Shrek (HH Savvy/Burndale Ben) He started out being afraid of the sheep...at 6 months old he would just look for ways out of the training pen.... around 7 months old he turned on and has been on fire ever since... He is now 13 months old and becoming more sure of himself every day. He is starting to demonstrate that he inherited some good genes from his grandmother, G.S. Kallan. She has always been good at tracking and hunting stock. His mother Savvy is good at it as well. I just turned my cows out on the neighbors pasture last week and Shrek has only been out in the pasture about 3 times and only at the near end.. Yesterday...by the time I sent him around the cows they had disappeared, heading to the far end. Today I worked a couple of other dogs then left to put them away and bring Shrek back. The cows were gone so I decided to put Shrek to the test. He passed.. The cows had gone clear to the far end where Shrek has never been....probably over 1000 yards... completely out of sight and ear shot from me... He is a bit of a show off like his grandmother. And... he is getting self confident enough that he is starting to think he doesn't need me telling him what to do... but... a little chat and he remembers that we are a team. :)

Whirlwind Sam! He seemed like he was going to be quite the handful when he first came back to me.. but he really tries to do the right thing. He is super easy to handle and a quick study. I will show him soon.

Cato. He is doing well considering he has really only been in training for a couple of months. He was too sensitive for much training until a couple of months ago. Maverick! Littermate to Whirlwind Sam. As a little puppy he was designated to go to a pet home! Then...the people backed out... A few months later when Maverick was showing a lot of promise as a stock dog, a cattle rancher and his wife put a deposit on him but asked to leave him here until he is trained.. Like his sire, Cozzmo, he was very sensitive in the training pen until about a month ago and then all of a sudden he has been on fire and his training is progressing well. He has progressed to the point that I am doing long outruns with him and just started teaching him to drive.. I have never tried to control him from a distance other than to send him out and let him retrieve the stock. Yesterday...he was doing so well with his drive that I got carried away out in the pasture and had him push the sheep quite a distance away from me....then...the sheep took off and I sent Maverick around... in an all new situation and a little excitement things didn't go perfectly and the sheep ended up splitting...two ran up the hill and one went and mingled with the cows... to my amazement I was able to guide Maverick to just bring the one sheep out of the cows and then sent him up the hill after the runaway sheep.... way beyond anything he has done in training... one sheep went to my horse up on the hill and Maverick maneuvered her away from the horse like a pro.....then let me guide/control him from a distance and was able to get the sheep back to me and continue our work. He impressed me! A lot of good instinct and try in this nice 11 month old pup! Video starts with him bringing the one that mingled with the cows.

Whirlwind Sam is coming along with leaps and bounds... Signed him up for his first trial in April... We have a ways to go but at the current pace, he will be ready by then!

A huge milestone today with Sam.... Big accomplishment...being able to walk in a small pen and bring the sheep out without blowing up.... Such a good boy!

Harley is looking for his special person. He was whelped 3/19/23. He is currently neutered and UTD on shots. Lightly started on sheep and cows. Video link below. Both parents are good working dogs, great for a small farm/ranch and Harley seems to be more like his mother who is a laid back easy to be around farm dog who now has a flock of sheep of her own to herd. Like his mother, Harley is sensitive in the training pen and isn't generally a ball of fire at this stage of his life.. His mother got more keen as she matured and got more confidence and I am sure Harley will as well but may not have what is needed to be a trial dog... He does put the hustle on when I let him guard the cows/sheep out of the feeder while I am feeding. :) He will be a great family pet and farm helper. He is sweet and mellow. Both parents were health tested so I can say that Harley is not at risk for any genetic diseases. Located in north Idaho. 208-669-2823 PM or call for info.

Whirlwind Sam is progressing well. He is fun to work with and train... He is doing great with sheep...will be needing to work on being in close without blowing up but he is impressing me most of the time... we will also be working cows more in the near future..

This popped up as a memory on my personal page.... My first ever cow dog trial buckles... My first year of trialing.. My pound puppy Jewel and I won our class for the year... we have come a ways since then.. Jewel has crossed the rainbow bridge since then...Several more dogs...a few more buckles... but it's really all about training and watching amazing dogs do what they are bred to do.

Whirlwind Sam... I may start calling him Big Sam. Big dog, big bones, big stride, big heart, big presence.. He recently came back to me after being sold because he is just too much dog for the small goat herd he was supposed to work. I am excited about him. I think he will excel in ranch work and trialing. Successful Match! Bing has arrived at his new home..

Bing! Unique! Looking for that perfect person for him. He is a well bred boy with a goofy and friendly disposition. He loves to play and loves his sheep herding jobs. He has become pretty handy. I wouldn't call him finished by any means but he is coming along pretty well. Recently started on cows as well. Looking for that someone that wants a playful friend that can help them with their stock and maybe go to some trials. Not asking a lot for him because he does come with a minor special need. I had a HUGE moment with Bandit today!! He was ALL about chasing deer when he came almost a year ago and I used the e-collar. hasn't been an issue since but he hasn't really had a lot of opportunity. This evening I was getting ready to send Bandit up to the other end of the field to retrieve the cows... There was a deer smack dab in the middle of the meadow... I moved around a lot and made noise and it finally left...went up the field a little bit. I sent Bandit on an away hoping he'd go to the fence but he went straight up the middle...came upon the deer, it ran, he chased, I yelled his name...he STOPPED and CAME BACK!!!!!!!!!!. the deer went up and went through the cows. I sent Bandit again and he went and brought the cows! 🙂

The right tool for the job! I have learned in recent years that the right tool for the job can make the difference between a quick, easy job, or a long, frustrating job... I am learning that it is no different in training stock dogs. I have one that is not yet two years old and I have had a problem with him from day one wanting to come in on the stock rather than stay out on their bubble and rate them. I have tried the flag, the paddle, sticks, I have used the longe whip before... He was afraid of the longe whip but the other tools only were effective for a short time. Now that he is maturing a little I tried the longe whip again. One crack over top of the sheep and an amazing transformation took place. Two days in a row he has stayed out and watched the sheep rather than look for a way to sneak in. Right tool, right time... I am encouraged. :)

Bandit is really proving himself lately. I can send him up the hill into the 30 acres of steep hill and trees and trust that he is going to bring the cows.. This morning I sent him...and he didn't return...and didn't return, and didn't return... I set out to go find him and see what the trouble was....but I looked up...and there were the cows coming....with Bandit behind!! Good job buddy!

The neighbor got three steers yesterday... they found their way in with my bunch. I decided to test Bandit on some he didn't know... He did good. The three at the protein tub and the neighbors.. I will say.. it got a little western after I quit recording...when I sorted them off and drove them back where they belong... Had to get assistance from some of my old tried and true dogs... but Bandit helped.! Thirty 5 hundred and he can help you too! Located in north Idaho. 208-669-2923

SOLD!

Dog broke sheep available. 1 hundred twenty 5 per each... Five ewes.. one of them probably a cull. Five wether lambs (feeders) and 2 ewe lambs...(feeders or replacement). One yearling ewe that aborted a few weeks ago.

Where's the beef? These three yearling Jersey gals will be available this fall...hopefully bred; to calve around May next year... Will probably be looking for 12 hundred each.... The one with the calf is Zelda... She is a 3 year old and just had her second calf...(not the calf pictured). She has been feeding two calves but has also been hand milked and will be available when I wean the calves this fall... Will be asking $1500.00 for Zelda. She was probably producing around 4 gallons a day when she was fresh two weeks ago... Hard to tell when the calf is still nursing.

Bandit is a 5 year old, intact, ABCA registered male Border Collie looking for ranch work. He will work sheep or cattle. He bites both ends clean. He is a high drive dog and needs a job to work his brain as well as his body! Attaching video showing him gathering and moving sheep first, then cattle. I used him for the first time in the pens, sorting sheep and he did very well. He had one lamb break and run and he got ahead and stopped it without being rough....and without a word from me to remind him to be gentle. He impressed me! I also had him help me put a couple of baby calves in their pen for the night and he did outstanding. For 35 hundred he can be your new ranch hand! Health tested clear other than one copy of EOD. I now have four males available from Candi's litter.. Sorry I have better pics of some than other's. Some are more cooperative...
Here is the info:

1) Split face, tri colored male.... seems to have a laid back disposition like both of his parents.. I exposed him to sheep briefly and she showed interest....fough coat. 8 weeks old today....5/14/23

2) Blk/wht male... traditional BC markings... laid back dispostion but dominant with the siblings....He did show interest in the sheep during his brief exposure. rough coat... 8 weeks old today.. 5/14/23

3) tri colored male with white on his right ear. Going to be a big, floppy eared boy like his sire but seems highly driven and definitely interested in the sheep during his brief exposure. smooth coat. 8 weeks old today. 5/14/23

4 Tri colored male that is very possibly a seal color rather than black. Seems like a laid back boy but did show interest in the sheep during his brief exposure. Smooth coat. 8 weeks old today 5/14/23

All have had their first DAP shot and wormed at 2,4,6 and 8 weeks.

Split Face got himself in trouble today. Thank you LORD that I was home and went to check on puppies... Yesterday I came home and all 6 puppies were in the kennel next to theirs with another dog....who thankfully...was kind to them... I tried to fix it so they couldn't get underneath but obviously didn't do the trick. I went down to check and saw one puppy on the other side in the other kennel. When I went to get him back I found Split Face with his head stuck.. He apparently got his head under and in his struggle to get further he moved to where he couldn't get his head back. He was in the sun and panting.. I took him to Mama and made sure he got some nourishment and then a good drink of water... He is the biggest of Candi's litter and didn't quite fit after my attempt and fixing the problem. It now has a small roll of chain link fence in the gap.
