As we all get ready for all the delicious food that comes with the Thanksgiving Holiday, it can be so very tempting to have our pets partake in the festivities. It is important to remember that our pet's bodies are not used to the variety of foods we eat on a day to day basis.

While it is okay for them to have a taste, it is important to ensure they do not have excessive amounts of anything as this can lead to GI upset and in some situations Pancreatitis. Remind relatives to refrain from giving table scraps to the pets to allow more control of what and how much they consume.

Signs your pet may have overdone it with the goodies:
-Vomiting
-Diarrhea
-Lethargy
-Decreased Appetite
Hunched Back

Please seek emergency care if these symptoms become apparent over the holiday weekend. Please call the clinic on Monday if any concerns arise during hours.

Have a safe Thanksgiving! 🐾🦃

Give to the Max Day is today! If you have no idea what this means, it is the day that has been set aside for giving a little extra to your favorite non-profit organizations! The holidays are about giving, so let’s kick off the holidays today!

There are a variety of organizations aimed to help animals! Retrieve a Golden of the Midwest (RAGOM) or Animal Humane Society are a few of SLVC’s favorites!

Give to the Max started in 2009 as a one-time campaign to mark the launch of GiveMN.org, Minnesota's digital home for generosity. The results of that day—$14 million raised in just 24 hours—blew everyone's expectations out of the water, and a new Minnesota tradition was born. In fact, Give to th...

One of the most common changes we see as our pets get older is the decline in their mobility. This is often caused by Osteoarthritis. This can greatly affect the quality of life in our Senior Patients.

Signs of Arthritis can be subtle.
• Slow to get up from laying down
• Less enthusiasm on walks
• Hesitating to jump onto furniture
• Hesitancy to use stairs
• Head bobbing when walking

What can we do to prevent this? An easy daily regiment to add into your pets routine is a Glucosamine Supplement. These often come in the form of chewy treats which makes it an easy addition to help keep their joints as healthy as possible. These supplements can be used preventatively at any age or to help maintain joints that may already have arthritic changes to help minimize discomfort.

Contact the clinic to learn more on where to find these products and any other recommendations we may have on how to keep joints healthy!

In honor of Veterans Day, we cannot forget about the canine heroes who served alongside our soldiers.

Canines have played a large role in the U.S. military dating back to the 1900s. Their role started small in World War I as sled dogs helping travel through tough terrain. Their role evolved due to the immense need of medical personnel on the battlefield. "Mercy Dogs" would carry medical supplies to wounded soldiers, then alert their handlers to the soldiers' whereabouts. The K-9 Corps was officially recognized in 1942, and their role evolved, once again, to include Sentry Duty, Messengers, and Scout Dogs. They patrolled borders, carried messages and supplies to soldiers, and detected enemies before an attack could occur. They also provided moral to their human counterparts while they endured harsh conditions together. Canines have continued to serve in our military and play important roles even today.

"Today, their roles have expanded to include explosives detection, patrol work, search and rescue operations, and even specialized tasks such as detecting narcotics or tracking down adversaries. Their keen senses, agility, and unyielding dedication make them invaluable assets." (Solders' Angels)

November is Senior Pet Awareness Month! Our pets inevitable hit their Senior Years much quicker than we like to acknowledge. We consider 7 years of age or older a Senior Patient. As pet parents, it is our job to recognize changes and take action to keep our pets happy and healthy.

Our pets can have drastic changes happen to their bodies without even showing signs or symptoms. This is why we recommend Senior Exams with a Veterinarian every 6 months as well as screening Lab-work regularly for these internal changes we may not catch in their every day life.

If your Senior Pet is due for an Exam or Lab-work, let us know! We are happy to help, and we want you to have as much time with your family member as possible! 🐾

Friendly reminder for everyone to pay close attention to your pets with Halloween coming up this week! Although this is an extremely fun Holiday, it's important to keep in mind the dangers it can bring to our pets. If an accidental ingestion occurs with your furry friend, give the clinic a call as soon as you are aware it happens. Treatment options can become limited the longer you wait after ingestion!

😱 Think we don’t see creepy crawly fleas in October in Minnesota? Think again! We just saw and treated a patient with fleas this morning! Now that’s SPOOKY!

This time of year, many start to consider when Flea and Tick prevention becomes unnecessary. Until temperatures consistently stay below freezing, these critters are still a concern. Here in Minnesota, the temperatures can vary greatly during autumn, and even during winter months. While it is true that as temperatures cool down, fleas and ticks become less active. This does not mean they are unable to infest our pets. In fact, they become more desperate to find a host in order to survive. In doing so, they are able to spread a variety of diseases. These critters inhabit our back yards, and a thorough check of your pet is recommended upon coming inside as well as the use of Flea and Tick Prevention.

Thankfully we have many great options for medications to keep you and your pets safe from these pests as well as the numerous diseases they carry! Our staff would be happy to talk to you about to how protect your family!
