A Minnesota resident who came into contact with a bat in July died of rabies, state health officials announced Friday.

The death marks a rare occurrence, as fewer than 10 people in the U.S. die from rabies each year, according to the CDC.

Venomous Northern Cottonmouth (Agkistrodon piscivorus) Plaquemines Parish. Notice that when looking down at back of head, you cannot see the eyes as they are covered with a scale. In Nonvenomous watersnakes, you’d be able to see their eyeballs. Black stripe across eyes, bordered in white. Brownish tones with white on belly side.
