Willow is looking for the perfect home. This was her very first session working through obstacles and I have to say I’m proud of her. She’s young, only 2 years old, she was untouchable when I first met her, in horrible condition, pregnant, and very scared. Helping one donkey at a time. This old man is not easy to handle and he is aggressive about his feet. So instead of neglecting him, with my instruction, his new owners built him a chute, took the time to teach him how to go into it for his grain (a reward) so that it’s a safe place, then started working with handling his mouth so they could get him sedated with dormosedan gel and this finally allowed me to trim all 4 feet 🙌

Too many people NEGLECT their donkeys! They deserve the same hoof care as a horse! It is extremely painful for them to stand around on these types of feet. The best thing I can compare it to for humans is wearing a pair of high heels that are too small for you, then add some rocks inside so that you can feel constant pressure points. Then tell me how your feet feel, your joints, your ligaments, your knees, your hips, your back, etc. etc. That is what it’s like for animals who have neglected hoof care.
Owners, it’s up to YOU to train and care for these animals. If you can’t do it, then don’t own them.
I am proud of these owners who acquired this donkey at his old age and put forth the time, money and effort to make his life better 🙌

They are quick to learn routines. Routines make your chores fast and easy. I can call them in from pasture and they come running
Anastasia Faith Pickles: 11 months old and learning to go on solo hikes, but also learning good ground manners. Learning how to patiently stand while I’m stopped and talking. This rolls into so many situations, where an animal should learn how to just stand quietly. Good ground manners is so incredibly important and we get that by being aware, being clear in our ask, and most importantly, being consistent. Pickles is learning to pay attention so closely that a few times in the video I can see my hands being too busy that she questions if she should step forwards or not. As humans, we can make mistakes in our communication and it’s okay to kindly correct them and say, “no, that’s actually not what I was asking. Sorry if I confused you, but still take a step back and wait where you were.” It is about being consistent. Donkeys and horses both need to learn good ground manners. It makes it more enjoyable for everyone!

I’m tired of hearing, “it’s just a donkey,” or “they’re stubborn and can’t be trained,” or “they’re always rude and pushy and dragging you around.” Etc. etc.
Hope definitely has some quirky moments of being sensitive, but she is a great example of how light and soft a donkey can be. What people don’t realize is that donkeys fight back against pressure. If you’re always hard, and you always have tension on the rope (like a dog who is always pulling on the leash) we never allow the opportunity for them to learn to be light and soft. Be aware of your hands
