Animal Emergency & Specialty Center (AESC) of Poulsbo has provided trusted pet emergency veterinary care since 1993, serving Kitsap County and the surrounding areas. Few aspects of pet ownership are more frightening than an emergency when your family veterinarian’s office is closed. Animal Emergency is an emergency animal hospital that focuses on the treatment of trauma, critical care, and complic

ated medical problems. Animal Emergency and Trauma Center (AETC) was established in 1993 as a critical care animal hospital to care for your pet’s veterinary needs. In 2022, we grew to meet the needs of our community moving to a larger, state-of-the-art facility and adding specialty services to expand our offerings. Now, as Animal Emergency & Specialty Center (AESC), we continue work as a team with your family veterinarian, sharing information and common goals. A well trained, experienced, and caring team member can answer your questions and advise you regarding your pet’s problem. At AESC, our doctors and support staff dedicate themselves to emergency and critical care of companion animals. We focus on pet emergency and specialty care in and around Kitsap County including Bremerton, Silverdale, Port Orchard, Bainbridge Islands, Kingston, Belfair, Port Townsend, Gorst, Port Ludlow, Sequim, Shelton, Gig Harbor, Poulsbo, and Port Angeles. Sophie came in feeling scared after experiencing bleeding from her mouth. Thankfully, Laura, one of our talented LVTs, was able to bring her a little comfort in an unexpected way. Using a blanket, Laura crafted a cozy teddy bear companion for Sophie.

The results? Sophie was feeling much more comfortable with her new friend.

At Animal Emergency and Specialty Center, patient comfort and care are always our top priority.

Meet Luna, a brave 3-year-old Labrador Retriever and K9 officer with the Poulsbo Police Department! Recently, Luna was injured while running through some razor wire, resulting in lacerations to her muzzle and ear.

Luna's fellow officers rushed to her side and took her to the Animal Emergency & Specialty Center (AESC), where the amazing medical team has a long history of caring for our K9 heroes.

Our team treated Luna’s wounds and she on the road to recovery! Though she's healing well, she's so eager to get back to work that she's having a little trouble staying calm during her recovery.

A huge thank you to Luna and all the members of the Poulsbo Police Department who serve our community with courage and dedication every day. We appreciate your sacrifice and hard work!

Daylight Saving Time begins at 3:00 a.m. on Sunday! ⏰

As we spring ahead, our pets may be a little confused by their new meal times so keep that in mind as we all adjust to the new schedule.

We hope you and your pet are able to take advantage of the extra hour of daylight by spending some quality time outdoors.

Male cats can easily develop an obstruction of the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder and out of the body). Male cats (neutered or intact) are at greater risk for urethral obstruction than females because their urethra is longer and more narrow.

Obstructions are often the result of plugs of inflammatory material, mucus, crystals, or small stones (called calculi) that have formed in the kidneys and have passed down into the bladder. If a cat is suspected of suffering from this condition, they must receive immediate veterinary attention. Once the urethra becomes completely blocked, the kidneys are no longer able to remove toxins from the blood or maintain a balance of fluids and electrolytes in the body. Without treatment, these imbalances can lead to heart failure — often in less than 24 to 48 hours.

Symptoms can vary from mild to severe and may include:

-- Straining to urinate with little to no amount
-- Frequent and/or prolonged attempts to urinate
-- Crying out while urinating
-- Excessive licking of the ge***al area
-- Urinating outside the litter box
-- Blood in the urine
-- Increasingly distressed

If you suspect your cat has a urethral obstruction, immediately contact Animal Emergency and Specialty Center at (360) 697-7771. We are open 24/7 for Emergency services, and can provide overnight hospitalization and monitoring for those pets in need!

Meet Sadie, a sweet and loving Lab who recently became a proud mama!

Sadie came to us struggling with labor, and after careful monitoring and an attempt to induce, our team decided a C-section was the safest option. The surgery was a success, and she welcomed four beautiful puppies into the world! 🐾

Swipe to see Sadie, her adorable pups, and our amazing nursing team keeping a watchful eye on them post-op. 🐾

Meet Charlotte, LVT, VTS (ECC)

Meet Charlotte, our incredible Training Coordinator! After years in shelter and general practice, she transitioned to emergency and specialty medicine in 2010 with a thirst for knowledge—determined to know everything so she could help in any situation. Her dedication paid off when she earned her Veterinary Technician Specialty (VTS) in Emergency & Critical Care in 2015!

💡 Now, Charlotte’s passion is helping others grow in veterinary medicine. Whether it’s guiding a kennel assistant to become an LVT or mentoring a technician on the path to a VTS, she finds true fulfillment in shaping careers and ensuring pets receive expert care.

🐟 Outside of work, Charlotte is a devoted orange cat enthusiast (currently on #6, Marmalade 🧡), an avid metal concertgoer with her son, and loves witnessing the PNW’s salmon run each year.

Charlotte’s expertise is part of what makes our team exceptional. But what does it mean to be an LVT or a VTS?
🔹 LVTs (Licensed Veterinary Technicians) – Think of them like registered nurses in human medicine. They play a critical role in patient care.
🔹 VTSs (Veterinary Technician Specialists) – These technicians take their skills to the next level with years of advanced training, a rigorous specialty board exam, and expertise in areas like emergency & critical care, anesthesia, and more.

With highly trained professionals like Charlotte on our team, your pet is in expert hands.

Meet Dr. Rawnie Torres, one of our incredible Emergency veterinarians here at Animal Emergency & Specialty Center! When she’s not saving lives in the ER, she’s busy building a hobby farm with her family.

Dr. Torres’ farm is home to goats (including some adorable new kids!), chickens, geese, and even a surprise rooster. She also tried her hand at winemaking for the first time last summer—so in about a year, she’ll find out if her 12 bottles are a masterpiece… or a science experiment.

Her veterinary skills don’t stop at work—she managed to save a panleukopenia-positive kitten, who is now her daughter’s snuggle buddy. And she brings her homemade sourdough every week for our team to enjoy!

We’re so grateful to have Dr. Torres on our team—both for her amazing care in the ER and her delicious bread!
