If anyone has ever wanted solid evidence for why we recommend Kiln Dried Pine and prohibit CareFresh (and other paper based substrates), here is an excellent write up. It really is no contest which one is most effective. If you are allergic to KDP, Aspen and H**p are great alternatives!

A variety of environmental factors can effect the outcome of health in mice. One of these factors is bedding. In some cases psychological changes may occur due to the exposure of certain bedding types.

Characteristics of bedding should be amonia absorbant, moisture absorbent, inedible, non-toxic, readily available, non-deleterious to housing, free of dust and splinters. During a study on bedding types carefresh was thrown out on week 2 before the study had ended due to its inability to absorb ammonia effectively.

This study looks at the effects of multiple types of bedding on the growth, food intake, oxygen consumption, IgE antibody concentrations, and general appearance and behavior in male CD-1 mice. The least squares means ammonia concentrations in cages with CareFRESH Ultra bedding (44.7 ± 1.2 ppm) were lower than those in the prior experiment but significantly higher than in cages with pine bedding (11.2 ± 1.2 ppm).

Safe and effective bedding types for mice include:
● kiln dried pine
● Aspen
● Lab grade Harwood chip (sanichip)
● H**p

Paper bedding may be used as a nesting material or to add a small pop of color to your enclosure but is not recommended to be the only bedding in your enclosure. Poor amonia absorbsion can lead to heath risks involving the respatory system.

This was well said! We are closed for adoptions from Thanksgiving till Epiphany for this reason :). Applications can be submitted, but babies and adults will not be adopted out during this period. Thanks as always for your patience and understanding :D

Every year I get an influx of messages from parents wanting to “surprise” their kids with living, breathing, sentient animals. My response is always no. Animals are not surprises nor Christmas presents. They are unique individuals with needs and requirements for them to thrive. Rats are not disposable, rats are 1-3 year commitments. Don’t take this as an opportunity to have your kids miss out on getting a pet for Christmas. Instead, take it as a teaching moment- why it’s important to wait for responsibly bred animals, and why animals aren’t impulse purchases. Of course, there is exceptions to this, you know who you are

Happy Friday, y'all!

Boy, this year sure is flying by, ain't it?

It's been quiet around here lately, but hoping in the next few weeks I will have some adorable babies available for PET ONLY homes :). If you would like to go ahead and pre-apply for adoption, DM the page and request an adoption application! Once you have been approved, you can be on the lookout for the availability posts and not have to worry about re-applying!

I am also currently working on a breeder application for those of you who would like to obtain rats with breeding rights, but as the current litters are newer (to us) lines, none of them will be available to breeder or mixed-sex homes. I will make another post when that application is available :)

What’s Going on?

Imagine you couldn’t take your pets with you if you moved to another state, or stock your home aquarium.

Imagine rescuing tortoises and parrots made you a federal criminal.

Imagine zoos empty, unable to promote educational experiences for visitors to increase their appreciation for animals.

These are all possible consequences of bad legislation introduced by U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) in the “Lacey Act Amendments of 2023.”

The bill would create a federal "whitelist" of animals allowed to be moved interstate or imported. But a "whitelist" is really a blacklist--any animal not on the "whitelist" would be blacklisted. Pets and other species could be federally blacklisted by this proposal, creating huge problems for animals and the people who care for them.


ALERT: Lacey Act Amendments
U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-Florida) has again introduced a short-sighted bill to amend the Lacey Act, with the title ‘‘Lacey Act Amendments of 2023.” This bill would reverse the USARK federal lawsuit victory by reinstating the ban on interstate transportation of species listed as injurious under the Lacey Act. The bill would also create a “white list."

The amendments will create a new authority allowing FWS to use an “emergency designation” that becomes effective immediately after being published in the Federal Register unless an extension of no more than 60 days is allowed. That means no due process, public input, hearings, or advanced notice.

FWS will have the power to ban importation if a species has not been imported in “minimal quantities” (to be defined) in the year prior to the enactment of this Act.

These Dwarf females are just sooooooo cute! I hope to have some more available to pet homes later this year. If I end up making these available to non-breeder homes, they will be offered to my dwarf waitlist first. But I wanted to show off how cute they were in my bestie's hands. That was the only way they'd hold still LOL!

This is well written, and applies to my rattery. Please, do not rehome my rats for any reason, I will ALWAYS take them back, no questions asked. Life happens, circumstances can change, I promise I will always give them a safe home with no judgment as to the reasons for surrender. Thank you!
