Winnie's version of "Paws Up"
:) 🐔
Let's talk about play styles and doggie communication for a minute.
This is one of my great passions; watching dogs be dogs. Observing how they communicate with each other, respond to stimuli, interpret and process information. I find it all very fascinating.
I think many people associate "play" with dogs just running around, and while that's certainly one style, there are many more. Often there are play styles typical to particular breeds. Greyhounds run. Dobies "box" and are very handy. Pitties hip check. And Shepherds....well shepherds have a favorite game we call "bitey face". And this style is probably the most confused and misinterpreted. It can be loud, with flashing teeth and big body movements...if you were to look at a still photo, you might have concerns - but watch a video and you'll see how ridiculous they really are.
Ledg and Buck are besties, and they demonstrate proper wrestling style well. If they were actually trying to fight theyd...be terrible at it!
Forget tail placement, eyes, ears and all the things you may have heard about reading dogs for a moment, and just watch. There is absolutely nothing intense. Their bodies are loose and wiggly. They often put themselves off balance. Their movements are exaggerated. They easily engage and disengage. They take frequent breaks. If either dog was uncomfortable, they have opportunity to move away. They alternate roles. You can see them approach, ask to play and engage. There is a lot of communication back and forth for a very healthy, happy play session!

This video makes me happy...
Everyone likes to watch videos of dogs playing, and wrestling and tearing around the yard. Sure, it's lots of fun - and there is nothing wrong with fun... however - many of these dogs have no idea how to settle and be calm. It's an aspect of socialization that I think is too often missed. When we socialize- we want our dog to see *all* the things, meet *all* the people, and play with *all* the dogs. It's just as important, if not moreso, to also teach our dogs how to ignore these things! To be able to maintain calmness and composure even when exposed to exciting things.
This particular group played on and off all morning. Later, when one dog laid down, they (almost) all followed suit. There was a nice breeze, and they were content to just 'be'.
Watching the birds overhead, smelling all the smells and enjoying each other's company. And this, my friends, makes me happy.
(And no, I did not put them in a down stay. This is entirely their choice. I had nothing to do with it.)
Concept Canine; Building Blocks of Success
Hey Everyone! September's calendar is up on the website - check it out and share it 'round!
https://reachk9.com/events/month/2022-09/
There a bunch of new stuff happening. You may have seen posts lately about our friends at rally. If you're interested in learning more about it - and why we LOVE Rally-Obedience, we're running a special series for September to introduce everyone to the sport. The first week is without dogs, so we can cover all the basics (reading the signs, etiquette, etc..), then we bring on the dogs and work through stationary positions, moving exercises, and finally putting it all together. This crash course leads into our Rally workshops with WCRL Judge Taylor Brookes in October to further hone your skills. In November, come compete at our EPIC Rock & Roll themed trial in Louisa!
We have also launched a BRAND NEW program; Concept Canine - Building Blocks for Success. Sit, Down, Stay, Heel - these skills only get you so far in the real world. Learn how to train concepts; calmness, focus, proximity, impulse control, etc -and have the best dog in town! You can either attend just the new group classes or go all in and get the whole program!
Learn more here: https://reachk9.com/concept-canine-building-blocks-for-success/
We also added a new class 'Just Sit!'. We love our concepts, and sport training -but sometimes all you want is the basics. If you just want to learn Sit, Down, Stay, Place, and Loose Leash Walking.... this class has you covered!
It's all on the class calendar. Just click on the class name for more information. As always - if you have any questions - give us a shout!
We are launching a brand-new program starting Sept 1. Stay tuned for more information! If you've ever wanted to understand your dog and work together (not rely on tools and outdated methods) this program is for you!
Trick dog workshop with Ariel today! Featuring Kelly and Arson!
Recalls on the snowy trails :)
It takes approximately 9000 successful recalls to get it "bomb-proof"... and if you get to 7241, and call your dog and get the furry finger - it goes back to zero! Set your dog up for succes; control the environment, use a long line, and practice, practice, practice!
((And, for the record, there is no e-collar, or corrective device. Never has been. In fact, Hodge is naked. We have a good recall, because we worked together and *taught* a good recall!!))
🐾🎵🎶 On the twelfth day of Christmas, my best friend gave to me - 12 perfect steps 🐾🎵🎶
Everyone's "perfect steps" will be different...maybe its 12 perfect steps in heel, maybe is 12 perfect steps on a loose leash...maybe its walking by a distraction with no reaction. Maybe it's just a sniff walk with time together. Whatever it is - show us greatness for 12 steps! :)
🐾🎵🎶 On the ninth day of Christmas, my best friend gave to me - Nine shotgun cues 🎶🐾🎵
Shotgun cues are when we do cues in rapid succession. We always mark the correct behavior, but the reward is held till the end. We make it super fun and exciting to build speed and enthusiasm in the execution of the cue. You can repeat cues, just don't do 9 sits in a row! Some suggestions- touch, sit, down, stand, go around, paws up, finish, turn...be creative! Don't overthink it.
🎵🎶🐾 On the seventh day of Christmas, my best friend gave to me - a seven second butt scritch! 🐾🎶🎵
(Or ear scritches, or gentle pats, or loving strokes - whatever your dog prefers! Not sure if they like it? When you stop, do they ask for more or walk away?)
🎶🐾🎵 On the fifth day of Christmas, my dog and I made plans - with 5 Training Goals 🎶🐾🎵
Do this however you want! Your dog can be chewing a bone on his bed. Sitting in your lap, holding a stay...I wanted to see if hodge would stay engaged w me through different positions, even when my back was turned and I wasn't engaged w him. Also remember, each new day backtracks through the previous days, so you can always change or refine your goals!
Added challenge - can you chain all 4 days together? Hodge wants bonus points for enthusiasm!
🐾🎵🎶 On the third day of Christmas, my best friend gave to me - a 3 second greeting 🎶🎵🐾
(It could be with a person, a dog, a cat, another critter, even a stuffed toy...practice your disengagement!)
