Working on sound dampening insulation for the quail shed . Coturnix quail are not loud buuuuut when you live in Utah and the neighbors are close enough to hear you from inside your house ….they can hear the quail. My neighbors don’t love it so we are working on dampening the sound as much as possible and have a few quail friends coming in clutch and helping us with ideas. 💡 BEST ADVICE to you is to be as self sufficient as you can whilst not pi***ng off the neighbors and drawing attention to yourself . It makes life much easier

Quail Fact of the Day: can coturnix quail be free ranged???

No, they cannot. Coturnix don’t come back to a coop at night so if you let them free range they will not come back. Additionally, they don’t have many instincts left (because they’ve been bred for meat and egg production) so cannot protect themselves and would likely get eaten quickly. Consider these birds like you would a small pet, keep them secure in predator proof environments and don’t let them free range.

Cull Ruthlessly…

The words feel so harsh as I come from a background of compassion, empathy, & healing. I am passionate about many things, my birds being just one of them.

At the end of the day, no matter what you are working towards, cull ruthlessly. This goes beyond just a breeding program. Your success is only as great at what you allow it to be, even the people you allow in. Cull mindsets that don’t serve you, cull negativity, cull bad habits, cull unhealthy stress & relationships, cull things that kill your joy, cull poor stock, and cull those that do not support your growth.

Build a barn full of joy & beauty, surround yourself with those that empower you, the people that support your success, let go of ego & entitlement, teach kindness, always keep learning, and don’t ever allow others to dull your fire🔥 Do what is right, not what is easy, and the rest will fall into place.

Quail Fact of the Day:

As chicks do NOT feed them chicken chick starter! Farm stores recommends medicated chicken chick starter for like everything BUT….
it is not what you feed coturnix quail chicks for 2 reasons:
#1 it’s too low protein -quail chicks grow feathers within 4wks and feathers are 90% protein so they really need that high protein to help them with their rapid growth . We recommend 28-30% gamebird starter OR 28-30% Turkey starter . Either one works and one or the other can usually be found at a local farm store.
#2 chicken starter is usually medicated and for a whole host of reasons that’s not great BUT for coturnix quail it essentially will overwhelm their system (like taking too much antibiotics when you don’t need it) so just avoid it. Plus the stuff it’s medicated for don’t usually occur in quail if they are housed properly .

As our farm stores here in Utah just started getting stocked with chicken chicks a lot of people have started researching which poultry they want this year and a lot of them are reaching out asking about coturnix quail SO…Here’s a quick reference guide I made for those wanting more info on coturnix quail! Theyre seriously amazing for us inner city people trying to be more self sufficient!
