About 70% of horses will develop wolf teeth in their lifetime, and they usually have emerged from the gums by 1-2 years old.
These teeth are not necessarily detrimental to a horseโs health, but they are usually removed in horses that will be used under saddle.
We remove these teeth to prevent interference with a bit and/or trauma to the soft tissue around them-ultimately causing soreness or issues in the bridle (head tossing, fighting the bit, etc.)
๐๐๐ง๐ฒ years ago, these teeth were used to chew tough grasses, twigs, and brush in the wild. Since the domestication of horses, these teeth are now underdeveloped and are no longer of use to them-kind of like wisdom teeth in humans!
Removing these teeth before a c**t or filly is started under saddle is a very common practice in the performance horse industry as well as most equine athletic disciplines!
If you have a two year old about to go to a trainer, itโs very important and can improve a horseโs trainability tremendously to have these teeth pulled during their routine dentals!
