Itchy pet relief
The truth is there are many types of allergies in dogs and cats. They can be brought on by allergens found in plants, animals, insects or even foods or medicines. In particular, seasonal allergies are usually a result of environmental elements such as plant pollens or mold spores from blooming or dying plants and leaves. You may notice your pet only has symptoms during a specific time of year such as spring or fall and these allergy symptoms may, or may not coincide with a specific plant blooming or when the leaves are decomposing in autumn. While there's no cure for seasonal allergies we do have great recommendations and treatments to help.
Seasonal allergies can show up as any combination of these symptoms:
Red, inflamed skin
Hotspots
Itching/scratching at the skin, underarms, or ears
Chewing at the underside of the paw pads
Nose rubbing on the ground
Frequent ear infections
Licking at or scooting their a**l glands on the ground
Frequent sneezing
Seasonal Allergy Pet Tips:
Gently wipe your pets paws with a pet friendly wipe when they come in from the outdoors to decrease the amount of pollens or mold spores on their fur and skin.
If your pet is a 'low rider' breed like a dachshund, corgi or terrier you will also want to gently wipe the fur on their underside for the same reason.
Use a dehumidifier in areas of the home that might produce molds or mildews.
Use an air purifier.
Keep your pet up to date on its flea/tick preventative. Some seasonal allergies are caused by fleas, and some animals are highly allergic to flea bites.
Keep your lawn mowed shorter.
Clean your pet's bedding once a week in hot water.
Treatments:
Prescription Medications: There are many different prescription medications available for allergy suffering pets, from tablets to shampoos. Finding the right medication to bring your pet relief is best done with an examination and review by our doctor. In some cases it is necessary to clear an infection on the skin with an antibiotic at the same time as treating the allergy symptoms to bring relief.
Over the Counter Medications: Before using any over the counter medications it is important to give our office a call. We will review your pet's medical history and see if the medicine is appropriate to give and if so, what is a proper and safe dose for your pet. Pet dosing is very different from human dosing.
Desensitization (Immunotherapy) is done by testing your pet and determining exactly which allergens your pet is reacting to. Then we build up your pet's tolerance to the allergen over time with injections.
Together we can help your pet have a comfortable season!
