What are your favorite dog idioms and sayings?
Dog sayings/idioms have been around for a long time. For instance "hair of the dog" derived from the 1800's when it was thought that a bite from a rabid dog could be healed by placing their hair on the wound. It was assumed that what hurt them could help them. That doesn't sound effective to me...but today it is commonly used when someone has a hangover to have more of what hurt them. That doesn't sound effective to me either. LOL
And if you want to see some additional ones, this post by Holiday Barn Pet Resorts https://holidaybarn.com/blog/dog-idioms-history-and-meanings/.

For those who think making the decision to euthanize gets easier the more you've experienced it, you're wrong. I'm not sure how much longer I can do this. Deciding to euthanize any pet is one of the most painful decisions anyone can make.

Eve. Our incredibly sweet, extremely docile, precious little Eve. In the two years we've had her, I've never once heard her growl or even bark for that matter. To hear the cry of frustration (Sundowners times 10) that is a dog with end stage dementia will have anyone in tears. As most of you know, she also had mobility issues and could no longer walk or stand. She had forgotten how to swallow, and needless to say eating became extremely frustrating for her. Her tail never wagged anymore and I knew what I needed to do for her. Admittedly, and like I've been known to do in the past, I probably waited a little too long in hopes that my prayers were heard and that Eve would improve. Tom and Lisa, thank you for loving her, caring about her, and helping with her medical expenses. Cora, you're the best. Eve loved her weekends away with you, and all the one on one time you spent with her.

We stopped by a fast food joint and picked up a double cheesburger just for her. I spread a blanket under a tree, enjoying the perfect weather. She continued to drop the bites of cheeseburger I offered to her. BUT ... when I gave her a Hershey's kiss, she lit up and her little jaw clenched down on it like I've never seen before. Chocolate was oozing from the very corners of her mouth, down her tiny face and for a very brief moment before the injection, I saw the sparkle back in her eyes. She had forgotten the pain and was only focused on the delicious taste in her mouth. Run free, my sweet girl. You were loved beyond measure.

It's Foster Friday! Today we showcase two former Miko's Sanctuary Foster Dogs that have since been adopted into the most loving and wonderful homes.

Pictured are Jack who is sharing a bed with his (new) sister Olive. Jack's adopter had some additional questions before adopting and the Foster was able to answer these in detail. And, Monkey who is out on one of her many daily adventure walks. Monkey's adopter was looking for a good walking and hiking buddy and Monkey fit that perfectly.

Fostering a dog is important because it allows for a deeper dive into the personality of the dog for the potential adopter. It provides insight into a dog's behavior, their likes and dislikes. It gives a dog an opportunity to experience a home setting, practice routines, explore new surroundings. It can be a means to decompress and heal or to become more adaptive and social. Fostering is sometimes how we learn that a dog has anxiety when alone or dislikes cats or loves children. All of this is beneficial to finding the best possible match with an adopter.

Fostering with all its benefits, also has a cost as Miko's Sanctuary absorbs all costs for the foster until adopted. Consider supporting our mission by donating today. A small recurring donation of $15, $25 or $50 a month helps us plan and budget for future intake and care of our current dogs.

This beautiful gal is Memaw, a sweet little old lady who just wants to rest after years of breeding. She is 15 - 17 years old. I promised her she could rest here and would be comfortable, spoiled, and pampered until the end of her days. We give her daily supplements and pain relief meds to help her with the stiffness of arthritis. She loves everyone and while being held will place her head against your neck for comfort.

ADOPTED

Tigger is a lovely 7 month old little pup, 50% poodle and 50% French Bulldog. He loves fetch with a ball, eating sticks and possibly mealtime is his favorite part of the day. He’s motivated which makes him easy to train. Tig enjoys the company of dogs and humans. He loves to run, jump and play and would be a superb best friend to someone with as much energy as he has. Tig is housebroken and crate and leash trained and is a good boy who comes when called. Will work for treats! Application on our website.

"Hi, I'm Peanut. I came to the Sanctuary about 2 or 3 years ago. I was a chubby fella then, though you wouldn't know it to look at me today. That's because Bobbie takes good care of me and the rest of the pack. When is started losing too much weight she fixed that too. And, I learned to trust more while I've been here. I 💜 !"

Meet Blake. He came from a shelter in NC and has been diagnosed with congestive heart failure recently. Look at those eyes. I just melt with the bi-colored eyes and think they're adorable. As an FYI: it is a condition called heterochromia. There's a good (and short) article on about the condition. As always, to support our mission for dogs like Blake who deserve to live a life in the sunshine until they cross the rainbow bridge, you can do so on our website and click on the DONATE button.

We could all learn from this little girl. I can only imagine how painful her arthritis is, but she keeps trying. One of our special followers has so generously offered to pay for an expensive injection to help ease the pain! Eve now has an appointment next week. Until then, enjoy a bit more of our precious girl as she slowly learns how to use her wheelchair.

"I adopted Penelope the Beagle/Basset from you back in Aug 2024. I wanted you to know she is doing very well here. She has a fenced in yard with doggy doors. She is a terror with the cat's litter box so I had to make some adjustments there. She is a nut when it's dinner or snack time. She is a cuddle bug and has taken my spot on the couch as hers. She is very popular when we go out. Since I got her she has only barked twice. She has had a few vet visits for itching, and general check up and grooming. I had her chipped because she is a escape artist. She showed me the ways out of my fathers yard twice so I spent a weekend there refencing. She loves the snow but not when it's real cold. Thank you for saving her so that I could find her. She is everything to me now and I couldn't imagine life without her." From one of our adopters.

Eve has been struggling with mobility, but Cora and I are not about to give up. Several times a day, we encourage her to walk to prevent extreme stiffness in her rear legs. She did great tonight!

Sweet Melba needed a family that would help her on her weight loss journey. Andy was adopted from us a while back. His owner decided he needed a friend, and Melba joined them last month. Just look at this video. I love these two! Andy and Melba definitely have one thing in common - they both love their mama.

Today is day and we're sending out HUGS to all our adopters and adoptees. Here's an update from one of our adopters and pics of her pups. Send us your hugs and updates too!

"It's been almost a year since I adopted Amelia and Bambi. Amelia is our hype man and the most vocal about everyone coming home. She gets the zoomies and races up and down the couch. However, she is the leeriest of strangers and takes a moment to warm up. She is quite silly and loves to play with our original pet Lucy Lou or toys. Amelia is a big help with loading the dish washer and we have to be careful and not leave a plate unattended when she's around. Unfortunately, she and Bambi don't get along very well but it's a Bambi issue and we've learned to watch for warnings. "

Bambi took a good 6 months to really let her guard down and be a dog. Her goal is to be the dog who gets the most attention. She is incredibly sweet with people, children especially and just wants to be loved by all. She is pretty much always "glued" to whomever is home and we are okay with that. She does not like to be told no and will pout like a toddler when she's corrected. It's quite pathetic, LOL.

We are so glad they are in our lives and really appreciate the mission of Miko's Sanctuary. Thank you so much for all you do!"

Russell is a super cuddly senior that's still waiting for you to take him home. He's 10 years young, neutered and up to date on his vaccines. Just look into those big brown eyes. Adorable!

It is with sadness that I pass along the news about Sarah. Her story began like so many others dumped at shelters - she was old, had arthritis, and just no longer wanted. So many people at the shelter believed she was worth saving and pulled together to have her flown here to Virginia. She was quickly adopted by a loving family who spoiled her to the point that she undoubtedly forgot about the time she wasn't loved. Please keep the Horvath family in your thoughts as they mourn the loss of our beloved little Sarah.
