Each February, for four days the world comes together to admire birds during the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC). Participants spend time in their favorite places observing and counting as many birds as they can find and report their findings. This helps scientists better understand global bird populations. We hope you'll join us this year! 🐦‍⬛

Get in on the fun and do your part by visiting: www.birdcount.org

Today, as we celebrate Reverse the Red day, we highlight our collaboration with The Association of Zoos and Aquariums SAFE programs (Saving Animals from Extinction). SAFE species programs have introduced guests, volunteers, and community leaders to the threats facing wildlife and the solutions that allow people and animals to thrive together.

As a member of AZA since 1992, we are committed to spreading awareness to protect these threatened animals. Did you know that a part of your admission dollars are donated to this important partner in the fight to protect habitats and genetic diversity that avert extinction? Together we can truly make a difference! 🌎🐧

Tomorrow, February 7th, we celebrate Reverse the Red day, an annual celebration of all of the conservation work our collective community is doing to reverse trends of biodiversity loss.

🌍 What is Reverse the Red? 🌎

is a global movement driving collaboration and action to protect wildlife and ecosystems. By uniting top scientists, advocates, and partners, it leverages data-driven, science-backed strategies to combat biodiversity loss. This initiative equips governments, organizations, and communities with the tools and expertise to set and achieve conservation goals—while celebrating the wins that bring species back from the brink.

It's that time of year again when we turn our attention to our nation's most notable rodent for some rather unreliable weather forecasting. This morning Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, and according to legend, we can expect 6 more weeks of winter. We're not letting that get us down though. According to Stormfax Almanac, Phil's predictions have only been correct 39% of the time in his hometown of Punxsutawney, PA.

Groundhogs are the largest members of the squirrel family, and can weigh around 13 pounds. From head to tail they can measure up to 24 inches. They have long tails that can grow to 10 inches long.

Groundhogs are found only in North America, from Canada down to the southern United States.

They are the ultimate hibernators. While hibernating in their burrows, the groundhog's heartbeat slows from 80 beats per minute to 5 beats per minute!

Groundhogs are also called woodchucks or whistlepigs.
