In honor of Memorial Day we’re remembering all those that served, soldier and K-9 🐾🇺🇸 Thank you all for your service. Below are a few fun facts about k-9s. 🐕‍🦺

Did you know?

A dog’s nose is at least 10,000 times more acute than a human’s, making them excellent detectors for drugs.

For example, if a human were given a cup of coffee with a teaspoon of sugar, he/she might be able to smell it. A dog can smell a teaspoon of sugar in a million gallons of water!

Dogs can also search an area four times faster than any human.

The number of years in the average law enforcement dog’s career is 6-8 years. Sometimes they can serve for up to 10 years, but it’s rare.

German Shepherds were the first police dogs. They were used in World War I, World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam wars to detect explosives like land mines.

Here is the info you've been waiting for....
🥁(drumroll please)... We would like to announce our very first Mural Photo Contest. We are so proud of the mural that was painted for our hospital last summer by Abstract Dissent and we hope our community is enjoying it as much as we are. We have people stop by and take pictures and people tell us how beautiful it is and we love that it is becoming a Caswell County, North Carolina landmark and now with the added lights, it can be enjoyed day and night. Sadly, we don't usually get to see the pictures that people take in front of our mural and we wanted to figure out a way that we can enjoy seeing you enjoy our mural..so what better way to do that than to have a contest! Here's how it will work:
STEP 1: We want you to stop by and take a photo of you and your pet in front of our mural (day and night)
STEP 2: Share the photos on your personal page. The photo must include you and your pet and you must tag our hospital, Carolina Virginia Animal Hospital, in each photo
STEP 3: In the post tell us and your friends about your pet and somewhere within that post you must use the hashtag in order to be entered into the drawing.
The contest will end on May 1st and everyone that does everything above will be entered into a drawing for some fabulous prizes that we will share in a separate post. You can also recieve more than 1 entry into the contest ⬇️

❤️ April is Heartworm Awareness Month ❤️

Heartworm disease is found in all 5️⃣0️⃣ states and it is a very serious and potentially fatal disease that affects dogs AND cats. Heartworm disease is transmitted through an infected mosquito. Even if your cat or dog is “indoor only” they are still at risk of being infected with Heartworm disease if they are not on prevention.

All pets should be tested for heartworms annually and should be on some sort of YEAR ROUND prevention. There is NO season for heartworms - it only takes 1️⃣ mosquito bite for your pet to become infected. If your dog is infected they can usually undergo a 6-8 week long treatment but it is expensive and can also be hard on them to have to go through. Unfortunately there is NO approved Heartworm treatment for cats so prevention is the ONLY way to keep them protected. We have many options when it comes to prevention and if you are unsure if your pet is protected then please give us a call and ask us for more information on how to keep your pet safe.

Today is National Golden Retriever Day! Golden Retrievers are ranked as one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Even though the breed has been around for over 100 years..In 2012, Kristen Shroyer created this holiday in honor of her pet Golden Retriever named Quincey that had recently passed away after being diagnosed with cancer. She chose February 3rd because that was Quincey's birthday. This day serves as a reminder of how amazing the love of a pet can be 💛🐾💛

Today marked the start of Pet Dental Health Month and now is a good time to discuss the importance of pet oral hygiene. We know that dental health is important for humans, but did you know that it's just as important for our furry friends? Poor dental health leads to serious medical conditions such as tooth loss and gum disease in pets, which can be difficult (and expensive) to treat. See the chart below to learn how to spot the signs of dental disease. If you've noticed any of these symptoms with your pet then maybe it's time to give us a call to schedule an appointment and have your pet checked to determine if they are in need of a professional dental cleaning.
