Probably the most common issue I see with both owners and trainers. They’re so consumed with the intellectual—because that’s what the modern world has pushed and values—that they’ve lost any connection to their inner animal, the instinctual, their ability to draw on a believable but controlled fierceness.

And so they go around with endless technique and the fanciest of tools, whilst delivering both via an empty vessel.

This isn’t meant to be judgmental, it’s meant to be a helpful reminder. Your dog is playing a very different game, and holding you to a very different standard. If you’re using the fanciest of techniques and tools, and are still struggling, I highly recommend you step back and do an honest assessment of the least easy thing to develop—a believable you.

PS, a great way to check this out is to watch video of accomplished trainers working in serious scenarios, and push yourself to see past the techniques and tool applications and see if you can’t see something else in action. If you watch carefully enough, and if you’re watching the right people, you’ll see a human who is as deeply connected to their primal side as they are to their intellectual, modern, “sophisticated” side. You absolutely need both, but unfortunately current society only encourages and values one.

Somehow, the skill that is one of the most critical for a dog to have to in order to live harmoniously with us humans, is the skill that so many trainers and owners have missed.

Instead of developing a comprehensively well rounded dog, with both an on and off-switch, we focus obsessively on action. More commands, more play, more exercise—as if all that action will train a dog how to actually relax and be calm when needed, and not just the for the fleeting moments when they’re tired.

Folks, action—motion, doing stuff—is wildly easy for dogs. Being calm and still, especially in the face of tempting distractions, is anything but. And yet, most continue to blindly drink in, and act upon the old, overly simplistic adage of “A tired dog is a good dog.” No, a tired dog is simply a temporarily tired dog, and unless you’ve taught them specifically how to be calm, still, and chill when needed, you’re simply creating an athlete who doesn’t have an off-switch, and who will only need more and more action to be “a good dog.”

You’re creating a motion j***y, and you and your dog will pay the price.

Instead, teach all the aspects and skills your dog—and you—need to enjoy life together. While it’s counterintuitive, training dogs to do nothing for extended periods of time while the world goes on around them is one of the least taught and least understood aspects of successful dog training. And to be clear, this isn’t encouraging folks to not train action-based work, or play and exercise their dogs—no—what it is encouraging is to BE SURE to teach the less obvious but incredibly valuable skill of stillness and calm on demand. It’s encouraging folks to see that often what doesn’t look like much, and won’t impress your friends or colleagues, is the thing you’ll likely most enjoy (need!) when calm, quiet, and peace is desired.

If you’re struggling, and you’re doing all the action, perhaps take a step back and honestly assess how much time and energy and focus you’ve put on training stillness. In my experience, it’s the the thing most often missed, and as I said above, least understood.

The mental health of a dog is not only the most valued aspect of what we do, it’s also the most fun. Seeing a dog be free, in his natural element, is what it is all about. We are grateful for everything canines give to us. Here you see an F-16 and a Nuclear Submarine, each extremely useful and deadly in its own way. One is loud, precise, and fast. One is calm, quiet, and calculating. Both are incredible tools; we are blacksmiths and they are iron, forging them into our weapon of choice. We train every day, but it’s important to balance your training with fun, play, and engage your dog in natural and free ways, where they can enjoy their own kind. Your performance will only be strengthened!

Today we are Introducing K9 Rimco!

K9 Rimco is almost 1 year old and is training for HRD - Human Remains Detection. Rimco is a Hanoverian Hound, a breed created in medieval Germany to have exceptional hunting and tracking skills!

The purchase and training of K9 Rimco was made possible by a very generous donation from Rimco Scrap Inc, located right here in the City of St. Louis!

Rimco and his Handler FF Sevener are assigned to EH-1 in the Benton Park Neighborhood.

Did you know the K9 Search and Rescue Team is operated entirely on donations? Without the generosity of our sponsors we would not be able to provide this priceless service to the Region!

They’ve managed to convince everyone that they’re truly offering a viable, comparable, debatable training alternative. The truth is, anyone awake and who’s yet to be culturally lobotomized knows what’s being presented falls squarely in the insanity bucket.

The fact that this is obvious is causing so many of you to lose your own marbles trying to make sense of what isn’t sensible.

The critical connection point that opens the eyes to the reality of what’s going on—and which can help with the overwhelming frustration of trying to argue with insanity—is that this isn’t about whether PP/FF works better, or is even a viable alternative…that’s the crazy-making piece they want you focused on…the critical connection is they don’t care whether it works better or works at all.

They only care that it serves their emotions.

Once you realize that you can actually regain your sanity, and then address the actual issue…ideologically consumed people who have one god they worship…their emotions. Results don’t matter. Effectiveness doesn’t matter. You, and your dog don’t matter. The only thing that matters is that these people create world which supports and reflects their dysfunctional, delusional, pathological needs.

Fight the real fight.

While this should be obvious, it’s unfortunately anything but.

Owners, before you spend your money, please be aware of how the training process works. You’re paying us to lay a foundation and to then train you how to build on it and maintain it.

Dogs will happily “forget” all they know if not held to the standard of “remembering” by those they live with daily.

“Fixes” may look impressive initially, but they fall apart all too quickly if the trainer they learned from isn’t replaced by the trainer they live with.

We are so proud to share that two of our Hungarian bred Hanoverian Scenthound females were purchased by Texas Department of Public Safety. Once they finish training, they will be working on the Texas/Mexico border. We are so honored to receive the challenge coin and patch from TX DPS, we will display them proudly. It’s going to be exciting to see them perform in this capacity!
