This , help CVMF continue its mission of helping pets in need.

All CVMF programs are able to continue due to generous donations. Programs are focused on the needs of pet owners to provide a safe and healthy life for their pets - at NO Cost to pet owners in need. Please help to continue these programs by donating today.

The Companion Assistance Program offers low-income Connecticut residents vouchers of up to $125 to assist with the cost of veterinary care. As more practices participate and awareness of the program grows, CVMF relies on donations to ensure that the need is met and every pet in the state of Connecticut is able to receive necessary veterinary care.

Demand is also increasing for our Companions In Crisis program, which provides temporary, safe shelter for animals affected by domestic violence-related relocations or other emergency situations.

Donations to CVMF help us administer this program and provide funding to partner hospitals for necessary medical expenses while the pets are in their care.

To contribute, you can visit https://petsafetyct.org/annual-appeal/

Veterinarian Jocelyn Hogan at Fetch Emergency and Specialty Centers has created a new program to brighten up the kennels of cats and dogs spending the night away from home. Sketch for Fetch invites children throughout the region to draw pictures and write cards to be hung in the pet's kennels throughout their stay. Pet owners can take even home the artwork when their pet is discharged.

In addition to brightening up the pet's kennels, the program has fostered a sense of community support for the team at Fetch Emergency and Specialty Centers, serving as a reminder of the value of their work.

While your pet's sweetest begging face may be hard to resist, veterinarians caution against sharing your holiday feasts with your companions. While some common holiday foods are fine to share with your pets in small quantities, it's important to know what to avoid sharing in order to keep your pets healthy and safe.

Even safe foods should be given sparingly - new and unfamiliar foods can upset your pet's stomach. Keep an eye on your pets this season, and make sure your guests know the ground rules. Make sure to contact your vet immediately if you notice any symptoms of sickness. Behavioral changes in pets are often the first signs of aging. These changes might be due to discomfort or pain, such as when a pet is developing a condition like athritis, or due to a loss in vision or hearing. They can also be simply normal parts of the aging process. Aging pets can experience brain impairment, or cognitive dysfunction, similarly to how humans sometimes do. In this graphic, you can see some of the most common behavioral changes that indicate some level of cognitive dysfunction. Contacting your vet and describing the specific changes you've seen is the best way to get help with supporting your aging pet's brain function.

When does a pet become a "senior?" It varies! For cats, it's generally after 10 years of age. For dogs, it depends on size and breed and can range from 6 to 11 years of age.

It's important to remember that age isn't a disease - although older dogs and cats may develop age-related problems, regular veterinary examinations can help detect those issues before they become serious or life-threatening. Your veterinarian can help your pet live a long and healthy life!

The Connecticut Veterinary Medical Foundation (CVMF) has been fortunate to significantly grow our programming over the past year.

The Companion Assistance Program offers low-income Connecticut residents vouchers of up to $125 to assist with the cost of veterinary care. The number of vouchers issued per month has increased from 2-3 in 2022 to 40 in 2024. Demand is also increasing for our Companions In Crisis program, which provides temporary, safe shelter for animals affected by domestic violence-related relocations or other emergency situations.

As more practices participate and awareness of the program grows, CVMF relies on donations to ensure that the need is met and every pet in the state of Connecticut is able to receive necessary veterinary care.

Please consider donating today to help fund pet safety and care in our state. You can make your gift here: https://petsafetyct.org/annual-appeal/
