This little guy, Jerry, paid a visit to Dr Orban today due to an ongoing eye issue. Dr Orban’s veterinary expertise spans numerous animal species and he has a great amount of love for each and every one!

One of our favorite facts about bearded dragons is that their signature beard behaves almost like a mood ring, going black when the animal feels threatened, stressed, or aroused. During these various emotional states, its beard can also expand and the dragon can puff up its entire body to look big. In a calm and happy state, the pouch under a beardie's chin will be similarly colored to the rest of its body with spines that rest flat against its skin.

As you can see here, Jerry was just as happy to be visiting us today as we were to have him with us! 🐾🦎

*This patient was under sedation and the eye was anesthetized before beginning procedure*
Rare case of eyeworms here at P.A.W seen by Dr Orban! This was our second time seeing this within a year time span and we’d like to spread some knowledge and awareness about Eyeworms, also known as Thelazia californiensis. This is caused by a parasitic worm that infests the eye of dogs, cats, sheep, deer and other mammals which causes a disease known as Thelaziasis.
This condition is caused by being infected by a fly. Filth flies (including the common house fly) and possibly fruit flies serve as intermediate hosts and deposit the infective eyeworm larvae on the eye while feeding on the secretions from the eyes.
Some symptoms that may be associated with this is tearing, inflammation of the eye, ulcers, sores and itchiness of the eyes.
In the case of this patient, Dr Orban treated with Ivermectin injections and eye drops with a steroid after removing some of the worms while the patient was sedated and anesthesia was placed in the eye. He has been doing great ever since! 🐾

As Vet Tech Week comes to an end, let's be real for a second...
Who really runs the show in veterinary medicine? Spoiler alert: It's NOT us vets! It's our incredible veterinary technicians who keep everything moving like a well-oiled machine. From comforting your nervous pets to assisting in surgeries, placing catheters, taking radiographs, managing anesthesia, and calming anxious pet parents, vet techs are the backbone of every clinic and hospital. Without them, we'd be lost in a sea of charts, tests, and patient care!
The reality is no joke: we veterinarians would be NOTHING without our vet techs. They are truly the glue that holds every practice together. Their hard work, dedication, and expertise make sure every patient gets the best possible care, while they juggle a million things behind the scenes with skill, precision and patience. Whether it's holding down the fort during back-to-back appointments or staying late to make sure everything is set for tomorrow's surgeries, vet techs keep everything on track.
We may get the credit as the doctors, but everyone in the field knows the truth: vet techs are the true superheroes. So, here's a huge thank you for everything you do—not just this week, but every single day.
Vet Tech Week is a great reminder of how much we appreciate you, but honestly, it should be celebrated all year long! Thank you for being the heart, soul, and muscle behind veterinary medicine!

**DOG FOUND IN POUGHKEEPSIE**
Very energetic so difficult to get a good picture but a 2-3 year old Shepherd mix was found near our animal hospital last night on South Avenue in Poughkeepsie. She has a purple unicorn collar on, is not microchipped and appears to not be spayed. We kept her in the hospital overnight and any help finding her owners would be much appreciated! 🐾

National Black Dog Day! 🐾

Black is beautiful. Yet, black dogs statistically wait at least four times longer to be adopted from shelters than lighter coated and more colorful canines.
Studies show that superstitious people see black dogs as dangerous or evil. Other studies say that their facial expressions are harder to see, especially in the shadows of their kennel, so potential adopters don’t connect with them as easily as others. Lastly, studies also speculate that black dogs don’t photograph as well, so when they are featured on social media pages, they don’t catch the eye of potential adopters.

Frankly, the whole Black Dog Syndrome seems silly to us so here’s 10 reasons why we think you should always be open to adopting a black dog and giving them a chance at a forever home! ✨

(Featuring one of our very own staff’s black dog ❤️, we would love to see your black dog today to celebrate with us!)
