West End Compost Hub update! Over the past month, the site of the future West End Compost Hub has undergone environmental remediation. The site, which is leased to us by West Elmwood Housing Development Corporation, was a brownfield, and the soil was contaminated with lead, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH). Before we could build the compost hub, we needed to cleanup this site, which has been vacant for decades and had various industrial uses before that, contributing to the contamination. We secured funding from the RI Department of Environmental Management and the Rhode Island Infrastructure Bank to do this clean up, and after years of planning, the clean up is finally complete!
The remediation contractors started by removing trash and small vegetation from the site. They then ripped up and removed the old asphalt. Most of the hazardous contamination was in the northwest corner of the site, so they dig that up. There were higher levels of leachable lead in that section of soil than initially anticipated, so they mixed that soil with a binding agent to stabilize the lead before moving it to a disposal facility. Quite a bit of urban fill -- brick, cement, wood, metal, etc. -- was found as they dug, and it was disposed of along with the contaminated soil and asphalt. A total of approximately 600 cubic yards of soil was removed from the site. The contractors then leveled the ground, and it is now a ready and waiting blank slate for composting infrastructure. Part of the remediation includes a cap, which will be installed when the rest of the construction happens.
We are currently putting the final finishing touches on the designs for the compost hub, and will put the project out to bid in the next few weeks. If all goes according to plan, construction will begin in the spring!
West End Compost Hub update!
We officially broke ground last month on the upcoming West End Compost Hub! This site will not only serve as a hub for compost processing and distribution, but also a gathering place for environmental justice and urban stewardship education.
