A unique program in Southern California pairs sea lions who've been hurt in the wild and veterans dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder. "I saw a lot of me in Zion," one participant said of a sea lion found tangled up in a fishing net. "Zion thought he was doing just fine, he was gonna figure it all out on his own, right? And it's not until someone helps you that you realize how badly you needed the help."

A new analysis of studies dating back to the 1950s has shown that dog ownership is associated with a 24% risk reduction for all-cause mortality as compared to non-ownership. Notably, in individuals with prior coronary events, living in a home with a dog was associated with an even more pronounced reduction of risk.

Dog owners are 24% less likely to die for any reason, but the life-prolonging benefits are even higher for anyone with cardiovascular disease, according to two new studies.

In partnership with the Animal Protective League, the state of Indiana established a program that places shelter cats in a prison prior to adopting them out. Inmates care for and help socialize the animals to prepare them for new families, and in return, the cats teach them compassion and responsibility.

During a recent study, researchers found evidence supporting the idea that birds' emotional reactions may be contagious – meaning that when one is suffering, others may feel distress as well. However, they were unable to create the same effect for positive emotional reactions.

While most Americans remember the heroic efforts of the human rescuers who rushed to save lives as the World Trade Center collapsed on Sept. 11, 2001, the stories of hundreds of dogs who served alongside their two-legged counterparts aren't as well known. Here are profiles of some of those incredible dogs.

From rescue dogs finding survivors, to people being saved in the burning building by guide dogs, thousands had their lives changed by a man’s best friend.

Our human ability to learn language slows down as we get older, but scientists are not sure how or why this happens. An unexpected way to understand this learning process might come from studying how birds learn to sing.

Could mating preferences, like females preferring males who sing complex songs, affect the evolution of learning? Insights from birds could have clues for how people learn throughout their lives.

Goats can not only recognize slight emotional changes in other goats’ calls, but they can also respond both behaviorally and physiologically, according to findings from a new study. Researchers say that understanding these animals' emotions could help farmers improve their quality of life.

When goats hear other goats making positive calls, their emotions shift, too.

San Francisco’s Muttville Senior Dog Rescue hosts a regular "Cuddle Club," which gives senior people the chance to spend time petting and walking senior dogs. This and other innovative programs have allowed the shelter to rescue and re-home more than 6,600 older dogs since its inception in 2007.

Muttville Senior Dog Rescue's innovative program is a win-win solution for people and animals who need companionship, exercise and affection.

The FDA recently launched an initiative to cut back on the use of dogs in bioequivalence trials. "Our goal is to do one single study involving a small number of dogs where the dogs will only be subject to minimally invasive blood sampling, and adopted as pets at the completion of the short trial -- to eliminate the need for the use of dogs in certain types of future studies, some where they might have been euthanized," FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb explained.

As part of a new effort to cut the use of dogs in drug trials, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday launched an initiative to keep canines out of studies for certain veterinary medicines.
