So I’ve recently gotten to know and become friends with an amazing breeder and she has been just amazing at teaching me genetics in a way I understand and can put into place on my small scale here. Her name is Rebecca Lynch and she runs ❤️

One thing she taught me and I immediately jumped on was a DIFFERENT way to create s*x link birds! I will still plan on offering my s*x link jumbo browns and Egyptians BUT last night placed an order for 3 more colors from my best friend who is an amazing breeder .guidroz.710 from so I can start creating a line of s*x linked tuxedo birds! If you haven’t seen tuxedos look them up! The pattern is a white bird with another color on its back and wings so it looks like it’s wearing a little tuxedo. Normally they are only able to be s*xed by 6-8wks old but if done correctly I can tell by the color which are boys and girls at hatch and I’m excited!

Due to the space I’m working with and a few other circumstances knowing which are males asap will just make life more organized .

Did you know…if you combine coturnix quail colors a certain way you can create chicks that are s*x linked??? That means as soon as the chick hatches you know if it’s a boy or girl ! Pretty cool huh?

You want to know what’s even more cool? If you’re a local I am currently selling s*x linked chicks so you can plan your flock accordingly.

Fun Fact:
Did you know despite their tiny size coturnix quail do amazing in wintertime ? They’ll even lay eggs all winter if you give them 14-16hrs of light!

Our shed is hardware cloth covered in plastic to keep them safe from drafts and moisture and as long as they have their food and water supply they are good to go! They are the critters I worry about the least in winter cuz they cuddle up and keep each other warm.

So you don’t need to wait until spring if you want to get started with quail-why not start now? They only need supplemental heat the first 2-3wks anyways and then they’re ready to go outside with the flock.

Today’s tip of the day is to get your kids involved with your homestead/farm/animal care. Maybe find them the fun but helpful jobs so they learn to enjoy it before sticking them with p**p duty 🤣

As my city kids have got more and more exposed to homesteading experiences they have better coped with things like 💩, 💀 and 🐝 flying around the yard . I’m so so grateful for the many things we can do whilst in city limits. And who knows maybe those skills will come in use and even if they don’t it’s such a great bonding experience to get out and go back to our roots. ❤️

This is me as a quail and the new logo I’m working on ;)

Here’s your fun coturnix quail fact of the day! They hatch in only 16-18 days and are butcher ready by 8-10wks old!

If you’re a hunter I’m told they taste exactly like dove and if you’re not a hunter (like me) it tastes like a mix between chicken and turkey-it’s not white or dark meat it’s kinda a cross in between and super yummy! It can even be eaten medium if you prefer as the risk for salmonella is incredibly low especially if you raise them away from other types of poultry and off the ground .

In 2025, I want to get back to our passion and our roots and that’s teaching how you can be more self sufficient in city limits-mainly through coturnix quail but we also have bees, Muscovy ducks and chickens.

Today I want to share a fun fact about quail and a big pro of having them!
⭐️THEY REQUIRE SUCH MINIMAL SPACE!

For every 3 sq feet you can have 3 adult quail! In our experience they get along best at this ratio and feel more safe so are more calm and happy.

So if you’re considering chicks this spring maybe investigate coturnix quail. You’ll be surprised how prolific and excellent they are in so many ways. Stay tuned for more fun facts each day and don’t forget to check out our Youtubd channel as well (link in bio)
