Dear Valued Clients,
As many of you may have heard, there is an unidentified respiratory illness (β€œCanine Atypical Respiratory Disease”) affecting dogs that is becoming more common across the United States. At this time, we are not certain the exact cause of this illness, but we do know that it is more aggressive and contagious than typical respiratory infections in dogs, so we will continue to educate ourselves and implement protocol for the safety of our patients. We don’t want you to worry, but we do want to educate you and start taking precautions for your furry family members.
Symptoms of this illness can last many weeks/months and include:
Cough (wet or dry)
Nasal discharge
Eye discharge
Heavy breathing or difficulty breathing
Non-specific signs of illness: lethargy/sleepiness, decreased appetite
Fever (re**al temp >102.5)
While symptoms can be scary, we do want to make sure you are aware that the current risk of death in these patients is considered low with proper treatment. If you notice any of these symptoms or have any other concerns, please contact us so we can schedule an appointment or give you further recommendations.
During this time of uncertainty, we have some recommendations to help keep your pet safe. Please make sure your pet is up to date on all vaccines. If you are unsure about this, please call us. We recommend against exposing your dog to unknown dogs at dog parks, boarding facilities, day care, etc. Please keep your pet at home and away from all other dogs if they are experiencing any of these symptoms.
We want to assure you that your pet will be safe coming to the hospital, so we have implemented new, specific protocol in response to this illness. When we have a patient with suspected respiratory illness, we will require them to wait in the car to avoid contamination in the lobby. During appointments, our staff will be taking precautions to avoid contamination to other patients, including wearing gloves and gowns. After a patient with respiratory illness leaves an exam room, we will decontaminate the room with a highly-potent disinfectant. This disinfectant does require 10 minutes of contact time, so this may increase wait time as we assure your pet is safe. We also ask for you to not bring in additional pets to the appointment.

We appreciate your patience and understand during this time as we do everything we can to help you and your pet. We will continue to update you with information as it becomes available.
Sincerely,
Central Valley Animal Hospital

Cancer is a 6-letter word no pet owner wants to hear. As pets live longer, diseases that come along with aging, like cancer, can occur. National Pet Cancer Awareness Month was established to inform the public about prevention, what to look for, and how cancer is treated in pets.

Pets risk developing different types of cancer, just as humans do, and it is commonly seen in cats and dogs. Certain breeds of dogs have a higher risk of developing cancer at a young age, but most often, cancer is diagnosed in middle-aged and senior pets.

The arrival of September marks not only the end of the Dog Days of Summer, but also the beginning of a month devoted to the contentment of our cat companions: Happy Cat Month!🐱

πŸˆβ€β¬› Happy Cat Month was started to help spread awareness about the health and importance of companion cats. Has your cat been in to see us recently? One of the best ways to keep your cat happy is to make sure they're healthy, and what better way to do that then staying on top of their routine care? 🐈
