First and foremost, I wanted to thank everyone that voted No on Proposition 129. As votes are still being counted, it appears this proposition will pass by a small margin. The passage of Proposition 129 introduces the new role of Veterinary Professional Associate (VPA) into our state’s veterinary landscape. This outcome raises serious concerns for the health and safety of Colorado’s animals, as the VPA role permits individuals to perform veterinary tasks without the depth of education, knowledge, experience, skill and accountability required to deliver truly safe, quality care. Veterinary professionals and animal advocates have long maintained that a high standard of education and skill is essential to providing compassionate, effective care—standards that myself, as well as the majority of Veterinarians across the nation, believe the VPA role, as outlined in Proposition 129, cannot meet. This is another way of corporate greed making their way into the veterinary industry 😢

Our fight doesn’t end here. Along with the CVMA, AVMA, and Keep Our Pets Safe coalition, we will continue to advocate for quality veterinary care that ensures the safety of Colorado’s animals. 🫶🏻

Great news!! This has been a long time coming 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 so glad they finally recognize Leptospirosis as a core vaccine. Of all the cases I’ve seen, none were vaccinated nor did they survive treatment 😭 this is why I always discuss the importance of vaccinating for Leptospirosis during your dog’s wellness visits!

🚨 Important Update: Leptospirosis Now a Core Vaccine for ALL Dogs
The 2022 AAHA Canine Vaccination Guidelines have been updated to classify the leptospirosis vaccine as CORE for all dogs starting at 12 weeks of age – regardless of lifestyle, location, or breed.
Why the change?
🌆 ALL dogs are at risk—urban, suburban, and rural.
⚠️ Potentially fatal, even with treatment.
🔄 Zoonotic—it can spread from pets to humans.
🏢 Dogs in daycare and kennels also face exposure risks.
You can find the full update in the Nov/Dec issue of JAAHA, or check out the full 2022 Canine Vaccination Guidelines here: aaha.org/canine-vaccinations

Myself, as well as the majority of Veterinarians across the state of Colorado, are urging voters to vote NO on Proposition 129. This is a dangerous proposition that will allow an untrained, inexperienced individual to perform surgery on your pets 😱 Leave it to large corporations, and unfortunately our own CSU Vet teaching hospital, to fork out millions into this proposition so that they can reap in the money in the long run. This is not beneficial to your pets, underserved areas, nor will this lower the costs of veterinary care. It just helps the large corporations make more money off a VPA vs utilizing a team consisting of a DVM and CVT’s/RVT’s.

Did you see Proposition 129 on the ballot? This dangerous measure would let someone who is not a veterinarian and who has minimal hands-on training perform surgery on your pet. Surgeries, even routine ones, can have serious complications, and only a licensed veterinarian has the expertise to handle emergencies or unexpected issues. It is time to vote NO on 129!

We are 2 days….2 DAYS away from Election Day!! Colorado Veterinarians are urging voters to please vote NO on Proposition 129!!

Coloradans are being urged to vote NO on Proposition 129. This dangerous measure lowers veterinary care standards and puts animals at risk. The claim that it improves access to care is misleading. For instance, VPAs would lack the expertise, training and federal authority to ensure pets get the right medications. Proposition 129 jeopardizes animal safety. Vote NO!

There you have it folks, large corporations are pouring money into this proposition with lack of regard or care for the pets and people that own them. Even when Veterinarians urge them to stop and think twice about what they’re potentially doing to our industry they could care less. DDFL, ASPCA, and even Mars corp. are all behind this. We cannot stand to see this proposition passed as it will put many patients lives at risk, increase the cost of veterinary care, and significantly reduce the standards of patient care and safety. Do not be fooled and do not let these corporations win this battle. Please vote NO on Prop 129!!

We need to rally for our CVT’s and RVT’s!! We need legislation to broaden their job duties and increase their pay to keep them in the field. They have the education and experience. A VPA would not fix the underlying problem at hand and will only increase the cost of veterinary care.

Proposition 129, which would create a Veterinary Professional Associate (VPA) role if passed, is sparking opposition across Colorado. In a Denver Business Journal article, veterinary professionals Dr. Melanie Marsden, Dr. Kelly Walsh, and Dr. Karen McCormick, raise numerous concerns about the role.

FACTS!! This is a great news article about the dangers of Proposition 129! VPA’s are not licensed veterinarians nor are they anything compared to a PA or NP!! Do not get misled by the lies you see about them. This will not bring care to underserved areas nor will it lower the cost of veterinary care. VPA’s are not the answer to the issue at hand. Let’s rally for our CVT’s/RVT’s for legislation to expand their duties to provide access to pet medical care!

Veterinarians across the state of Colorado would never want a lack of quality care performed on your pets especially when it comes to surgery, anesthesia, diagnostics, and dispensing medications for treatments. This election season we encourage you to VOTE NO on Proposition 129!!

Proposition 129 was strongly criticized by Dr. Sara Mark in a CBS News Colorado segment. She called the measure dangerous and morally wrong, warning that it would lower the standard of care and put animal health at risk across Colorado.

Colorado ballots are on their way to you. Double-check your registration status and brush up on all the important measures in this year’s ballot, including Proposition 129. If passed, this measure would dangerously alter pet healthcare in CO, allowing underqualified individuals to perform complex veterinary duties, which will lead to more risks, errors, and potentially higher costs for animal owners. Vote NO on Prop. 129.

About 4 weeks away from Election Day!! Remember to vote ❌NO on Proposition 129❌. This is backed by large corporations trying to take over the Veterinary industry. This WILL NOT lower the cost of medical care but it WILL LOWER the quality of patient care and you, the pet owner, will be taken advantage of. Do not fall for the lies that this will help pets in underserved areas. We need to rally for our registered/certified veterinary technicians and compensate them what they deserve! VPA’s are dangerous to your pets health care!

Colorado’s Dr. Andrea Palchak, a distinguished veterinarian and lifelong animal lover, shares her thoughts in The Denver Gazette on the dangers posed by Proposition 129. This misleading and misguided ballot measure is attempting to circumvent the experts and establish the position of a Veterinary Professional Associate (VPA), someone who would be able to perform surgery on animals with little education and minimal hands-on training.
