Hey everyone, let’s get back to talking about heartworms and preventions. Like we talked about before, it all starts with an infected mosquito biting your dog. This now begins what is known as the larvae stage. This is when the timer really starts because of how heartworm preventatives work. The way these work is by killing the heartworm at the larvae stage. Time is very important because prevention is only effective against larvae, and it only takes 30 to 45 days for larvae to become juvenile adults. A common misconception is that monthly preventative protects your dog for the next 30 days. The reality is that monthly preventative is in, and out, of your dog’s system in one day and kills the larvae from the previous 30 days. This is why we like yearly preventative so much. There is less chance of you forgetting a round of preventative and your dog being susceptible to heartworms. As always, it is best to talk with your vet to figure out what prevention plan is best for your dog.
