ogs and their owners love a happy and calm life. I originally moved from Heidelberg, Germany in 1998 with my veteran husband to the United States, and I was determined to pursue the American Dream. I have lived and worked as a dog trainer in Germany, California and North Carolina and with my Veteran husband I settled down in his hometown Powell, Tennessee. Dogs have always been a lifelong passion of mine, and being driven by that passion...I pursued an education at the Canine Behavioral College, and graduated with honors in 2008. Updated my portfolio to include PRO dog trainer and Geek certification in 2021/2022. Some of my specialties include: Dog Behavior, basic & advanced dog group or private classes, In home services, concept training, Workshops, Seminars, Events & games based training. I also teach all American Kennel Club (AKC) classes and perform all their tests. Winter can pose some unique challenges for dogs, so it's important to take a few precautions to keep them safe and comfortable. Here are some key things to watch out for:

1. **Cold Weather Exposure**:
- **Hypothermia and Frostbite**: Some breeds are more susceptible to the cold than others. Short-haired or small dogs, or those with less fat, are at greater risk. Avoid prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures, and consider dog coats or sweaters for extra warmth.
- **Paw Protection**: Ice and salt can be rough on your dog's paws. Salt and other de-icers can cause irritation or burns on their paws, so rinse them off after walks. Booties can also help protect their paws from cold and salt.

2. **Slippery Surfaces**:
Ice and snow can create dangerous walking conditions. Watch for frozen patches that might cause slips, falls, or injuries. If your dog struggles with slippery conditions, consider using paw wax or traction booties.

3. **Toxic Chemicals**:
Anti-freeze is highly toxic to dogs if ingested. Be mindful of spills or puddles, and clean them up quickly. Also, some snow and ice melt products can be harmful if dogs lick them off their paws, so try to use pet-safe alternatives.

4. **Reduced Activity**:
Shorter daylight hours and colder temperatures can lead to less outdoor exercise. Ensure your dog still gets enough mental and physical stimulation. Indoor games, puzzles, or using the stairs can help.

5. **Overexertion**:
While it's tempting to let your dog play in the snow, make sure they don't overdo it. Excessive running or playing in cold weather can lead to fatigue or muscle strain. Always monitor their energy levels.

6. **Shelter**:
If your dog spends time outside, make sure they have access to a warm, dry shelter. This is crucial in freezing temperatures, as prolonged exposure to the elements can lead to serious health issues.

7. **Dietary Adjustments**:
Some dogs burn more calories in winter to stay warm, so consider adjusting their food portions if necessary. Always ensure fresh, clean water is available, as hydration is still important even in winter months.

By staying mindful of these factors, you can help your dog stay safe, healthy, and happy through the colder months.

The quote "Der Hund bleibt dir im Sturme treu, der Mensch nicht mal im Winde" is indeed from Schiller, but it is not part of a full poem dedicated to dogs. However, Schiller’s writings often touched on themes of loyalty and human nature, which is reflected in this line.

Here is an English translation of the quote:

"The dog remains loyal to you in the storm; the human not even in the wind."

Schiller's works, like many of the great Romantic poets, explored the contrast between human qualities and the purity of animals, and this quote highlights the unshakable loyalty of dogs in comparison to the fickleness of human relationships. If you're looking for a poem that encapsulates this sentiment, Schiller’s famous works like "Ode to Joy" don't focus specifically on animals, but this line still beautifully reflects his philosophical view on loyalty.

New Year’s Tips

If you're thinking about how to care for your dog during the New Year celebrations, here are a few tips to help keep your furry friend safe and comfortable:

Keep them away from fireworks: The loud noises can be very stressful for dogs. If possible, keep your dog indoors in a quiet room, away from windows where they might see flashes. Consider using calming music or white noise to help drown out the sounds.
Provide a safe space: Create a comfortable, cozy environment with their favorite toys, blanket, or bed. Dogs often feel more secure when they have a familiar space to retreat to.
Exercise before the festivities: Take your dog for a walk or engage in play earlier in the day to burn off some energy before the evening’s events begin.
Stay calm: Dogs are sensitive to their owner's emotions. If you're stressed or excited, your dog might pick up on it. Try to remain calm and reassuring.
Avoid human foods: During parties, it’s tempting to share food, but many foods, like chocolate, grapes, and alcohol, can be harmful to dogs. Keep all human treats out of reach.
Consider calming aids: If your dog is particularly anxious, talk to your vet about calming products, such as pheromone diffusers or calming treats, that can help.
ID and microchip check: Make sure your dog has an up-to-date ID tag, and if they’re microchipped, ensure the details are current in case they manage to escape during the chaos.
By preparing in advance, you can help your dog feel safe and less stressed during New Year’s celebrations!
