Can't keep up with the Minnesota weather? Us either! When it comes to our pets, it's better to be safe than sorry. Just like us, when the temperature goes up, we want to be outside with our pets, but so do the creepy crawlies! Start doing Tick Checks on your pets when coming in from outside! Keep up on monthly Flea/Tick/Heartworm Prevention!

Here is a look at the level of risk for Tick Borne Illnesses in the U.S. in 2025. It's only March, which means these numbers will only be increasing!

What can I do to prevent my pet from developing Dental Disease?

There are a variety of different methods to Preventative Dental Care. We encourage any or all of them! Set your pet up for success by introducing these methods at a young age!

-Teeth brushing - Best results if done 2-3 times per week at minimum, remember to use pet friendly toothpaste!

-Daily Dental Chews - Our favorite products are Veggidents and OraVet Chews

-Water Additives - Aquadent is the brand we like! Works similar to mouth wash for humans.

-Dental Toys - A great option for the chewers! The Kong brand has both durable but safe options that won't break teeth!

-Regular Dental Cleanings - Just like us, our pets need regular dental cleanings and check-ups done too!

Safe chewing habits can greatly decrease the risk of fractured and worn teeth in our pets. Fractured teeth pose the risk of pain and infection, both of which are treated by surgical extraction of the tooth.

There are a variety of treats, toys, and bones that are marketed to be safe for our pets. Aside from causing broken teeth, they can also be choking hazards, cause GI upset, or cause bowl obstructions.

What can my pet chew on? There are a few tests you can do to see if a toy or treat is soft enough for your pet's teeth (AAHA).

ā€¢ Thumbnail test ā€” Press your thumbnail into the chew toy surface. If you canā€™t leave an indentation, the toy is too hard.
ā€¢ Bending test ā€” Your pupā€™s chew toys should bend slightly.
ā€¢ Hammer test ā€” If a toy is so hard that you canā€™t drive a nail through, your dog shouldnā€™t be chewing it.

Take a look at the diagram below for a general guideline on what is and is not safe! (AAHA)

All the Doctors at Scott Lake are getting some extra Ultrasound Training throughout the next couple of months. Dr. Tom and Dr. Kelly got to practice on Penelope, an employee pet, today. As you can see, Penelope enjoyed a nice nap during the training.

When a tooth becomes infected, the bacteria gets trapped below the gumline. This is called an abscess. The bacteria not only damages the bone holding the tooth in place, but the tooth roots themselves. This largely goes unseen because it is below the gumline. It's not until we see the damage on x-ray and extract the tooth that we see the full extent of an abscess. We can watch out for signs of mouth pain. You may also smell an odor coming from the mouth or notice facial swelling near the jaw or below the eyes.

One of most common sources of oral pain in our feline friends is Feline Oral Resorptive Lesions.

Resorption is a painful process that involves the body attempting to dissolve the tooth into bone. This process can be found in canines, but is a more prevalent issue in felines.

They are often diagnosed via Dental X-rays during a Dental Procedure. Depending on severity, treatment often includes either surgical extraction of the tooth or a crown amputation.

Ouch! If you have experienced a tooth ache, then you know exactly how painful it can be. There are many reasons that our pets may experience pain from the mouth including fractured teeth, infection, resorptive lesions, and gingivitis.

Our pets arenā€™t able to say ā€œouchā€ so how can we determine if their mouth is painful? Our pets instinctively hide their pain; therefore, the signs can be subtle.
Watch out for:
-Dropping food while eating.
-Hesitancy to eat hard kibble, but will eat soft foods
-Teeth Chatter (as if shivering)
-Pawing at the face
-Excessive Drool
-An Odor
-Facial Swelling
-Red or inflamed gums
-Asymmetrical Tarter Build-up
-Chewing on one side of the mouth

If your pet is showing any of these behaviors or symptoms, schedule an appointment to discuss options with your petā€™s Veterinarian. Your pet may qualify for our Dental Month Promotion. The good news is Dental Disease is fixable as well as preventable!

Why are Dental X-rays an essential part of a Dental Procedure? Above the gumline, we are only able to evaluate half of the tooth. X-rays allow us to visualize the tooth roots, the bone, and the center of the tooth which is called the pulp chamber. Most conditions that we find in our pets' mouths are diagnosed with Dental X-rays. These conditions include fractured teeth, abscesses, resorptive lesions, and more.

What is a Dental Procedure? An anesthetized procedure that involves cleaning, polishing, and evaluating the health of the each tooth with the use of dental x-rays. Any treatments will then be performed such as surgical extractions, crown amputations, or gingivectomies. Preventative Dental Procedures are often performed on an annual basis depending on the Veterinarian's recommendation.
