couple days. Theses sika’s are some of the biggest I have had come in, really cool trophies!

Here’s the lineup for deer this year, few exotics mixed in, all the elk are in a different spot as well. Been mounting steady now for 3 weeks, lot of pieces ahead of me!!

Shana and I met Mason Smith in 2018 when he came up for a turkey hunt with the One Wish Foundation. Mason had an awesome hunt and killed 2 turkeys!! Over the years I have had the pleasure of mounting one of his turkeys, his buck, and tanning his coyote, all killed up here in northern NY. On Friday, we received word that Mason passed away, the day after his 18th birthday, after courageously fighting chronic myeloid leukemia for over 10 years. Our hearts absolutely ache with the passing of this bright, quiet, generous, kind, and witty soul. He was not one to smile much, but when we found the button he would smile for days (those who know, know lol). We will forever remember and cherish the fun times with Mason and his entire family during their visits. Mason brought the entire community together, was the spark that led to the creation of The Lodge at The Dreaming Tree Ranch, and will be the reason that we all will continue to do what we do for and with the families that come take a much needed rest at the lodge. Rest In Peace young man. We will miss you!

Been very busy in the shop recently, lots of great bucks and bears coming in. Had to pick up some trophies from the hunting preserve today, I’ve been told a few people noticed me on the way home😂.

With it being opening day Saturday, wanted to update everyone quickly. Hours have changed a bit, mainly on weekends, off from 3pm fridays till 4 pm sundays, gotta have some free time to spend in the woods with family/friends. Also when making appointments please try to be on time, very busy time of year and my days gets very busy and I like to be here and have time for everyone. Thanks and good luck everyone!!

Great weekend at the United Taxidermist of NY competition/convention. It was a fun show for all of us, and our pieces did great! Parker’s hooded merganser in youth division got a first place, best of category, and best of show youth. Alexas Spanish goat in the amateur division scored well and received a first place. My two fallows in the masters division both received solid second place scores. Overall a great show!!

“Quick” trip to the tannery and hunting preserve today. Dropped off hides at the tannery and picked up 70 that are ready to mount, and 5 more rams to get mounted from the preserve.

Took the whole crew to the hunting preserve couple days this month. We all had a great time , put some excellent meat in the freezer, and some cool trophies for the showroom. If anyone is looking for something different touch base and I can send you in the right direction!!

Want to thank the River Valley gun dog club and the St. Lawrence valley sportsman’s club for hosting this years youth pheasant hunt this weekend. The kids all had a great time and shot some great birds!!
