Happy Chinese Lunar New Year! 🐍 Welcome to the Year of the Snake!

Here at Pueblo Zoo, we’re lucky to care for nine snakes. While snakes don’t eat every day, they still require daily care. Seven of our snakes need at least 70% humidity, which is quite a challenge in Pueblo! To help with this, we use automatic misting systems in our exhibits, and keepers manually mist them up to three times a day to ensure the right conditions. This also provides valuable bonding time—yes, snakes bond with us!

Keepers also ensure our snakes have an enrichment-filled environment, including live plants, a lighting and heating gradient that gives them choice and control, and structures that support their natural climbing and burrowing behaviors. Small environmental changes are made regularly to keep things engaging. Plus, our snakes receive routine veterinary exams to keep them healthy and happy!

With the cooler winter temperatures, now is the perfect time to explore our indoor areas and visit these incredible creatures!

Kalsang, our young male Sichuan Takin (born in mid April), sure is growing fast!

A few fun facts about Takin (rhymes with rockin'):

• Sichuan takins have a dark, bulbous nose with large sinus cavities, which warm up the air they inhale.
• They migrate annually between high and low elevations and inhabit the same areas as giant pandas.
• This species is decreasing in number. Takins are overhunted, but efforts to save areas with giant pandas may also benefit them.

It’s Penguin Awareness Day! 🐧 Did you know penguins play a vital role in balancing marine ecosystems? Their health reflects the state of our oceans, which impacts marine wildlife and even the fish we eat.

The African Penguin is critically endangered, facing threats from overfishing, oil spills, and pollution in their breeding areas. Even if you’re far from the coast, protecting them matters—healthy oceans benefit us all! 🌎

Want to help? Here are some easy ways to make a difference:

♻️ Reduce, reuse, and recycle plastics, aluminum, and other materials daily.
🐟 Choose seafood that is certified as sustainable whenever you shop.

Although we're bummed about being closed this weekend, we're thrilled to introduce the latest addition to our family. This week we welcomed this young Bactrian camel to the zoo, and we can't wait for you to meet him! 🐫

Fun fact: Bactrian camels are native to the steppes of central Asia where temperatures can drop below -20°F in the winter, and rise above 100°F in the summer!

Bison don’t just survive winter; they own it. With coats so thick that snow just chills on top instead of melting, and built-in insulation like nature’s version of heated seats, these beasts are basically walking winterproof tanks. Who needs layers when you’re born ready for a blizzard?

❄WEATHER CLOSURE❄ Be advised that we will be closed today, Wednesday, January 8, due to the weather.

What are snow days like at the zoo? For closures such as these, we have an amazing animal care staff that works hard to ensure the safety and comfort of our animals. Any animals that cannot tolerate the cold are held inside of the buildings, which are heated, and provided extra enrichment to help with stimulation. All animals are provided extra bedding and food to help keep them warm. Those animals that remain outdoors have sturdy shelters, extra bedding, and heated waterers at all times. Keepers routinely clear paths through the snow to ensure animals are able to get around to access food, water, and remain active. Some animals, such as our Pallas's cats, LOVE this weather, and become much more active than during the hotter months of summer! 🐾
