April is Heartworm Awareness month! Although heartworm transmission doesn’t have a “season” here in southern Colorado, it is always important to keep your pets up to date on their monthly Heartworm preventatives year round!
This is what can happen with your pets if not given their Heartworm preventatives and they contract Heartworm disease from a mosquito bite. The video shows a canine patient who presented with Caval Syndrome - a life threatening condition where heartworms accumulate in the right side of the heart and often into the vena cava. This is a very specialized procedure to remove heartworms with access through the jugular vein. This patient was able to survive this very costly procedure but lived the rest of their life with congestive heart failure. This procedure was performed in 2017 while I was in veterinary school and at that time costed >$5,000. Did you know that it costs less than $200/year to protect the average size dog from heartworms?! All it takes is 1 chewable tablet, once monthly, year round to protect your pets from heartworm disease!

Being a Fear Free Pets professional was one of the main reasons I became a house call Veterinarian! If you’ve ever noticed me examining your pets on the floor, this is why😊
We had a great turnout for the Rattlesnake Avoidance Training Class today! Thank you to everyone who came out to participate and an extra special thank you to our trainer Danny Upton for working with each dog today!! We are planning on hosting another training session next spring so be on the lookout for that announcement next year. Here is a clip from Sage’s training session today. She learned very fast to avoid interaction with the snake which is a beneficial way to protect your dog from being bit by a rattlesnake!
Happy 1st day of February (aka heart month)!! Here is one of my favorite cases from veterinary school. A canine patient presented with caval syndrome - Advanced stage heartworm disease - and the only chance of survival was to remove the heartworms blocking the right side of its heart by accessing its jugular vein 🫣 This ER visit + emergency surgery + days recovering in hospital costed the owners $6k+ 😬 And to think the cost of heartworm prevention for the lifespan of an average size pet is not even close to $1k.
This is why I’ll always recommend annual heartworm testing with year round prevention! Don’t let this happen to your pet! Prevention is key for a long, happy life 😁
So many vendors out tonight! Come on down and join the fun. We’ll be here until 8!
Wrapping up Day 2 in Texas! Thank you Palm Valley Animal Society for hosting a successful vaccine and microchip event! How awesome would this be to have in Pueblo?! #palmvalleyanimalsociety #healhousecallveterinarian #petcolove #bertodgenarena
