We love senior dogs. It's more than just a hashtag. Miko's Sanctuary we give comfort and hope to those pups who have been abandoned, surrendered, and tossed out. We've seen dogs like Pepe who came to us with severe heart issues and not expected to live but months. He's been with us for a couple of years now.

Nightly dose of Norma. Her hair loss has become worse, and not better. She is on thyroid medication and an Omega 3 supplement. I feed her Fresh Pet Chicken & vegetables and I add a spoonful of coconut oil. I'm wondering if I should change her diet. Any suggestion?

This morning I made the very difficult decision to say goodbye to Shamas. He was 19. His bloodwork showed that he suddenly and unexpectedly went into kidney failure, and his little pancreas was angry. He didn't even have enough strength to stand anymore. Pancreatitis is excruciatingly painful, and I didn't want him to suffer.

Most of you know that Sophie and Shamas were bonded. I had her brought her to the clinic to let her spend time with him. She let me know the minute she knew he was dying. This picture was taken shortly before the final goodbye. I don't know what was more difficult - saying goodbye to Shamas, or watching Sophie's heart completely shatter as her world fell apart. To those who think an animal doesn't have deep feelings, you certainly have never experienced what I have. Sophie was filled with so much sadness. Her sounds of despair will stay with me forever. What I do know is that I will spend the next few days focusing on Sophie while she grieves the loss of her precious Shamas. Please pray for her.

Rescuing senior dogs is fulfilling and expensive. Many of our pups come to us needing heart meds, and all need preventatives. Some of the most common medications we are prescribed are furosemide, enalapril and pimobendan for heart issues. Occasionally, we even need a compounded prescription.
