SOCO Spay and Neuter Association

SOCO Spay and Neuter Association Our Mission: To promote and provide for the humane treatment of animals through affordable population control, education, rescue, and adoption.

The Southern Colorado Spay and Neuter Association (referred to as “SoCO” by the community) is a low-cost, non-profit, veterinary clinic that provides affordable, preventative care to the homed and unhomed pets of southern Colorado. As a well-established clinic, this non-profit has worked out of the same building, on the south side of Pueblo, since 1997; we have sterilized over 90,000 pets and prov

ided hundreds of thousands of vaccines to community pets without restrictions on income. In addition to our core mission, “to promote and provide for the humane treatment of animals through affordable population control,” SoCO operates an animal shelter and specializes in special-needs and hard-to-adopt rescue dogs and cats. Over the years, our programs have expanded to offer a variety of assistance, based on our understanding of the community’s needs. These programs include:
1) SoCO’s Bottle Feeding program has saved hundreds of orphaned neonatal puppies and kittens since its creation in 2018. The program offers other local shelters training courses, which provides the tools and knowledge our partners and volunteers need in order to establish successful bottle-feeding programs of their own. Our outreach and no-cost training increases life-saving opportunities and simultaneously decreases the strain that the infux of these fragile orphans have on area shelters.

2) SoCo provides sponsored TNR (trap-neuter-return) clinics throughout the year to help sterilize stray cats. Food is also provided to colony managers who are responsible for feeding the colonies for which they care.

3) Our SoCO Paw Responder team exists to provide the safe capture of scared or hard-to-catch dogs. The team has volunteered countless hours, dedicating themselves to safely bringing dogs home after they have endured horrific situations, including: surviving car accidents, getting lost from their families, or being abandoned. The team utilizes state-of-the-art tools and hand-crafted humane traps to safely return owned dogs to their families, or to get unowned dogs into the safety of our shelter where they are evaluated, vetted, and placed for adoption. The SoCO Paw Responder team has been called upon to assist all over the state of Colorado, and, in the last two years, our expertise has been requested from bordering states.

4) The SoCO Buddy Program was introduced as a way for individuals or businesses to sponsor some of our special-needs dogs and cats. A sponsor fee goes directly to the care of these rescues, which includes medications like insulin for our diabetic rescues, prescription food, treats, or enrichment toys.

5) The SoCO Barn Cat Program matches up feral, or semi-feral cats with area ranches/farms, providing free pest control and to also provide a safe place for these shy kitties to thrive. All barns are pre-approved to ensure the safety of the cat. SoCo boasts an incredibly dedicated staff of nine, which includes our staff veterinarian Dr. Kristin Ballotti, a hand-full of volunteers who want to help fulfill SoCo’s mission, and a supportive Board of Directors. Meet Otter!

This three-year-old spayed female was once a feral cat brought in a trap to be TNR'd. It was immediately noticed that her pelvis was not working the way it should-we took her in for x ray to find it had been broken (along with BB pellets throughout her body) and she quickly received surgery to repair it (and remove the BB pellets). Due to her injury, we did not return her to her colony, and she soon showed us that she was grateful for all that we had done for her! Otter is not fond of being picked up, but she sure loves treat time and will love and rub all over your legs- if you're looking for a good, quiet roommate, you may have just found her (we only suggest you keep a bag of treats ready for her)!
This sweet girl has been treated with cruelty by humans-can you give her a safe home where she can be happy and free from the fears she once knew? If interested in adopting Otter, please text Lisa at 719-250-0262.

It's about to start! Kitten Season is upon us!

In preparation, SoCO is looking for dedicated individuals and families to help foster.
SoCO provides all supplies and training.

What do we need from you?

🐾Dedication to care for neonatal kittens around the clock- newborns require feedings every 2 hours!
🐾 Personal pets must be current on vaccines
🐾 Home checks required
🐾 Significant level of dedication and willingness to commit to keeping the kittens for an extended period of time.

This is a very rewarding opportunity, but it does take a lot of time!

Please watch for future updates regarding bottle feeding training days!

Although we are frustrated that this picture is blurry, we are so proud to know this awesome man! We reached out to him for help building shelters for a colony of cats we were asked to fix. We wanted them to have some extra protection from the winter weather, so Roger spent his Christmas Day building these! It's important to keep the shelters camouflaged so as not to draw too much attention to them (not everyone wants feral cats around), and Roger painted them to match the area they were placed. This gives us such peace of mind to know these little furries we are helping will have some protection from the cold!
Thank you, Roger!

Meet Daisy!

This gorgeous flame point is looking for a home and a family of her own!

Sweet Daisy is shy at first, but after acclimating and feeling safe, she is incredibly loving and will even roll over on her back to have her belly scratched!

Daisy is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, tested NEGATIVE for FIV/FeLV/heartworm. She gets along with cats, but we are unknown about her behavior around dogs.

If interested in giving Daisy a home, please call or text Lisa at 719-250-0262.

01/07/2025

Due to the possibility of dangerous weather conditions, SoCO will be CLOSED on Tuesday, January 7th, 2025. If you had an appointment for this day, please know that we will be rescheduling your appointment ASAP.

♡FOSPICE SECURED!

"Squamous cell carcinoma? What's that?"

Precious River was relinquished to us with a very nasty sore on her entire ear! She was originally a cat living with an unhoused family, and when their "home" was taken from them, River found herself at SoCO. With the ever-amazing Dr. Ballotti on staff, a biopsy was done on her very scary-looking ear, and we were devastated to find out that our precious rescue was suffering from cancer!

With the cancerous skin removed, it was determined that River has a couple more good years to live! Can you offer our sweet girl a home and family to love during the time she has left?

If you think you can provide a safe, loving home for darling River, please call/text Lisa at 719-250-0262.
River does well with other cats- it us unknown how she feels about dogs.

River is spayed, current on vaccines, microchipped, and tested NEGATIVE for FIV/FeLV/heartworm.

When you support SoCO, you support our efforts to provide a safe place, medical care, and LOVE for rescues like River!

Have you ever heard of a "Snook Hook"?

In the veterinary field, it's known as a spay hook. It was created by Dr. Snook to retrieve the horn of the uterus while performing an ovariohysterectomy (spay) on a dog or cat, but we don't refer to it as a "Snook Hook". Why? Because the guy was executed for murder! Here's the story about Dr. Snook:

*head's up! There is explicit discussion in the link concerning testimony of a sexual nature.
