We are also home to Dr. Hopkins, DVM, as well as Dr. Danny Noble, DVM. We provide a broad spectrum of diagnostic procedures through in-house testing and the use of external laboratories. We also work closely with local practices when special

diagnostic procedures are required. The facility includes a well-stocked pharmacy, in-hospital surgery suite where we offer laser surgery, in-house x-ray capabilities, a closely supervised hospitalization area, and indoor boarding kennels with outdoor walking areas. We welcome new clients to our practice and look forward to meeting you.

DOG DRY MOUTH: What is it?

Dog dry mouth, also known as Xerostomia, can be a cause for real concern because dog saliva contains chemicals essential for your dog’s health. Dog saliva holds electrolytes, contains proteins and minerals that prevent dental cavities, lubricates the throat to aid in the digestive process. Dog saliva also contains antibacterial compounds that stop germs causing bad breath.

What causes Dry Mouth in dogs?
Dog dry mouth can be caused by a variety of factors. And some are more serious than others. Some factors may be dehydration, an adverse reaction to medication or possibly an abnormal immune reaction.

What are the symptoms of Dry Mouth?

-Bad breath
-Thick saliva
-Cracked tongue
-Plaque accumulation
-Mouth lesions
-Inflamed/bleeding gums
-Receding gums
-Food avoidance

Should you notice any of these symptoms, please give us a call at 410-651-1044.

June 21st is National Take Your Dog to Work Day

Tomorrow is National Take Your Dog to Work Day but before you make plans you may need to check with your boss. After all, not everyone is a dog lover.

Strut Your Mutt
If your boss agrees, make plans for a pet parade around the office during the day. It’s a great way for everyone to enjoy the day while you mingle and share pet stories.

Give Prizes
Give out prizes for the coolest pet outfit, the coolest dog trick, the smallest dog, or the tallest dog.

Pack Doggie Bags
No party is complete without food so pack dog treats and small dog toys for your guests.

Dogs set a ‘pawsitive’ mood so enjoy the day with your coworkers and fur babies.

Going to the beach can be a fun activity for friends and family to enjoy together. Because our dogs love to be with us, it can be a great idea to bring your dog along. However, there are some things to keep in mind.

Beware of Jelly Fish
Jellyfish can still sting, even when they have been dead for weeks. In dogs, stings may occur on the nose, mouth, paws and on areas of skin with little fur to protect them. A jellyfish sting can cause
vomiting or retching, swelling, distress and pain

Protect Your Dog from Heatstroke
When you are going to the beach, you must always think about heat stroke and dehydration, for yourself and for your dog. Try to avoid taking your dog to the beach during the middle of the day when the sun is most intense.

Sand
Eating sand may cause gastrointestinal upset and very occasionally, if a large volume is eaten, the sand may become impacted in the gut and cause blockage. Hot sand can also burn your dog's paws/pads. Remember: If it's too hot for your feet, it's too hot for his paws.

Sunburn
Like humans, dogs are susceptible to sun damage, and areas of the body with less fur cover such as the nose, ears and tummy, are at particular risk. The affected area may be red and tender to touch,
and skin may become dry and cracked

Shellfish poisoning
Shellfish feed on microorganisms that can produce toxins. These toxins can accumulate in the shellfish and can cause poisoning if eaten. Very occasionally pets may be poisoned by eating shellfish washed up on a beach.

Drowning
If your dog is small, short-legged, very young or a brachycephalic breed then it may be at risk of drowning, particularly in windy weather when the surf is rough. You may wish to fit a life jacket on
your dog but don’t use this as a substitute for safe behavior.

Encourage Your Dog to Drink Only Clean Water
Bring fresh, clean, cool water to the beach and a container from which your dog can drink it. As much as possible, don't allow him to drink from the body of water you're visiting because it may contain bacteria from the f***l matter of wild animals and other dogs.

It is the start of kitten season! So many cats and kittens are looking for their forever home! We dedicate this month and raise awareness in hopes that you will visit your local shelter to find your new animal companion. You also have to remember that taking on a new kitty or adult cat is a lot of work so please consider making sure you are ready to take on that responsibility. Have a great Thursday!

Good morning! Luna wanted to show off one of our new pieces of equipment… the oxygen cage. This cage provides oxygen therapy and/or supplemental oxygen to pets including cats and dogs of all ages and even exotics. We do have different sizes depending on the size of the animal. Of course Luna is laying in there while it is not in use but it is a very useful and vital tool that we have here in our hospital!

06/03/2024

We know that all of you are wonderful pet owners but here are a few reminders for the hot weather ahead:

*Never leave your pet in a car. On a mild to hot day, temperatures in a closed car (even with the windows cracked) can exceed 120 degrees in minutes, creating a very dangerous condition for any animal. Cracking a window or parking in the shade does not help.

*Give your pet extra water. Staying hydrated is crucial on hot days to avoid illness. Whether your pet is indoors or outdoors, be sure to fill their water bowls several times a day.

*Protect your pet’s paws from hot surfaces. Walk your pet in the grass or the shade whenever possible. A quick tip: if the pavement is too hot for your bare hands or feet, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws. If you need to take them outside to do their business, try wetting the surface with a hose or water bottle to help make it a little cooler for them.

*Don’t overdo outdoor exercise. Oftentimes, dogs don’t know when they need a break, so it’s important to stop frequently for shaded breaks and offer plenty of water.

*Take extra care with older dogs and dogs with shorter noses. Just like older humans, older dogs can be especially susceptible to higher temperatures. And certain breeds with shorter noses (like pugs and bulldogs) are at a greater risk of heatstroke.

*Apply pet-safe sunscreen to your dog. Sunburn can affect pets the same way it affects humans – pain, peeling, and skin cancer. Use a pet-safe sunscreen on unprotected areas, like the tips of the ears, the skin around the lips, and the tip of the nose. A good rule of thumb for sunscreen: If it’s safe for babies, it’s safe for your pets.

*When in doubt, stay indoors. Avoid being outside for long periods of time during the hottest time of the day, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Take walks earlier in the morning to avoid as much of the heat as you can. Animals can get sick quickly on hot days, even if they are in the shade.
