A long but wonderful story of two elderly ladies with young hearts…
Several months ago a lady from North Carolina found us online and contacted us. Her sweet elderly mother had a sweet elderly dog, Sienna, a 14 year old lab. They were both living together in a retirement community until it seems that the elderly lady needed to be transferred from independent living to memory care. The memory care housing is more of a room with medical staff instead of her previous large apartment. With that said, Sienna would not be able to join her. They did not want to surrender Sienna to the Humane Society as a 14 year old dog, no matter how sweet, would not fare well nor would be easily adopted. The two elderlies stayed together until the moving day and then Cee-Cee was transported to Dogtree Pines. We thought Cee-Cee, who was separated from her life-long owner and was very overweight, would only last a few months. However, we put her on a healthy diet and started frequent walks and she has flourished. She looks years younger after losing the weight and now is able to speed by some of the younger dogs on walks. Cee-Cee still shows her age with her sweet gray face but is healthy and is enjoying her time here.
A few days ago, Connie the elderly lady’s daughter asked for a visit from Cee-Cee to her mother. We were able to bring Cee-Cee to visit her “mom” and she recognized her mom and nose bumped her wheelchair multiple times to say “hello”. We took pictures and heard “Hey there’s Cee-Cee” from several aides coming by. Each person received a hearty tail wag along with half of her body wiggling while Cee-Cee received a butt rub in return. It is true DTP does wonders for elderly dogs and sometimes we also do wonderful things for elderly people too! ❤️
