While household cleaners have made it quick and easy to disinfect your home and keep it germ-free, our pets can be sensitive to some of the ingredients found in commercial cleaners, and some can even make them sick. Check out our blog to learn more about some common household hazards found in cleaning supplies and how to keep your pet safe! https://www.prosperanimalhospital.com/post/household-cleaners

As we prepare for the possibility of winter weather tomorrow, this is a gentle reminder that if you are too cold, then it is probably too cold for your pets! Keep your pets safe and warm inside with you ❄️ Here are some quick tips for keeping your pets safe in the cold:

-Keep them indoors. Many outdoor dog houses are advertised as insulated, but this is not the same as climate controlled and will not provide sufficient warmth for pets to stay comfortable in extremely low temperatures.

-Keep trips outside short - minimize walks and yard time by only going out to potty when it's cold or icy.

-Bundle them up! Dogs with shorter coats, puppies, and senior dogs may benefit from a coat or sweater to keep them insulated and protected from the wind.

-Avoid bathing unless necessary, and make sure to thoroughly dry your pet off before sending them outside - similarly, if your pet goes out to play in the snow, make sure to dry them off with a towel when they come back inside.

Stay safe this week!

As we head into the holidays next week, here are a few quick tips to keep your pets safe this Christmas!

If your pet has an emergency outside of our business hours, contact your nearest local emergency animal hospital for immediate assistance. Please do not message our Facebook or Instagram with medical questions in the event of an emergency.

-Whether you are staying home or traveling, take a few minutes to look up emergency animal hospitals near you and confirm their holiday hours so you know where you can take your pet in the event of an emergency.

-If your pet gets nervous when guests are over, find a designated room or place for your pet's crate so they have somewhere quiet to go where they can feel safe.

-As people are coming and going, be mindful of where your pets are - it's not uncommon for indoor pets to sneak outside and get lost when doors are accidentally left open!

-Avoid feeding pets table scraps and ensure that any party food is kept well out of reach of pets, especially animal bones, and ingredients that are toxic to pets such as chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes/raisins, alcohol, etc. Rich and fatty foods can cause stomach upset, even when the ingredients themselves aren't considered "toxic."

-If lighting candles or the fireplace, make sure your pets stay away from any open flames and that the candles are not set in a place where they could be knocked over by a pet.

-Pets can be drawn to Christmas decorations and wrappings such as ribbons, tinsel, tissue paper, bows, etc. If ingested, these items can cause serious problems including an intestinal blockage. While unwrapping presents, be sure that all gift wrappings are accounted for and disposed of properly!

-In the event that your pet does have an after-hours emergency, take pictures and bring any "evidence" to the ER with you. For example, if your pet gets into a bag of holiday candy, take a picture of the label or bring the packaging with you.

We hope you all have a great holiday with your friends, family, and pets! Have fun and stay safe ❤
