We have so many great dogs here at the shelter, and while they all deserve a home we are all hoping that Jordan gets one soon! He is such a sweet boy, and we know once he is in a home that can show him love, and consistency his personality will really start to shine. Jordan may be a large hound dog, but he is a cuddler, and loves to sit on the couch with the volunteers. He enjoys going for walks, spending time outside in the sun, and exploring. He still isn't too sure what to do with dog toys, but he loves to get treats!

How much are you feeding your dog?? If your answer is 'one scoop a day!' have you measured how much the scoop actually is in a measured cup?
One of our clients was using a scoop and was vigilantly filling the scoop to the designated line where one cup was supposed to be. Turns out that scoop measured to 1 and 2/3 cup! Thats over 50% of what the animal should be getting!
We have complimentary measuring cups here in the clinic that you can take home to accurately measure your pet's food! Don't forget to ask us about how much they should be getting to be at a healthy weight, we can calculate calories and tell you exactly how much to be feeding, just give us the name of the food you feed!
May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month!
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection spread by deer ticks or black legged ticks, which as you can see can be very tiny and unnoticeable! This tick was found on an eyelid of a surgery patient and was about to be passed off as a small and harmless growth. Good thing we were curious enough to touch it and found it had legs!
There are many ways that you can help prevent your animal from getting this disease as well as the other two tick borne diseases, Anaplasmosis and Ehrlichiosis. Among them are consistent month to month flea and tick prevention year round, such as Simparica Trio or Bravecto. We also have a vaccine for Lyme disease that your pet can get annually.
A yearly 4DX test is recommended to make sure your dog is free and clear of any tick borne diseases. This is an in-clinic test that uses three drops of blood and takes about 8 minutes to tell us if your dog is positive.

There seems to be some bad thoughts around these very helpful tools when it comes to certain anxiety related behaviors. Axel is showing off just some of the supplements and medications that can be used to help your pup handle situations! Axel himself has issues with separation anxiety and is currently on Purina Calming Care and he says that he can feel the difference in how he acts when his family is away from home!

We as humans sometimes need mental health help. Dogs (and cats!) are no different. Ask us if you think your animal has anxious behaviors and we can help get them on a road to being the best pet they can be!
You may be asking if there is a way to prevent anxiousness in dogs. The answer is complicated. Fear is a basic instinct that helps animals survive. There is no way to prevent that component of life. But there are some things that you can do to help the dogs cope with that anxiousness.
Training is a very good way to limit anxiety. A confident dog is a happy dog! Dogs with proper obedience and socialization training are often more balanced and well-adjusted, causing them to adapt to new situations and people more easily and therefore, be less anxious.
Nutrition and exercise, both physical and mental, are key elements to keeping anxiety low. If these needs are not met then many dogs can have problems.
A very easy thing to do is situation avoidance. If your dog doesnt like new people, don't introduce them to new people. They don't like care rides? Limit car rides to only when needed. But just remember that things do happen that are unavoidable so it is best to try to cope with the stressors.
Fear of loud noises is the most common reason for anxiety in dogs, but these three things below can be helpful in most cases of anxiety symptoms.
Create a safe space for your pup. A crate that is padded and dark and as quiet as possible is a good start. If a crate isn't an option, try a closet or bathroom or a corner of a dark room. Make it a good place to go if they are afraid. This space is where they should want to go, or where you can place them, when stressors happen.
In this space, try distracting elements. Put peanut butter or squeeze cheese in a kong and freeze until the pup needs to be in that safe space. Give their mind something else to focus on! Dental chew treats are also a good option!
One of the best things to do is to be there for your dog!! It's okay to cuddle them and treat them! They will feed off of your emotions and anxiety. Keep as calm as possible for them to know you aren't worried.

In the last 7 days our clinic has seen 5 cases of anaplasmosis and lyme disease by testing with our 4DX test (a blood test that checks for heartworm disease, and three tick borne diseases which are anaplasmosis, lyme, and ehrlichia). Ticks are out and in full force! These diseases are easily prevented, but often very painful once showing signs. When you think of exercising your dog (or cat!) What is the first thing that comes to mind? Physical work right? Walking, running, swimming.
