Came home from tagging to 9 new babies! Had a mama we didn't know was pregnant (must have took without any fall offs). 2 babies were still in the nest box. But the rest had fallen out of the cage (no baby saver on these) and were all over the barn. Once we figured who the mama was they were tucked into a nest box and are all warm.

New babies are always an exciting thing! But what happens when one is out of the nest box or you have a whole litter that is scattered? Since kits are born without hair they can quickly chill and die even in warm weather if they aren't born in the warm nest.

We've found the quickest and most effective way to warm kits is with warm to almost hot water. One way is to run them under running water at the sink. The running water also acts as compression on their heart. But you have to be careful not to get any in their mouths so they don't aspirated and since they are wet they can quickly chill again until they dry. Another drawback is it is hard to warm up more than one or two at a time. So we've been using another method lately and it's been working like a charm.

Fill up a sink with very warm, almost hot water. Place the kits in a zip lock baggie (we like the gallon size ones) and simply float the bag with the kits inside in the water. The water envelopes them and warms them quickly. Just be careful to not get any water in the bag and don't leave it unattended. We saved a whole litter a few days ago and warmed another but with this method today. After about 10 minutes the kits that we barely moving were wiggly and warm. This is the best way we've found because you can warm them all at once too. 7 kits warmed up in 10 minutes and they are all healthy today!

Here's a Pic of the one we warmed up today using that method. He didn't make it but I think it was because he fell from a cage and had other injuries, not because he was cold. His mom went on to have 9 other babies a little while later that are all thriving right now!

Forgive our abscence! It's been a dry spell with rabbits. But we are happy to announce two litters in the nest boxes! A litter of REWs that may be able to be used as roasters for Fair and a litter of 10 healthy chunks for first time mom Frenchie. Those will be butcher rabbits. And we have 3 does bred in hopes to have meat pens available for Fair. Two are already bred, hoping to get 2 more bred. And enjoy a little glimpse of spring around here.⚘ī¸đŸĒģđŸŒģ

Heart Mountain Rabbitry would like to give back this holiday season!

4H has been such a huge influence in my life I would like to help someone get their start in rabbits. I will be doing a give-a-way for one of these pedigreed Mini Rex does. Winner will have their choice. All are from my show stock and will make great 4H Showmanship and show rabbits, and even brood does if someone wanted to start their own herd.

To enter, please message the rabbitry page with your name, age, and 4H club. A winner will be drawn December 8th. Rabbit must be picked up within a week of winning, unless other arrangements are made.

Just realized I never updated from Fair!

Both my sister and I did great this year! Each of us got multiple banners for Champion and Reserve placings.

I loved showing Chickens for the first time and I walked away with Reserve Intermediate Showmanship. I got 3rd out of 30 for Intermediate rabbit Showmanship (competition was super tough for that and I am super proud of my 3rd place!) I also got Reserve Intermediate Dairy Goat Showmanship and did the best I've ever done with my Market Goat. I didn't place but I got 4th and 2nd in my lightweight drives and in the one show was back for the final drive for overall lightweight champion. Maybe the best thing being was invited for the first time to participate in Small Animal Round Robin Showmanship and I won!

I am rethinking overall goals for my business and rabbitry and may have some proven stock up for sale in the near future so watch my page for details! Exciting things for the future!

I hate it when we miss a breeding date. Never saw Jalapeno covered and didn't think she was bred. Had these sweet kits born on the wire today. 9 of them! She pulled tons of fur and did the best she could without a nest box. Shes such a good mama. Thankfully I was cleaning cages today and heard them squeaking. Lost two but the other 7 are doing well!

9 babies born today from Steele. This was her first litter in a while and she did not dissapoint! We found one on the wire this morning but it was fine. Then my sister found one on the floor all the way across the barn this afternoon. Both were returned to mom and are doing fine!
