There's a growing concern about Avian Influenza A H5N1 infecting domestic cats. We've been receiving some questions from worried pet parents and would like to help answer some of these questions.
⭐️At the bottom of this post is a link to an AVMA overview that contains information on:

✨️1. How cats get this deadly virus✨️
➡️ Raw colostrum and other unpasteurized dairy products such as cream, exposure to infected wild birds or poultry, and exposure to people who work on affected farms and to their clothing or other fomites
✨️2. Clinical signs ✨️
➡️ Neurologic signs, blindness, severe depression, oculonasal discharge, respiratory signs
✨️3. What to do if you suspect your cat has bird flu✨️
➡️Contact your veterinarian asap
✨️4. How to prevent infection in your cat✨️
➡️Don't feed raw/undercooked foods/diets or unpasteurized dairy; keep cats indoors to prevent exposure to birds, poultry, and livestock; wash your hands after exposure to other animals; wash your hands and change your clothes if you are exposed to any sick or dead animals before interacting with your cat

Recalls:
There are some recalls on commercial raw cat foods that were contaminated with H5N1 and infected domestic cats. We always recommend to never feed raw as this can also be a source of bacterial infections such as E. Coli, Salmonella, Listeria, etc. These infections can carry a zoonotic risk. Raw diets also carry a risk of parasites and can be nutritionally imbalanced.

Since the U.S. outbreak of avian influenza A (H5N1) in dairy cattle began in March 2024, dozens of cats are known to have contracted the virus, including barn and feral cats, indoor cats, and big cats in zoos and in the wild (e.g., mountain lions, tigers, leopards, and bobcats).

Update: Lil Spencer is getting adopted!

Lil Spencer the 5 month old kitten survived the hurricane then was likely dumped. One of our veterinarian's brothers found him dumped and starving at the plant he works at (in another parish) the day after the hurricane. Lil Spencer is a very sweet boy who loves to be held and hug, is a star employee at the biscuit making factory, likes to suckle on blankets/sweatshirts, and follows you around like the little puppy that he is. He is fully vetted, litterbox trained, and up for adoption to an indoor home only. Please message us if you're interested in adopting our foster kitten!

(He got neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, felv/fiv tested [negative]), f***l, flea and heartworm prevention yesterday. He will need to be microchipped and a booster vaccine in 3 weeks ).
