‼️ HEAT ALERT ‼️
We are approaching out first heat wave of the season. The next couple of days are predicted to be VERY hot. If you do not have to bring your pets anywhere, please leave them home. It can be incredibly dangerous to expose your pets to high heats.

Here are some tips to keep your pets safe during the hot months:
🔥Limit your pets' outdoor exposure. If you need to go outside, make sure you have a fully shaded area and water easily accessible.
🔥If you cannot leave your hand on the pavement for at least 5 seconds it is TOO HOT to walk your pet. Stick to grassy areas if possible.
🔥Take walks/hikes during the cooler parts of the day (early morning, late evening).

If you see a pet in a car on a hot day and that car is off/windows not opened or the pet looks to be in distress. PLEASE REPORT IT as it is illegal in RI to leave a pet in a car on a hot day. It can take as little as 2 minutes for the inside of a vehicle to spike in temperature.

This week is Veterinarian Appreciation week -- if you see any of these faces this week, please make sure to let them know how truly appreciated they are ❤

Our Veterinarians at PRAH pour their heart and soul into all their patients, each and every day. We would not be able to be as great as we are without our amazing team of Dr's. These Dr's are not only here for your pets, they're here for you, their owners, as well. There are so many hats that a veterinarian will wear, some of which include: surgeon, dentist, therapist, a shoulder to cry on, professional puppy/kitten snuggling, educator, an advocate, a loving hand and SO MUCH MORE!

🐾"Veterinarians don't just treat animals, they treat the people that love them" 🐾

Meeko came in today for a minor procedure. He was the bravest boy because he knew he was leaving the hospital as the most majestic lion! 🦁 (To be clear we are unable to turn one species into another species.. Meeko is in fact still a dog but we’re not going to tell him!🤫)

It's warming up outside & coincidentally it's Lyme Disease Awareness month!
If you're an avid hiker or someone who just likes to spend time in nature with your pup, make sure they have really good tick prevention. Good tick prevention can be oral, topical or collar.

⛺️ TIP! For the dogs with short fur -- after coming back from a hike or outside, take a lint roller and lint roll their body for any ticks hiding.

If your pet gets exposed to Lyme Disease, it can take weeks to months for any symptoms to develop. Typical first signs of Lyme would be arthritic like pain so think lameness, difficulty moving, etc. and some dogs will develop a fever! When positive for Lyme and treated -- response to treatment is very quick.

New England weather has many personalities and it seems to be only giving us warm temperatures in the winter months meaning, ticks aren't going away. If it's above freezing outside, your pet is at risk for ticks! Year round prevention is a MUST!!

💐🌞❄️🍂 Keep your pets safe in all seasons 💐🌞❄️🍂

Have you ever seen these spots on your pet and immediately panicked? Well, don't. These spots aren't Lyme disease or even Ringworm! They're most likely to be Black Fly Bites.

🪰Where do Black Flies like to live? Wooded areas & areas with high grass. They can also thrive in areas with water present.
🪰Where might I find these bites on my dog? Black Flies will almost always bite in the groin area and inner thighs (which is the area easiest for them to bite because the hair is thin and close to the ground!)
🪰What should I do if I find these marks on my dog? First off, don't panic. Second, let us know! We'll probably ask you to send us a quick picture so we can confirm.
🪰Can this be itchy or cause an allergic reaction? Not common but, anything is possible. If you notice your pet breaking out into hives or itchy, call your veterinarian.
🪰How can I prevent these bites? Avoid wooded/high grassy areas. They could be more active around dawn & sunset especially around areas with ponds/streams.
* There are currently NO FDA approved repellants that will help prevent these bites.

These bites will almost always resolve on their own and require no medical intervention. They almost always show up as a dark red circle then will turn into a more bullseye like appearance. Once they've reached the bullseye phase, they'll disappear! The mid-spring/summer season is the most active season for these guys. Again, usually nothing to panic about! 🪰💐☀️

Let's talk about dental treats!
There are SO many options out there but, do you know which ones work best for your pet? Earlier this week we posted about the VOHC. All of the products in this post have the VOHC seal of approval.
🦷The flavors/sizes/shapes in the pictures are NOT the only ones with the approval, there are other flavors/sizes/shapes (:

Did you know... Leptospirosis is very common in cities? Leptospirosis is spread by a bacteria carried in the urine of wildlife BUT, Rodents (Rats) & Raccoons are the most common carriers! Yes, we highly recommend this vaccine for patients who are nature enthusiasts, but we also recommend this vaccine for those who mostly stick to city life! Leptospirosis is also called a "Zoonotic" disease meaning, it can be passed from animal to human.
Just a little Saturday vaccine fun fact for you! 🙂

January 24th is "Change a Pet's Life Day".
There are so many pet's in shelters all over the world that are looking for a second chance. A lot of the time their situation as to why they ended up in the shelter is completely out of their control. While the shelter gives these pet's a nice warm place to sleep it's not the life they should have. Everyone has their preference when it comes to getting a pet whether that be from a breeder or a rescue but, adopting should always always always be something considered!
The dog or cat of your DREAMS could be sitting in the shelter waiting for you, right now! 💖
