Today Zubrod Stables was lucky to host a group of teens and young adults through Greater Louisville Youth for Christ. The group was made up of 14 boys and girls ages 11 through 22 from the West End of Louisville, an underprivileged area where horses are not at their disposal. We were looking forward to hosting them, and the event today exceeded all of our expectations!
Thanks to our wonderful customers - because of their generous donations, we were able to put on the event for free for this group, along with donated snacks and treats, and awesome swag bags from UofL Equine - University of Louisville Equine Industry Program thanks to Shelby Eisenback. It was a wonderful experience for this group of teens. I have no doubts that this will be a lifelong memory for them.
I also just want to take a minute to talk about privilege. That one simple word, can take on many meanings. The kids that ride at Zubrod are privileged. They have had many opportunities handed to them over the years. They are lucky kids. Their problems in day to day life are small compared to what some of the kids who came today were faced with. But, they are gracious and grateful kids. We may forget sometimes and they may too from time to time - but they are.
Privilege. I also feel incredibly privileged to know and be a part of these counselors lives. Every single one of them made me so proud today. They were compassionate, reassuring, enthusiastic, and truly the best representation of Zubrod Stables and what we strive to be and stand for. I feel like maybe growing up with these horses in their lives helped contribute to a small part of that, but kudos to you parents for raising good humans.
Many of the kids (and young adults) that came today have never had the opportunity to be around animals in their life. Much less a horse. To be able to touch them, run their fingers alongside them, have the confidence to lead them, and then ride them, was truly a gift. Their enthusiasm and excitement will stick with me for a long time. I was so proud to see those that were nervous and had trepidation get the confidence to try it out, step into that stirrup and swing their leg over a horse for the first time. They gave up control and trusted us to keep them safe. And Iโm grateful to them for that opportunity. I am privileged that I got to know them today and that they will have those core memories for a lifetime as well.
Lastly, I am privileged to have these amazing animals in my life - and selfishly Iโm so grateful to all of them for representing how wonderful these creatures are today. They were perfect. Quiet and kind and loving. They touch our souls - and Iโm certain these kids were touched by them too.
Stay tuned for more opportunities. As Iโm sure we will have the privilege of doing more in the future! If you would like to help with a future event - financially or in person, please reach out to me!!
