With changes in pet food regulations, new formulations, repeated recalls and company buyouts shaping the pet food landscape, it’s more important than ever to know how to choose the right brand for your dog.

This Monday, we're kicking off our highly anticipated 2025 Pet Food Review to give you the tools you need to pick the best pet food for 2025, no matter your budget. Whether you're feeding a high-end kibble or a more affordable option, we'll help you navigate the ever-evolving market and ensure your pup gets the nutrition they deserve.

Veterinary nutritionists, pet food formulators and industry experts are joining us to take an in-depth look at top-selling dry dog foods. We’re covering everything from budget-friendly brands to premium and veterinary prescription options. But here's the catch: Top-selling doesn’t always mean top-quality.
We’re reviewing over a dozen dry and air-dried dog foods, including brands like Farmina, Purina Pro Plan, Open Farm, Blue Buffalo, Acana, and more. We'll also cover:

⭐️ How to evaluate kibble and identify top-quality ingredients
🐶 Are feeding recommendations making your dog overweight?
🔎 Do companies' claims hold up under scrutiny?
🏭 The impact of formulation changes, regulatory shifts, and company acquisitions on pet food quality

Plus, stay tuned because in the coming months, we’ll be reviewing gently cooked, freeze-dried, and fresh pet foods as well. There’s a lot to cover, but we’re here to help you make informed decisions that fit both your dog’s needs and your budget.

We hope you'll join Monday, Jan.20th at 11:30am EST live on the Inside Scoop! (edit to new time)

Comment SCOOPERS and we'll message you the link to join Inside Scoop, a Planet Paws monthly subscription group. All live podcasts are recorded and available to watch later. You’ll also be able to watch over 5 years of content including: past live podcasts, interviews, ebook downloads, and more!

Hey guys! We have been getting some questions about Avian Flu H5N1 and the safety of raw foods.

The raw foods that we sell are some of the best in this industry. The way that these companies operate in regard to sourcing and testing are especially important when we are dealing with any safety issue. These companies have ALWAYS had measures in place to provide healthy and safe food to their customers.

All of the humanely raised and harvested meat that these companies source is human grade and regularly inspected by the USDA. All animals are tested for Avian Flu H5N1 BEFORE harvesting and cannot be used in the human grade food chain if that test does not come back as negative. If there is a positive result, the flock is destroyed. Millions of flocks have been destroyed and is a main reason why egg prices are so high-if the grocery store has any eggs at all.

If you do feed raw food to your pets, the most important thing is to make sure that the ingredients are only sourced from human grade sources. When a pet food company sources human grade ingredients (all of our raw foods), the animals they use have had testing, and therefore, should never be contaminated with Avian Flu.

An issue like this is one of the reasons we are so picky about the products that we recommend to you.

For more information, a discussion by the well respected Dr. Judy Morgan has been provided.

WE ARE RUNNING LOW ON KENNEL SPACE!

Our Colorado Springs and Pueblo shelters have taken in 148 dogs in the last five days. Our intakes are steady at nearly 30 dogs a day. This isn't usually a problem, but unfortunately, for our dogs, adoptions have been very slow.

Our dog kennel space is filling up fast, and we need help from our community to encourage adoptions!

We have puppies from two months old to sweet seniors at 15 years old and active running buddies to happy couch potatoes! With this many dogs in our care, we are sure to find the perfect pup for you.

If you aren't looking to adopt right now, sharing this post is the next best thing, as you may help us reach someone who is! If you are interested in adding a furry family member, please consider stopping by the shelter and meeting one (or two) of our dogs who deserve a second chance!

🥓 Palatants are often used to enhance the taste and odor of poor quality dog and cat foods.

🤩 Consumers are drawn in by advertising on labels touting "filet-mignon flavored" or "wild-salmon flavor", when in reality, filet mignon and salmon are not even ingredients in the pet food. The palatants are added to give off the distinctive taste and smell.
Palatants are used more often in kibble than in canned products. Palatants may be a combination of refined animal fat, lard, used restaurant grease, and other oils that are sometimes considered too rancid or inedible for human consumption. The fat may be a by-product of rendering, or melting down animal carcasses using high heat or enzymes.

🐱Chemicals called pyrophosphates are used to coat dry cat food, and are often referred to in the processed pet food industry as “cat crack". Mixing pyrophosphates (phosphate salts) with meat hydrolysates is an effective way to entice cats to eat dry food that they otherwise would not.

🤢 Animal Digest may also be utilized. Animal digest is liquefied slaughterhouse leftovers and can vary in the same food from batch to batch. True palatants, in the ingredient panel as natural flavors, are scientifically formulated and don't change from batch to batch. Digest is an industry euphemism for a soup of partially-dissolved intestines, livers, lungs and miscellaneous organs of animals, produced using various enzymes and acids. The precise ingredients used are trade secrets, which, in differing combinations, produce varying flavors. Batches considered to taste more like beef can transform a can of miscellaneous body parts into “Beef Stew”, while those considered more “fishy” may result in “Wild Salmon” and so on. Digest is probably the most important factor discovered in recent years for enhancing the taste of dry food.

With all of the recent worry about the possibility of certain dog foods getting dogs sick, we want to highlight why we are so picky about the products that we carry.

Our main priority is to put products in front of our customers that we trust. From the quality of ingredients to the finished product. This is why we make sure that the companies we recommend are using human grade meat (most dog foods don’t), and are regularly 3rd party testing their products for nutritional adequacy and safety.

We believe us pet parents have been in the dark for too long in regard to the way dog food is produced. We believe that we shouldn’t be confused about the safety of any product that we purchase for our pets. And we believe in a better future for this industry.

Reach out to us with all of your questions! As always, we can’t wait to provide your pets with food that you will feel good about feeding them!

1/10/24 update: more brands https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=965255491625961&id=100044245578564

If you believe ANY BRAND of pet food is causing or has caused illness or death:
Stop the food immediately.
Report it to the FDA: https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/report-problem/how-report-pet-food-complaint
Contact your veterinarian. Request a copy of your pet's medical records. Report your concerns to the pet food company and ask your vet to do the same.
PLEASE COMPLETE THIS SURVEY https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/S8SMQGD

*Update as of 1/4/24 - 213 dogs and cats (155 dogs, and 58 cats) sick eating Purina, 57 of which have died.

Since 12/5/23 in the 'Saving Pets One Pet @ A Time' group on Facebook there have been 48 dogs and 3 cats sick eating Purina, 10 of which have died. It seems to be from all different types of Purina, with Purina Pro Plan being the most common. If you or someone you know is feeding this food, I would stop immediately! Do NOT wait until your pet gets sick or Purina issues a recall.

Join the Facebook group 'Saving Pets One Pet @ A Time' for additional information and resources.

info from Savings Pets One Pet @ a Time:

"Stop the food immediately. Post in the group above what your pets current diet is and medical conditions and we will help you find a more nutritious and safer diet.

Save the pet food. Do NOT release it to Purina in any circumstances.

Contact your vet and request a copy of your pets medical records. Ask the vet to report your concerns to Purina.

Report it to the FDA (https://truthaboutpetfood.com/report-a-suspect-risk-pet.../)

Report it to Purina (https://www.purina.com/contact-us)

Do NOT agree to send them the food. If you feel compelled to do so, only send a small portion. Keep the rest of the food in the freezer.

Do NOT send the medical records to Purina.

Document your conversation with Purina.

Purina may eventually say they will pay your vet bills and reimburse you for your pet food. If you agree to this they will ask you to sign a form which will prohibit you from taking legal action. Eventually, if there is a class action lawsuit you will be unable to join if you do this or if you want to file your own lawsuit.

Consider getting your pet food tested:(https://truthaboutpetfood.com/help-to-check-your-pet-food/) This would be helpful if you want to pursue legal action.

Purina has already been notified by numerous pet owners and they have not done anything to alert unsuspecting pet parents. Initially, there were offering to reimburse the pet owners for their pet food. Currently, they are offering pet parents $10 in coupons (which is what Hills offered me for my dead dog) and having a third party contact the pet parents.

Eventually, we may see Purina pet food become “unavailable” on the store shelves. This is called a silent recall. The pet food manufacturer doesn’t want to admit there is a problem with the product, so they start pulling the products off the shelves quietly. (Hills did this for 60 days before the recall)."
