Just around the corner!

The 2025 Re*****on Park American Quarter Horse, Paint and Appaloosa Season begins Thursday, March 6. The 50-date session will bring the top horses from around the country to battle for stakes purses estimated at nearly $5.4 million.

The coffers on Champions Night, the final evening of the season on Saturday, May 31 will top $2 million with a program of 12 stakes races. The richest event on Champions Night, and for the season, is the Grade 1, $1,000,000 (estimated) Heritage Place Futurity.

The 2024 Heritage Place Futurity race is for 2-year-olds racing 350 yards. Kempton, the Champion 2-year-old at Re*****on Park by virtue of an undefeated season and winning the 2024 Heritage Place Futurity, ended the year as the top juvenile Quarter Horse c**t in racing with $639,903 earned. The Kiss My Hocks c**t, out of the Corona Cartel mare Charming Cartel, won $454,364 of that in the Heritage Place. He was owned by Mariano Lozano-Cantu, trained by James Gonzalez III, and ridden to victory by James Flores.

Jess Good Wine, the 2024 Re*****on Park Horse of the Meet, won all three stakes races he ran in including the top race for older horses – the Grade 1, $256,400 Debbie Schauf Re*****on Park Championship. The race will also be featured on Champions Night. Jess Good Wine, who was a 4-year-old Oklahoma-bred son of Good Reason SA, out of the Mr Jess Perry mare Mr Perrys Wine, was second nationally in money earnings last year at $473,930, behind Empressum ($504,750) who won the 2021 Re*****on Park Derby during his time locally.

Jess Good Wine is owned by Guns Up Racing and was ridden at Re*****on Park by Bryan Candanosa. The horse went on to win the Grade 1 All American Gold Cup Stakes at the Downs at Albuquerque on Sept. 2 and then ran second to Empressum in the top race annually for older horses, the Grade 1, $800,000 Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos in California.

The stakes schedule this year includes 11 Grade 1 open company events. That number jumps to 14 when including the three Grade 1 restricted races of the Re*****on Park Futurity, Derby and Dee R***r Sooner State Stakes take place on Saturday, April 19. That trio of stakes races are limited to Oklahoma-breds but still have powerful purses. Coal Battle | Coady Media

By Bill Finley

Prep season for the GI Kentucky Derby is still in its earliest stages, but a couple of races over the weekend gave us some things to get excited about. It appears, in GII San Vicente Stakes winner Barnes (Into Mischief), we have an early Derby favorite that could give Bob Baffert his first official Derby win since Authentic (Into Mischief) in 2020 in what would be his return to America's most famous race after the Churchill ban. Sold for $3.2 million at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga, this could be a special horse.

But we also have this year's dark horse, the type of underdog everyone can get behind, a modestly bred 3-year-old named Coal Battle (Coal Front) who is trained by Lonnie Briley. He won Saturday's Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn, beating horses trained by Peter Miller, Wayne Lukas and Brad Cox. For Briley, a soft-spoken 72-year-old trainer from Louisiana, it was the biggest win of a career that started in 1988. Prior to that, he was the long-time farm manager for the late John Franks.

Since going out in his own in 1988, Briley, who races primarily at Evangeline Downs, Delta Downs and Fair Grounds, has won 338 races, but he's yet to win his first graded stakes race. The Smarty Jones is a listed race.

Mo Quality’s dam, Revealing Quality spent time at both Red Earth Training Center and WestWin Farms before being sent to Kentucky for her career as a broodmare. So far so good!

Trainer Chris Davis said: "There’s a reason why I ran him 6 Β½ twice, instead of going three-quarters or 5 Β½ with him. He’s just a horse that the farther he goes, seems like he just gets better.”
