Why does my dog need a good recall? How do I achieve a reliable recall? When should I give my dog off leash privilege's? These are all INCREDIBLY important questions to ask yourself and your trainer. Let's start with the first question, "why should they have recall?" and the shortest answer to that is, it can prevent a serous or life threatening injury. Some examples of times that it is necessary is in order to prevent your dog from approaching strange and possibly not friendly dogs, to keep them from going in the road and possibly getting hit, to keep them from running away and going missing, and so many other scenarios. The next question s how to achieve a good recall. It's important in order to be able to call your dog back to you in any situation. You need to be more valuable and interesting than whatever is going on around them. You need to teach your dog that coming to you is way better than anything they can find by themselves. You can do this by playing with your dog or giving them a high quality treat or lots of praise whenever they chose to come to you in a controlled environment. However they like to get rewarded is how you would reinforce them coming to you. Your dog should absolutely never have off leash privileges until you can be 1000% certain that they will come to you the first time and every time that you call them.

Have you ever heard of capture training? There are 2 major ways to train a dog to learn something new, there's luring your dog into the position that you want or to do the behavior that you want using treats, then there's observing your dog and capturing their behavior in real life and reinforcing that with praise or treats so they offer it more often. A lot of people believe that if they can't lure their dog into doing something then they can't train their dog to do it. 9/10 that simply isn't true. Let's use laying down as an example. In order to train your dog to lay down you can either use a treat in front of their nose to encourage them to lay down, or, you can watch them and wait for them to lay down then reinforce and praise them for it. Please reach out for guidance and advice if you need help!

Let's talk about setting your dog up for success! Something that we've noticed is that a lot of owners tend to rush their dogs progress and can push their dog to far. This can lead to anger or frustration on both ends of the leash and can ultimately set your dogs training back. It's important to remember to go at your dogs pace and not compare their progress to anyone else's. Additionally, it's important to remember that your dog is in fact just a dog. They don't have the ability to think through their choices in the same way a person does. This is why I advocate for the use of crates and clear boundaries in the house in order to help your dog understand what you want from them and allow less room for failure.

We often have people asking us for ways to bond with their dog. There are so many awesome options! The four umbrellas that you can bond with your dog through are food, work, play, and grooming. A lot of times people assume that their dog will create a strong and conducive bond with them through simply sitting on the couch and hanging out. Dog's love to work! There are some great ways to give them a clear job and incorporate food such as training while you are feeding them their dinner and using treats in order to train them. Dogs like to work for their resources and doing those things can cause their brains to work as well as reinforce that their resources come to you so they further look to you to fulfill their needs and you become more important than other things around them. If you need help with a specific plan to build your bond with your dog please reach out!

The importance of feeding your dog in something OTHER than a bowl. We constantly get asked the questions, what can I do to build my dogs confidence? And what can I do to strengthen my bond with my dog and gain their focus? The first question I ask is how are you feeding them? If you're feeding your dog using a bowl and finding that they have behavioural issues such as reactivity, destruction, separation anxiety, or just blatantly ignoring you ditch that bowl!! Dogs need to feel like they have a purpose in life. Feeding them while you train, feeding using an interactive toy such as a snuffle mat, or even simply scattering the food on the floor so they have to pick it up piece by piece can play a HUGE part I building your dogs confidence. If you would like guidance on using these tools and the best way for them to help your dog please message us!

We've been asked quite a few times, "how do I get my dog to stop barking?" The biggest thing is don't scold them for it!! If you scold them or yell at them it can feed into the energy of why they are barking and cause them to continue. They may stop temporarily but it will reinforce the behavior and cause them to continue down the road. Another important thing is to reward your dog for being quiet. Message us to set up an appointment if you need guidance or help!

Hello! I'm Sirus Liam Jimenez. I am the other half of this dog training duo!
I have been diligently training dogs for the past 3 years and have spent hundreds of hours researching and applying those techniques through trial and error to find what works best for my dogs and I, as well as clients and their dogs.
Although it may not seem like I have much experience, I have become very skilled in working with stubborn and difficult dogs, turning them into a pet that is a joy to bring around the neighborhood!
I am well versed in the use of balanced training; i.e. prong collars, e-collars, gentle leads etc. to work through difficult problems with the help of treats and positive reinforcement as well as a structured schedule.
I also have experience with service dog training as I have successfully trained 2 service dogs and I am in the process of training a third.
Through my active training and structure, one of my dogs has overcome her severe initial dog reactivity. She is now very neutral with dogs and has no reaction to new dogs at all.
I have also helped a previous dog of mine work through severe human reactivity, and trained him completely from the ground up after he spent the first two years of his life in a crate with no social structure whatsoever.

Using every training trick in my inventory, I will help you find what works best for you and your dog in order for you to have a great companion who can be safely and joyfully handled.

I work hard so the dogs can play even harder!

Hi all! My name is Lalei Newell Meikle. I'm part of the 2 person team of Don't Furget It Dog Training. I have been working with dogs for the past 10 years through breeding dogs for service work with my grandmother, showing, and going to school for animal science, as well as training my own service dog Ida and having a current service dog in training named Harley. I've helped dogs work through separation anxiety, reactivity with both people and dogs, and resource guarding behaviours as well as training basic and advanced obedience. I received training through the CKC in dog training and used to compete in vet tech and animal first aid competitions in high school. I currently comfortably manage a home with 5 dogs. 1 with managed speration anxiety, 1 who used to resource guard horribly, and 1 with managed genetic reactivity with new people. They have all learned in different ways and are thriving now. I use balanced training methods in order to find the best methods for each individual dog and owner and strive to create a happy, healthy, and confident dog through providing hands on guidance and advice with dog owners so they can continue their dogs progress independently.
