Our Arctic foxes, Hanna and Marco, and their white winter coats. ❄️🤍

As one of only a few zoos accredited by The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) with Arctic foxes, it’s incredibly special for our Zoo to have this species. It should come as no surprise that Arctic foxes can be found throughout the Arctic, extending across Eurasia, North America, Greenland, and Iceland.

Here at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, our Arctic foxes call Polar Frontier in the North America region home. To learn more about this incredible and adaptive species, read our blog at https://www.columbuszoo.org/blog/discover-arctic-fox-columbus-zoo-and-aquarium

When you visit the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, you see firsthand how incredible Asian elephants are. But did you know they’re endangered in the wild? That’s why we’re doing more than just talking about conservation—we’re taking action!

Last year, we teamed up with Wildlife Trust of India and the IUCN Species Survival Commission to launch the Center for Species Survival: Asian Elephant, a groundbreaking initiative that brings together experts from around the world to find real solutions to protect these gentle giants. Whether it’s reducing human-wildlife conflict, preserving habitats, or advancing research, we’re committed to making a difference where it matters most.

As part of Reverse the Red, a global effort to turn the tide for endangered species, we’re proud to move from ideas to action. And every visit, membership, and donation supports conservation efforts like this—helping us protect elephants here at the Zoo and in the wild.

Learn more about how we’re working to secure a future for Asian elephants: https://www.columbuszoo.org/center-species-survival-asian-elephant

Thank you for being part of this important mission. Together, we can Reverse the Red!

Did you know that the Columbus Zoo’s work to save wildlife goes beyond the Zoo and includes helping to support wildlife in Columbus parks?

Meet Stoyan, our Horticulture Manager here at the Columbus Zoo, who is a vital part of making this happen. Through working with Preservation Parks of Delaware County at Emily Traphagen Park, Stoyan helps bring natural plant species, such as the black willow, to the park, which will also benefit our animals here at the Columbus Zoo in the future.

Black willow is just one of many species that Stoyan cares for in our greenhouse. Through his work, we’re helping support wildlife both at the Columbus Zoo and in the Columbus community. 💚🌱

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is proud to partner with Columbus City Schools to provide hands-on learning experiences for Fort Hayes Career Center students!

Generously funded by Battelle, this initiative will allow students to gain real-world experience in skilled trades by working alongside the Zoo’s expert carpentry, electrical, HVAC, and landscaping teams. This unique opportunity highlights how a wide range of careers—including those behind the scenes—play a vital role in supporting wildlife conservation.

Through this initiative, students will develop valuable skills in a professional setting, exploring career pathways that keep places like the Columbus Zoo running smoothly. This partnership is part of our continued commitment to investing in students, education, and workforce development across Central Ohio.

The Columbus Zoo also collaborates with Columbus City Schools through programs like the Career-Technical Education Columbus Teaching Academy at Columbus Downtown High School, where students interested in education careers work with our team to develop interactive learning experiences. We are honored to help shape the next generation of skilled professionals while inspiring a deeper connection to conservation.

👏 A big thank you to our partners at Columbus City Schools for making this opportunity possible!

‘Tis the season of love… including brotherly love! 💙

Asian small-clawed otters, Yin and Yang joined our Columbus Zoo family when they were only one month old and have been stealing hearts ever since. Their names were chosen because they would always sleep head to tail, like the Yin Yang symbol, but their personalities are quite the opposite of their names. While Yin is the fiery and assertive one, while Yang is more laid-back and easygoing, making the perfect balance. ☯️

Whether you’ve seen them in Wild Encounters, school programs, on behind-the-scenes tours, or in their current habitat in Australia and the Islands, these boys are always a guest favorite along with the other otters in their romp, Willie, Marley, and Dash.

The two can commonly be told apart, because Yang has a cute little pink nose which makes him unique. With Valentine’s Day and Yin and Yang’s 12th birthday just a day apart, there’s otterly so much love to celebrate this month!

As part of our commitment to animal health and safety, we’ve taken precautionary measures to protect our bird residents at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and The Wilds. Due to the recent detection of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in Ohio, we have temporarily moved some of our most susceptible birds—like flamingos, swans, pelicans, and cranes—indoors to their cozy winter spaces.

Avian influenza is a virus naturally found in birds, and while some wild birds can carry it without harm, others—including some of our beloved species—can become seriously ill. While we know you'll miss seeing them, rest assured that our Animal Care and Conservation Medicine teams are providing them with exceptional care, including ongoing monitoring and health screenings. As an added precaution, we’ve also paused feeding raw poultry to any of the animals.

We appreciate your support as we take every step to ensure the wellbeing of the incredible birds in our care. Their health is our priority, and we’ll continue to adapt as needed. Thank you for being part of our commitment to wildlife conservation!

Construction is progressing for our incredible North America region redevelopment project! To keep things moving along, we'll be closing the main public pathway in the North America region and providing an alternate route for guests. This closure will be instrumental to the construction of North America Trek, as it will allow us to demo the existing path, install the new walkway, install fencing, along with a host of other items that will be installed along the new pathway.

To visit these regions:
North America
Polar Frontier
Heart of Africa

Guests will begin their journey next to Village Coffee in Entry Village. A stroll down our shuttle pathway will lead you to the intersection of all three regions! Signage will be available at the Zoo, and the mobile app will also be updated. There will also be benches along the path to provide guests an opportunity to take a break during their walk.

We expect this detour to be in place through May, but will keep you updated on our website and on social media. Thank you for your understanding!

Happy Lunar New Year and welcome into the Year of the Snake, more specifically, the wood snake! 🐍

According to traditional Chinese culture, the Year of the Snake in 2025 promises a time of transformation, wisdom, and calculated progress. Represented by the Wood element, this year’s energy encourages growth, adaptability, and a focus on long-term goals.

As we enter the Year of the Snake here at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, we remain focused on our own long-term goals and calculated progress, especially in animal conservation. In our own local conservation initiatives, we remain committed to the conservation of the plains garter snake.

While this snake used to be very common throughout the state, it has now become isolated to one state-managed area in Wyandot County almost solely due to human encroachment here in Ohio. This species was once abundant, but now their habitat has been wiped away to make room for suburban development and farming, with a 94% decline between the 1970s to 1999. However, for close to two decades, we've been caring for these small snakes and have released over 400 of them back into that protected area.

Through our continued support of the Plains Garter Snake Recovery Project in Ohio and the opening of our new Ohio Center for Wildlife Conservation (OCWC), we will continue elevating the importance of this native Ohio species and all the work that is left to be done for them. In the Year of the Snake, a year that embraces change, we look forward to the positive change we can continue to make.

💕🐧 Celebrate love (or a little revenge) with a wild twist this Valentine’s Day! 🐻💔

Whether you’re smitten or scorned, we’ve got two unique ways to make your Valentine’s Day unforgettable—and help support wildlife care at the same time!

OPTION 1: Penguin-tines! 🐧💕 For the romantics out there, gift your loved one a felt heart that our penguins will use to build their nests! You’ll also get a personalized video from our care team featuring your loved one’s name written on the heart—making this a one-of-a-kind Valentine’s surprise. 💌 ($65)

OPTION 2: Name a superworm that will be fed to a SLOTH BEAR! 🐛💔 For those not feeling the love this year (hello, exes!), name a superworm in honor of that person. Watch as one of our sloth bears devours it in a satisfying—and symbolic—moment. All purchasers receive a fun video of the action! 🐻 ($15)

No matter which side of the Valentine’s coin you’re on, your purchase directly supports the amazing care and conservation efforts for the animals at the Columbus Zoo. But hurry—these campaigns close on February 9!

Make your pick today and let love (or a little payback) go wild: https://www.columbuszoo.org/personalized-video-messages
