‼️Update on Veterinary Professional Associates‼️

I’ve contacted Representative Stephanie Luck in regard to House Bill 25-1285 regarding establishment and modifying requirements to the practice of veterinary medicine by a veterinary professional associate (VPA).

This bill is exceptionally well written to best ensure that animals and animal caregivers have transparency when in the care of a veterinary team. It also provides protection for the veterinary community by including that an employer cannot require a licensed veterinarian to supervise a VPA as a condition of employment, specifically by private equity owned clinics. To hold the supervising veterinarian accountable I do support the requirement to have documentation signed by both the veterinarian and VPA stating that the licensed veterinarian is responsible and liable for both actions and omissions of the VPA, and this documentation should be submitted with the state veterinary board.

If a VPA is found to be negligent they should be processed by the state veterinary board, with the same standards that are expected of a veterinarian. The VPA should carry their own liability insurance, or be insured by their employer.

I agree it is best to limit one VPA to a supervising veterinarian, and require immediate and direct supervision. I do not support VPAs doing surgery that involves organ/appendage removal or invasive open cavity procedures, or closure of holding layers. I value that this bill highlights establishing a valid client patient relationship (VCPR) and prescribing drugs are tasks that the veterinarian provides, which is in line with FDA laws. Especially in the current environment where we still face an opioid crisis, and ever growing antibiotic resistance (currently there are no new antibiotics being developed, so we must prioritize limiting overuse and inappropriate use).

This bill passed 11 to 1, soon to go to the House, giving huge merit to how logical these guidelines are for the functional regulatory framework of utilizing a VPA safely, while upholding the standards of veterinary care. We also need to continue to support the veterinary technicians, who will also be impacted by this.

Who is loving this warm weather right now?! You, me, and mosquitoes too! This is why I’m ALWAYS recommending year round heartworm prevention for your pets because there is no such thing as mosquito season or heartworm season. Gone are the days of only giving them their preventatives 6 months out of the year. Days like today are perfect for mosquitos to hatch, feed, and spread heartworm disease. Don’t risk your pets health, keep them on monthly or 6- or 12-month injectable preventative year round!

Protect your pet from this pest! Give heartworm preventive every 30 days or the 6- or 12-month injection for dogs.

Let’s talk about Labs!…..no, not these cuties but lab tests for your pets. 🔬💉
Did you know I offer vaccine titer tests for your dogs and cats after their first year of life!? 🐾 These tests help assess whether your pet still has sufficient immunity against diseases like distemper, parvovirus, and adenovirus for dogs and, rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia virus for cats.

But remember, before we can do titer testing, it's crucial that your furry friends receive their full series of puppy and kitten vaccinations first. 🐶🐱 These vaccines are vital for building a strong immune foundation during their early development!

✅ Why is titer testing important?

It helps ensure your pet is protected.
It can guide decisions about booster shots.
It’s an alternative to unnecessary vaccinations, reducing the chance of over-vaccinating.
💉 Let’s keep your pets healthy and safe! Call us today to schedule your titer test or to discuss your pet’s vaccination plan.

‼️Hey pet parents‼️ My system is automatically set up to register your pets microchip information with the National Registry Database. This is why I will always scan your pet for a microchip to ensure that their chip is registered to your contact info. The best part about it? It’s completely FREE!! Another great resource to register your pets microchip number for free is through 24PetWatch:

https://www.24petwatch.com

The closure of a pet microchip company sparks confusion, but AAHA's microchip registry lookup tool can help.
