SOCO Spay and Neuter Association

SOCO Spay and Neuter Association Our Mission: To promote and provide for the humane treatment of animals through affordable population control, education, rescue, and adoption.

The Southern Colorado Spay and Neuter Association (referred to as “SoCO” by the community) is a low-cost, non-profit, veterinary clinic that provides affordable, preventative care to the homed and unhomed pets of southern Colorado. As a well-established clinic, this non-profit has worked out of the same building, on the south side of Pueblo, since 1997; we have sterilized over 90,000 pets and prov

ided hundreds of thousands of vaccines to community pets without restrictions on income. In addition to our core mission, “to promote and provide for the humane treatment of animals through affordable population control,” SoCO operates an animal shelter and specializes in special-needs and hard-to-adopt rescue dogs and cats. Over the years, our programs have expanded to offer a variety of assistance, based on our understanding of the community’s needs. These programs include:
1) SoCO’s Bottle Feeding program has saved hundreds of orphaned neonatal puppies and kittens since its creation in 2018. The program offers other local shelters training courses, which provides the tools and knowledge our partners and volunteers need in order to establish successful bottle-feeding programs of their own. Our outreach and no-cost training increases life-saving opportunities and simultaneously decreases the strain that the infux of these fragile orphans have on area shelters.

2) SoCo provides sponsored TNR (trap-neuter-return) clinics throughout the year to help sterilize stray cats. Food is also provided to colony managers who are responsible for feeding the colonies for which they care.

3) Our SoCO Paw Responder team exists to provide the safe capture of scared or hard-to-catch dogs. The team has volunteered countless hours, dedicating themselves to safely bringing dogs home after they have endured horrific situations, including: surviving car accidents, getting lost from their families, or being abandoned. The team utilizes state-of-the-art tools and hand-crafted humane traps to safely return owned dogs to their families, or to get unowned dogs into the safety of our shelter where they are evaluated, vetted, and placed for adoption. The SoCO Paw Responder team has been called upon to assist all over the state of Colorado, and, in the last two years, our expertise has been requested from bordering states.

4) The SoCO Buddy Program was introduced as a way for individuals or businesses to sponsor some of our special-needs dogs and cats. A sponsor fee goes directly to the care of these rescues, which includes medications like insulin for our diabetic rescues, prescription food, treats, or enrichment toys.

5) The SoCO Barn Cat Program matches up feral, or semi-feral cats with area ranches/farms, providing free pest control and to also provide a safe place for these shy kitties to thrive. All barns are pre-approved to ensure the safety of the cat. SoCo boasts an incredibly dedicated staff of nine, which includes our staff veterinarian Dr. Kristin Ballotti, a hand-full of volunteers who want to help fulfill SoCo’s mission, and a supportive Board of Directors. It's National Black Cat Day so we want to introduce to you the magnificent Wednesday! This little girl created quite a whirlwind over the past month here at SoCO- she was relinquished after being found in the mouth of a dog. This resulted in her having a trip to the ER in Colorado Springs, then a transfer to the Internal Specialists for further care.

Wednesday had some significant damage to her chest/sternum which created a build-up of infected fluid around her lungs. This, as you can imagine, caused her to have a very difficult time breathing.
On the first night of her stay at the ER, the kind doctor there called to give an update and started the conversation with, "she won't stop making biscuits". During her time at the specialists, she had 2 chest tubes inserted to help drain the fluid from her lungs, a CT scan, and multiple ultrasounds. Many updates were provided daily, and the staff couldn't get over what an amazing, tough girl we had! She had won their hearts! There were also multiple staff members thanking us for stepping up to get Wednesday the care she needed, especially because they understood that we were going to have to pay for such a stay at the ER and Internal Specialists.

Some close friends of SoCO heard about Wednesday and her fight, and they jumped right in to help! Within hours we had artists and crafters in and around our city offering to donate creations of black cats for us to sell to help us cover the cost of Wednesday's medical needs! Her story inspired so many to help where they could! Classes were held at the library for felting kittens, 3-D black cats were created, paw print earrings are being made, paintings, paw print wallets, t shirts, crochet creations-we are overwhelmed with the love that is being shown for Wednesday!

We have purchased a booth at a craft event at the Pueblo Zoo on Saturday, November 9th, to sell the items donated for Wednesday! We hope to see many of you there that day!

If you would like to help us raise money for our beautiful girl, you can donate here through the Facebook fundraiser, or you can bring donated black cat creations to SoCO Mon-Weds for us to sell!

We are so grateful to say that Wednesday will make a full recovery, and that she is currently recovering in the home of her ICU nurse who will be adopting her!

This special girl who no one even knew existed has brought a huge group of people together. Their care and dedication to her story has already led us to begin a yearly fundraiser for SoCO- a Black Cat Ball (coming in the fall of 2025)! If only she knew about the amazing people who stepped up for SoCO, building a "bridge over troubled water" so we could do what we had to do to save our sweet little Wednesday.

We still have quite a bit of money to raise! Please help if you can, and if you can't contribute right now, please share!

Many thanks to all of the generous, kind humans who have already stepped up to help make this a happy ending! If only Wednesday knew how many people she had on her team...........

Last Sunday evening, I was doing what most people I know do on Sunday night: getting ready for the work week.

Little did I know, that while I was finishing up my laundry, and preparing for the week ahead, there was a silent group of kind people in Colorado Springs, having a meeting, where they discussed some stories about a couple of rescue cats at SoCO Spay and Neuter.

This group is a giving circle: a gathering of about 25 people who offer $100.00 each to a "pot". They meet four times a year, share stories of things they are passionate about, and then decide where they will give their money. They have named themselves "When life gives us lemons, we paint that sh*t gold!"

So, there I was, folding my towels when a picture popped up on my phone from my friend Cody. It was a picture of the giving circle, holding up a big stack of money!

Cody was the beautiful soul who shared stories of the SoCO rescues with the group because she had first-hand account of the dedication we have for them. Remember Buddy, the SoCO cat? You all worked so hard to help us secure funding to provide for his expensive medical needs, and Cody, who had followed his story closely, and also donated towards his care, became his forever momma.

I immediately burst into tears and called her. I was overwhelmed with emotion, thinking how the SoCO crew was likely doing what I was at the time, getting ready for another week's work. And while we were just doing our regular life's chores, there was a whole group of awesome people discussing how they could help us, and we didn't even know it!

On behalf of the staff, board, and our precious rescues who will benefit greatly from this donation, I'd like to thank the group from "When life gives you lemons", for quietly tip-toeing through the world, making it a better place! We love every single one of you!

***UPDATE: MIKEY HAS BEEN ADOPTED!!!!!

This gorgeous senior is looking for a forever home!

Mikey is neutered, current on vaccines, microchipped, and tested negative for FIV/FeLV/ heartworm.

We do not know of him to have experience with dogs, but he does well with cats. Due to his advanced age, we feel it best for Mikey to be in a home with cat savvy children over the age of 6.

If interested in adopting Mikey, please call or text Lisa at 719-250-0262.

Sweet Clementine came to us as a stray cat who was living at an abandoned house. A wonderful colony manager noticed her and began to care for her. Worried about her well-being, we were asked if we could take her- there was actually space available so Clementine was off the streets, vetted, and quickly adopted!

We share with you now, pictures of a Supreme Champion!

Clementine has won multiple awards in the short time she has been adopted, and we were honored one day when a bunch of those ribbons were given to us as a gift from her!

We are so proud of her, but mostly grateful for the wonderful adopters we have! No matter how many ribbons are won, a home and family to love is the biggest prize for the SoCO rescues, and we know Clementine is forever grateful to her family for adopting her: the ribbons are just frosting on the cake!

A note from the Executive Director:
SoCO (along with many local businesses) has been experiencing a high volume of trespassers over the past several months. We have reached out with courtesy, but that has been followed up with the utmost disrespect. Our facility has been overwhelmed with the trash, bodily excrement, vomit, and drug paraphernalia of these trespassers. Our staff has countlessly had to clean up the grounds, carefully wake up trespassers to let them know they need to leave, and make multiple trips in the middle of the night when our self-monitored cameras showed us that there were unwanted visitors doing unwanted and illegal things right outside our doors! We are happy that the Pueblo Police Department has stepped up their efforts to help us keep our staff, our rescues who utilize our little clinic as a sanctuary, and our facility/customers safe. At one point things were so bad that I thought our clinic may no longer be a safe place for our rescues! How could things have become so awful?
Luckily, a grant opportunity arose, we applied and were awarded. This grant covers a new security system to be installed with professionals monitoring it for us. For the past few weeks, while equipment was being ordered and arrangements made for the system to be installed, we have had a security guard posted over night, carefully watching our building and protecting our precious rescues who were sleeping inside.

Without this grant, none of this would have been possible. We feel so blessed to have this peace of mind during these troubling times in our city.

We would like to acknowledge the local company who has been so kind and caring and helpful: Hindsight 20/20 has provided us this security. Their security guard has gone above and beyond over the past few weeks, and the company has even given us a discount for the services of our wonderful guard. The new system is almost up, and Hindsight 20/20 will be monitoring our facility to ensure the safety of our rescues and our staff. The owner has been so caring and knowledgeable, ensuring they will do their best to keep SoCO safe! We feel so much better knowing that they are on our team. Thank you Hindsight 20/20 for protecting the most precious, innocent souls that we have vowed to care for!

If you feel compelled, please let them know how much their care for our amazing little clinic means to you! Here is a link to their page:https://www.facebook.com/share/63BDZJyvXwHB3sp2/?mibextid=qi2Omg

Pictured is Tang. Tang is a Manx kitten, suffering from Manx Syndrome. This is what we would refer to in the human world as spina bifida. Tang currently resides at SoCO and is one of many babies that Hindsight 20/20 helps us protect!

Happy 4th!

This post is to let you know that our Executive Director has full access to our files from home. This means if you find a lost pet with a rabies tag from SoCO, you can message her, and she will attempt to contact the owner!

Text her at 719-250-0262.

Information needed for rabies look up is easy- we just need the tag # and the year issued.

We only have access to SoCO files, so if the rabies tag was issued at another veterinary clinic, we won't be able to look that up.

Stay safe and secure your pets!
