Six people in the US have died of rabies since last September, and the CDC is tracking 14 potential rabies outbreaks in 20 states. Unvaccinated dogs are the leading cause of human rabies deaths worldwide, but thanks to the success of vaccination campaigns, dogs with rabies are uncommon in the US, and infected bats are the primary vector. Emergency physician Leana Wen explains who should consider pre-exposure prophylaxis, what to do in the case of possible contact with a rabid animal, and how to prevent rabies exposure. https://www.cnn.com/2025/09/18/health/rabies-animal-vaccine-disease-health-wellness

🐱 September is Happy Cat Month! 🐱

September is all about celebrating cats and their welfare. There are many ways to keep cats thriving, and starting with regular veterinary check-ups is crucial. Veterinarians can identify what a cat needs to be healthier, happier, and experience lower stress.

CVMA provides resources for veterinarians as well as pet owners, such as the "Find a Vet" tool and annual vaccine clinics.

While there have been no reported animal cases of New World Screwworm (NWS) in the United States, federal agencies are increasing efforts to prevent the spread of NWS, which threatens livestock, pets, wildlife, and in rare cases, humans, to the US. There has been one travel-associated human case in the US. The AVMA has created a resource page on the New World Screwworm, which can be found here: https://www.avma.org/resources-tools/one-health/veterinarians-and-public-health/new-world-screwworm

PET FOOD ALERT: Following up on a case of H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in a cat, testing performed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, state and local public health and agriculture partners, and federal partners suggests a link between the strain of H5N1 virus detected in the cat and in certain lots of RAWR Raw Cat Food Chicken Eats, a product the cat consumed before falling ill.
