Out of all the homesteading things I’ve tried so far (meat rabbits, coturnix quail, bees , chickens, Muscovy ducks) quail are my favorite!

After a run in with a few rogue bees yesterday and getting stung in the skull I decided that beekeeping just isn’t my thing. I’ve never warmed up to it and have always been scared of bees . I chose beekeeping so that if SHTF I’d be able to have my own sugar substitute. And I can always go back to it again but my favorite thing is quail and now I can focus more time on my quail breeding, hatching program, starter kits and so much more.

I built my first ever quail cage from dalesquails.com and I learned a lot and it turned out better than expected! Can’t wait to get it all set up for one of my falconers to start her own quail breeding program ! I know it might not look like much but I can barely put together a LEGO so this was a huge deal

Working on sound dampening insulation for the quail shed . Coturnix quail are not loud buuuuut when you live in Utah and the neighbors are close enough to hear you from inside your house ….they can hear the quail. My neighbors don’t love it so we are working on dampening the sound as much as possible and have a few quail friends coming in clutch and helping us with ideas. 💡 BEST ADVICE to you is to be as self sufficient as you can whilst not pi***ng off the neighbors and drawing attention to yourself . It makes life much easier

Taught an AMAZING class at .valley.university on raising backyard quail last night and it was so much fun!

My favorite thing is when I watch people realize for the first time you CAN be a lot more self sufficient in the city than you realize !

Quail Fact of the Day: can coturnix quail be free ranged???

No, they cannot. Coturnix don’t come back to a coop at night so if you let them free range they will not come back. Additionally, they don’t have many instincts left (because they’ve been bred for meat and egg production) so cannot protect themselves and would likely get eaten quickly. Consider these birds like you would a small pet, keep them secure in predator proof environments and don’t let them free range.

Cull Ruthlessly…

The words feel so harsh as I come from a background of compassion, empathy, & healing. I am passionate about many things, my birds being just one of them.

At the end of the day, no matter what you are working towards, cull ruthlessly. This goes beyond just a breeding program. Your success is only as great at what you allow it to be, even the people you allow in. Cull mindsets that don’t serve you, cull negativity, cull bad habits, cull unhealthy stress & relationships, cull things that kill your joy, cull poor stock, and cull those that do not support your growth.

Build a barn full of joy & beauty, surround yourself with those that empower you, the people that support your success, let go of ego & entitlement, teach kindness, always keep learning, and don’t ever allow others to dull your fire🔥 Do what is right, not what is easy, and the rest will fall into place.
