🔔K4 History: K4 Ranch was purchased in 1941 by prominent businessman J.W. Kieckhefer, president of the Kieckhefer Container Company. Seeking to diversify his holdings, and guided by trusted business associate Wirt Morton of Morton Salt Company, J.W. set his sights on Northern Arizona. That search led him to the K4, set along Walnut Creek, just north of Prescott.

What he found was extraordinary: some of the Southwest’s most diverse, productive rangelands and a ranch already steeped in legacy. Under his leadership, K4 became one of Arizona’s most recognized and historic operations, known for decades for its outstanding registered and commercial Hereford cattle.

In the 1940s, J.W.’s son, Robert “Bob” H. Kieckhefer, added a new chapter to the ranch’s story. He began raising Quarter Horses, registering his first horse in 1943, just three years after the American Quarter Horse Association was formed. His early purchases included reputable RO-branded horses from the neighboring Greene Cattle Company. Within ten years, K4-bred horses were earning national attention, competing, and winning, in racing, showing, and rodeo events across the country.
