PAWS FOR LIFE/ANIMAL WELFARE AND PROTECTION SOCIETY

PAWS FOR LIFE/ANIMAL WELFARE AND PROTECTION SOCIETY The objective was to place each of these animals into a loving home. In its beginning there was no shelter facility. Thankfully, in March of 1980 Albert O.

Mission: To help lost or unwanted animals; to return lost ones to their owners whenever possible or after having them spayed or neutered, place them in good homes and to educate the public about intelligent & humane treatment of animals. PAWS For Life – Animal Welfare & Protection Society began in 1978 with the collective actions of eight individuals who saw the need, in Pueblo, to provide help an

d aid to abandoned, abused and unwanted companion animals. Care for animals was provided strictly through a foster home system but it quickly became obvious that the foster home system was limited. Large numbers of adoptable animals were still left to die in the streets or were subject to disposal at taxpayers’ expense. Pritz donated land at 3420 West 8th Street (off Pueblo Boulevard and 11th Street) and a shelter facility was built. This is where the current shelter still remains. In 1981 the PAWS For Life – Animal Welfare and Protection Society was incorporated in the state of Colorado as a non-profit organization and is recognized as a 501(c)(3) corporation by the Internal Revenue Service. PAWS For Life soon established a policy based on population control and adoption as alternatives to euthanasia and the organization began a campaign to focus public awareness on the increasing needs of helpless and homeless animals. In response to this, contributions from the public enabled us to construct a small, 10 run kennel. The shelter later expanded to 16 indoor access runs and four outside runs. In 2001 the shelter underwent a renovation project that made the shelter safer and healthier for dogs and staff and brought it into compliance with PACFA regulations. Our shelter presently has 26 runs and houses between 50 and 60 dogs at any one time. With donations from individuals and businesses, fundraising activities and an occasional grant as our only means of support we have been able to care for and adopt out several thousand animals into good homes.

We are so grateful to the thoughtful and talented Girl Scouts from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Pueblo County for their amazing support of PAWS for Life!

In December, the Scouts used their creativity to create artwork inspired by our adoptable pets. Their drawings, based on animals from our website, are truly special and will help bring attention to our furry friends in need of homes.

Thank you for visiting our shelter and sharing your wonderful artwork with us—we loved having you! Your kindness and talent will bring smiles to so many.

We can’t wait to display these beautiful pieces. Thank you, Girl Scouts!

We are incredibly grateful to the Pueblo West Women’s League for their generous $250 donation! Thanks to their support, we were able to purchase much-needed Kuranda beds for our dogs, giving them a more comfortable place to rest while they wait for their forever homes. We’re thrilled to celebrate our February Volunteer of the Month, Mike Bensik! Mike is an incredibly kind and generous friend who goes above and beyond to keep our shelter running smoothly. He helps with all aspects of maintenance, and today (his day off his real job) was no exception—while already working on plumbing issues in our bathroom, he was about to leave when disaster struck: the entire bottom of our food room sink fell out! Without hesitation, Mike turned right around, went to the store for the necessary parts, and fixed it with a smile. Every bit of his Labor and hard work is donated, and we couldn’t be more grateful for his support and generosity. Thank you, Mike!

From Mike-I like to volunteer at paws because it is a wonderful organization. My wife volunteers there as well, so I decided I would volunteer for maintenance task since I like to help out and do odd jobs and everybody that works there are great!

Meet Toby!Toby is a sweet 3-year-old who was sadly returned to us through no fault of his own. We’re hoping he finds a new home soon so he doesn’t have to settle back into shelter life for long.Toby is a calm and affectionate companion who loves nothing more than cuddling up and soaking in a good sunbeam. If you have cozy spots where he can curl up and relax, Toby would be thrilled to share them with you. He’s also playful and enjoys games with feather toys and other fun favorites.Toby is FIV-positive, but don’t let that worry you! FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) doesn’t mean he can’t live a long, healthy, and happy life. FIV is not contagious to people or other animals and is only spread to other cats through deep bite wounds. With a calm, indoor lifestyle, Toby can thrive just like any other cat.He would do best in a calm home with kids aged 10 and up who can enjoy his gentle nature and playful side. Toby can’t wait to meet you, so come by for a cuddle and see why he’s the perfect companion.Contact us at (719) 543-6464 or email [email protected] www.pawspueblo.org

Happy 11th Birthday, Nala!

Nala is celebrating her special day surrounded by love, but what she and her bonded buddy, Poe, truly need is a forever home.

These two playful shepherds may be a bonded pair, but that doesn’t mean they have to share everything—including their favorite balls! Watching them play side by side, each doing their own thing while staying close, is pure joy. Their energy is contagious, and they’re sure to bring endless fun to the right home.

Could that home be with you?

Sweetie pie Odin getting cuddles from staff member Lynden.

Odin may have had a rough start in life, but this 1- year old brindle Shepherd mix hasn’t let it break his spirit! Odin is a sweet, loving boy who has been let down by humans before, but he’s ready to find the right family to show him what true love and loyalty mean.

Odin is dog-friendly and absolutely adores his best buddy, Toby. While he gets excited and a bit loud when he sees other dogs, he’s full of energy and enthusiasm, ready to play. With his playful spirit, Odin will thrive in an active home, and will need a 6ft privacy fence to keep him safe.

We’re currently accepting applications to find Odin’s best match. He’s looking for a commited, patient owner who can keep up with his energy and help him feel secure in his forever home. If you have the heart and home for Odin, he’s ready to meet you!

We are overjoyed to announce that Miss Shay has officially found her forever home!

When Shay first came to us, her previous family felt she just didn’t fit in. From the start, we knew she needed a quiet, patient home where she could truly feel safe. Though she was timid and reserved, our team watched as she slowly began to trust and open up. We knew her perfect match was out there—it was just a matter of time.

After six months in our care, that perfect home finally found her! Her new family understands her need for patience and gentle love, and we’re already hearing that she’s starting to accept affection—when she decides it’s time, of course! Shay’s story is a beautiful reminder that every animal deserves a second chance. It may take time, but we never stop working to find them the loving homes they deserve.

Congratulations, Shay! Wishing you a lifetime of love and happiness in your new home. ❤️🏡🐾

We’re so happy to welcome back the students from Beulah Heights Elementary School this year! Every Tuesday, these dedicated kiddos spend time socializing our animals and helping wherever needed. It’s amazing to watch them grow over the years, and while we’ve said goodbye to some as they moved on to middle school, we’re excited to welcome a new group this year.

Even more exciting—this year, their student council will be joining us! We’re grateful for their time, excitement, and willingness to help.
