PAWS FOR LIFE/ANIMAL WELFARE AND PROTECTION SOCIETY

PAWS FOR LIFE/ANIMAL WELFARE AND PROTECTION SOCIETY The objective was to place each of these animals into a loving home. In its beginning there was no shelter facility. Thankfully, in March of 1980 Albert O.

Mission: To help lost or unwanted animals; to return lost ones to their owners whenever possible or after having them spayed or neutered, place them in good homes and to educate the public about intelligent & humane treatment of animals. PAWS For Life – Animal Welfare & Protection Society began in 1978 with the collective actions of eight individuals who saw the need, in Pueblo, to provide help an

d aid to abandoned, abused and unwanted companion animals. Care for animals was provided strictly through a foster home system but it quickly became obvious that the foster home system was limited. Large numbers of adoptable animals were still left to die in the streets or were subject to disposal at taxpayers’ expense. Pritz donated land at 3420 West 8th Street (off Pueblo Boulevard and 11th Street) and a shelter facility was built. This is where the current shelter still remains. In 1981 the PAWS For Life – Animal Welfare and Protection Society was incorporated in the state of Colorado as a non-profit organization and is recognized as a 501(c)(3) corporation by the Internal Revenue Service. PAWS For Life soon established a policy based on population control and adoption as alternatives to euthanasia and the organization began a campaign to focus public awareness on the increasing needs of helpless and homeless animals. In response to this, contributions from the public enabled us to construct a small, 10 run kennel. The shelter later expanded to 16 indoor access runs and four outside runs. In 2001 the shelter underwent a renovation project that made the shelter safer and healthier for dogs and staff and brought it into compliance with PACFA regulations. Our shelter presently has 26 runs and houses between 50 and 60 dogs at any one time. With donations from individuals and businesses, fundraising activities and an occasional grant as our only means of support we have been able to care for and adopt out several thousand animals into good homes.

Happy birthday Shelby! 🎂💓Meet Shelby, a stunning seven-year-old Shepherd mix who was returned to us through no fault of her own. This sweet, energetic, vocal girl is full of life and ready to embark on her next adventure! Shelby walks nicely on a leash, though she can get a little excited at times. She would thrive in a home with children aged 10 and older, as her enthusiasm might be overwhelming for younger kids. If you’re searching for a spirited and loyal companion, Shelby could be the one for you! While Shelby previously lived with smaller dogs, she did not do well during recent dog introductions at PAWS. Because of this, she would do best as the only dog in her new home.Ready to meet Shelby? Visit us at www.pawspueblo.org or call 719-543-6464.

As a new year begins, we're reminded of our vital role in animal welfare and our support for Paws for Life: giving voice to the voiceless. We must be the champions of those who cannot speak for themselves, even when it's difficult. And when it’s really hard, we remind ourselves that the reward of aiding a vulnerable animal makes every effort worth it………If not you, then who?

Our first packwalk of 2025 was chilly!! But the dogs loved it, and our hearty volunteers were awesome to show up and walk. Thank you to everyone involved!

Happy New Year!

Meet Scarlett! This gorgeous Australian Shepherd is as intelligent as she is striking. Scarlett arrived at our shelter as a stray, so her past is a mystery, but her gentle, soulful nature shines through. Though she’s a bit anxious and shy at first, with patience and love, Scarlett is sure to blossom into a devoted and confident companion.True to her breed, Scarlett thrives when she has a job to do and would excel in activities like agility training or other stimulating tasks. The shelter environment has been hard on Scarlett, and she’s yearning for the peace and stability of a loving home. She’ll do best with someone experienced with Australian Shepherds, who understands her need for structure and mental stimulation. Scarlett needs to be the only pet in the household to ensure she gets the undivided attention she deserves. She’s also best suited to a home with older children who can respect her boundaries and provide a calm, supportive environment.A talented jumper, Scarlett can clear a 6-foot fence with ease, so a secure privacy fence and a safety-conscious family are a must. With the right people willing to help her feel secure and build trust, Scarlett will thrive and shine as the incredible dog she’s meant to be.If you’re ready to give Scarlett the forever home she deserves, she’s ready to meet you and start her next adventure! in

Please join us in celebrating Maria Martinez, our incredible December Volunteer of the Month! Maria wears many hats here at Paws For Life, and we couldn’t be more grateful for her dedication and hard work.

As both a pack walker and an in-shelter volunteer, Maria goes above and beyond. From prepping Kongs and chicken for our pups to tackling laundry, sweeping, and washing dishes—Maria truly does it all!

From Karen Porter, our incredible Packwalk leader, whom we appreciate more than words can express!

As we close 2024 I would like to thank everyone involved with packwalk! The volunteers are so dedicated and love these dogs so much! Thank you for brightening the day of a shelter pet! The staff is super getting dogs in and out to us. They share what they know about each dog which is so helpful to the walkers. Thank you for assisting us! Thank you to Vickie for her great photos. It’s so useful to highlight our animals on social media. Thank you for joining us on packwalk! For the volunteers who bring treats, water, chicken, p**p bags etc. Mary, James, James, Judith, Kelly- thank you! Diane has been a tremendous co-leader bringing expertise, leadership and experience. We could not have packwalk without her! Thank you so much! Last but certainly not least, thank you to Isabel and Lisa who have been the tremendous leaders we needed at the shelter for this last 3 years. It would be an understatement to say they have built Paws into an amazing place. Their dedication is unparalleled and their commitment to our mission is unwavering. From the bottom of my heart, thank you!

I’m sorry I was unable to get pictures today. Thank you Marissa, Nan, Alex, Maria, James, Judith, Kelly, Vanessa, Patrick, James, Wendy and Nina for walking in the cold!

A heartfelt thank you to Bryce Ray, a talented golf professional and Pueblo native, for her outstanding support of PAWS! Bryce isn’t just known for her golfing skills—she’s also a dedicated animal lover and volunteer. Alongside her husband Richard, she has been a tremendous help, from assisting with Packwalk and socializing our cats in the cattery to lending her expertise during our golf tournament.

Please join us in thanking Bryce for her kindness and generosity.

It’s taken us some time to let the sadness settle, but today we share the heartbreaking news that our sweet Buddy passed away at the age of 13. Buddy crossed the rainbow bridge surrounded by the unconditional love of his devoted foster parents, Kelly and Anthony Galindo.

Buddy came to us after spending 10 long years living on hay in a horse trailer. Despite his difficult beginnings, he had a heart of gold and a gentle, loving spirit that touched everyone who met him. We knew his time with us would be limited, but our goal was clear: to ensure his final days were spent in a warm, loving home where he could feel safe and cherished.

Towards the end of his journey, we learned that cancer had spread throughout his body. Though his time was far too short, his final chapter was filled with love, comfort, and grilled steak thanks to Kelly and Anthony. His ashes now rest with them, where they belong, as they gave him the home and love he so deeply deserved.

Buddy was a beautiful soul who will remain forever in our hearts. Thank you, Kelly and Anthony, for being his angels on Earth. Rest easy, sweet Buddy—you are so loved and will never be forgotten. ❤️
