Animal Emergency & Specialty Center (AESC) of Poulsbo has provided trusted pet emergency veterinary care since 1993, serving Kitsap County and the surrounding areas. Few aspects of pet ownership are more frightening than an emergency when your family veterinarian’s office is closed. Animal Emergency is an emergency animal hospital that focuses on the treatment of trauma, critical care, and complic

ated medical problems. Animal Emergency and Trauma Center (AETC) was established in 1993 as a critical care animal hospital to care for your pet’s veterinary needs. In 2022, we grew to meet the needs of our community moving to a larger, state-of-the-art facility and adding specialty services to expand our offerings. Now, as Animal Emergency & Specialty Center (AESC), we continue work as a team with your family veterinarian, sharing information and common goals. A well trained, experienced, and caring team member can answer your questions and advise you regarding your pet’s problem. At AESC, our doctors and support staff dedicate themselves to emergency and critical care of companion animals. We focus on pet emergency and specialty care in and around Kitsap County including Bremerton, Silverdale, Port Orchard, Bainbridge Islands, Kingston, Belfair, Port Townsend, Gorst, Port Ludlow, Sequim, Shelton, Gig Harbor, Poulsbo, and Port Angeles. It’s and this week is - an important reminder to us all that many people are going through silent struggles. Our very own veterinary health teams are at particularly high risk due to stressful job demands and the emotional toll of providing medical care for animals in need. However, anyone can be susceptible to suicidal thoughts so we should always be mindful and kind to each other.

Disasters can happen without warning. It's always good to be prepared for the worst!
American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has a lot of great information on being prepared for a disaster such as preparing for a disaster by:

• Making a disaster plan for your family and pets
• Preparing everything you need to execute that plan—such as putting together an evacuation kit for every member of your household (including all pets)
• Staying informed about local animal disaster plan
By being prepared with a disaster plan, you are helping advance your safety, the safety of your animals, and that of first responders.

It’s back to school time! While the excitement of a new school year takes hold, there may be some dangers lurking in your child's lunch box that may be toxic to pets.

Did you know that some common items in your child’s lunch box can be dangerous for your pets?

Keep an eye out for these toxic foods:
-Grapes and raisins
-Gum containing xylitol
-Peanut Butter (those containing xylitol)
-Chocolate
-Macadamia nuts
-Molded food
-Cold packs

Plus, chip clips and Ziploc bags can pose serious obstruction or suffocation risks. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, a pet can suffocate in less than 5 minutes.

Safety Tips:
-Tear any plastic bags before throwing them away.
-Store your trash can securely or use one with a tightly clamped lid.

Let’s keep our furry friends safe and healthy!

Did you know 6 minutes is all it takes for a dog to overheat in a hot vehicle and face lifelong or fatal consequences? ☀️🥵 Pets can still overheat even when the windows are down, or if the car is parked in a shaded area.

Our best advice is to not leave your dog in the car - take them with you or leave them at home with plenty of water and shade. They will happily greet you when you return! 😊

Recently, our Hospital Director, Amity, created a Kudos Board for the team as a place where team members could share their shoutouts for each other to help spread the good. Due to the overwhelming response from our team, we wanted to share some words from our Hospital Director and some images of the board with what our team had to say about each other.

“Working in an emergency setting can be very emotional and is almost always highly stressful due to the number of patients needing care, along with the critical needs of each patient. At AESC, teamwork is essential to our success, and we have an amazing, highly skilled, and talented team that does a tremendous job caring for patients and pet parents. At times, we get lost in our work and forget to acknowledge each other for our contributions and successes on any given day. As a leader in our hospital, it's not possible to be at work 24 hrs. a day, 7 days a week to see all the good our team is doing. This was a way for the team to be seen and acknowledged by their peers. I was blown away by all the positivity in these shoutouts! I love our team!!!!” - Amity

We strongly believe in creating a culture that supports each other. We understand that emergency medicine can be a tough career path. It takes very special individuals to come to work each day and pour their heart and soul into every case that comes through our doors.
