Lillee sure makes riding her horse Lane look easy these days, but that wasn’t always the case. This little girl has put a lot of HARDWORK into getting this big gelding to work well for her and now she makes it look easy! Way to go kiddo! 👏
Had to share a highlight from our Mounted Shooting Clinics this weekend.
This little lady, at only 13 yrs old stole the show. 👏
Teagan and her horse Bullwinkle killed it, literally.
Karri Miller you better get her some guns now!
Way to go Teagan, all your practice riding and horsemanship was showing today introducing your horse to a new thing. He wasn’t the quietest one when we first started firing and you really brought him around to end on a note like this.

Why go slow?
Because going to fast to soon can create problems that take longer to fix then just spending more time up front at the beginning with them to start with.
I’m not saying every horse has to be able to walk and shoot, some just aren’t that way. I’m just saying be careful how much pressure you put on them too soon and too fast. Bad habits are easy to make when we let them run without a decent foundation.
This mare- Rhythm- is a chicken. She’s more scared of ballon pieces then she is of the actual gunfire. She’s been shot off of at home, and is a cool cucumber about it, but in the show pen with all the extra stimuli she wasn’t as confident.
Confidence is key.
Confidence & being sound keep your horse wanting to go in that pen.
Confidence takes time, and gaining it is a different process for every horse.
It would have been easy for me to let her clock on certain patterns too soon, but she would have been running scared. Yah, it would have been faster, I might have pulled bigger checks sooner, I might have not eaten those entry fees, but I’d have been shooting my self in the foot and dealing with bad habits later that take more entry fees to fix.
I’ve made that mistake before…
So we will go whatever pace she needs, the rollercoaster ride of seasoning, but I won’t go faster than her mind can handle and I’ll listen to her when she’s scared and herd the chickens back in her coop when they scatter.
She’s already going in the pen more confident, she’s rating, and she isn’t running home scared and fast to get out of the pen, and her chickens are staying in her coop the whole run. ♥️
Remember, take your time starting them, you won’t regret it. You will regret going to fast too soon and it’s easy to do.
He embodies fire breathing dragon with all his steam. 🔥
Just Julia and Peanut putting in some work this winter. I’m so excited to see them in the spring!

What a beautiful fall day. 🍁
Charlotte & Felony got to spend some time in the arena this morning.
One of the many reasons we highly value ground manners around here. I wouldn’t consider a horse “safe” without them. Period.

Kids are never to young, or adults for that matter, to learn and work on having “feel”.
Some acquire it more naturally than others, but it is a learnable skill if you focus on it. It also helps to have someone guiding you and giving you focal points to draw from. This is also where having a nice broke horse or riding one can be highly beneficial to helping you learn, verses grasping at straws with one that doesn’t know anymore than you do.
Kenna is working with her horse Jameson to help him learn to break at the pole better and be softer in the face when we bridle him up, or pick up on our bridle reins. Kenna has been fortunate and rode other horses that already had these buttons installed, so she has a grasp on what she’s feeling for through her seat and hands already. Her horse is also kind and gentle so when her timing isn’t perfect he’s forgiving.
Slow, and simple work well to teach this to riders, and horses. It doesn’t have to be fancy, but what we focus on is the riders timing. If the horse isn’t getting it, or “not cooperating” usually it’s because the rider is not being clear with what they want or consistent with what they are trying to teach. The sooner a rider or a kid grasp this concept the better horseman they become.
Focus on feel. Your never to young or old to learn to read and feel your horse better. 👏

Just look at her now! 👀
Just a little tyke trotting around barrels, to running around them at a horse show.
I’ve gotten to watch Ava not only become quite the young horseman that I am so proud of, but also mature and grow as a young lady.
She never backs down from the challenges I put her up to in the arena, and is more diligent about her rides than a lot of adults I know. This girl is going places in life and I am privileged to be a small part of that. 👏

She won’t toot her own horn so we will do it for her. 👏 🎺
Andrea Lodermeier was successful at the shoot this past weekend as well. She brought her 4 yr old mare to her first ever shooting competition and did excellent with her.
She’s raised this mare and put a lot of time and thought into making this moment a positive experience for her and I’d say she definitely accomplished that!
I got the privilege to help start Blue in her career as a mounted shooting horse this spring and couldn’t be more proud of the both of them. It was fun to watch it all come together. They are just getting started.

B.R. Guest Riders and I had busy weekend, but one for the memory books.
Congrats Morgan Pugsley on entering your first Mounted shooting competition! 👏
Congrats Jessica Anderson (Creative Images by Jessica Marie) on entering your first barrel racing event aboard our special mare Felony! 💜
Congrats Kenna (Ashley Wachman Colberg) on entering your first ever competitions with your very own horse this time! Mounted shooting & Barrel Racing. Strong 💪
My own horses ran their way to a personal best time on the barrel pattern, a 1D mounted shooting win, and my newbie got lots of first time exposure to guns, cows, and barrel events. 💜
My heart is incredibly full after a busy weekend. Horse show hangover is in full effect today!
