Since we missed the Mississippi State Fair we decided to load up a few of the girls and take them to the South Mississippi Fair in Laurel. These afternoon shows sure wear you out, but I’m so proud of my kids…they have worked hard this year and it’s showing❤️

Today was Linear Appraisal…and to say I have been looking forward to this day is an understatement!!! We are a new herd and completed our 2nd kidding season this Spring. Let me tell you I learned soooo much!!!! If you’ve never been appraised and want to learn more about your goats I HIGHLY recommend it!!!

I came into today with no real expectation for scores, but hoping to learn as much as I could about my goats. I learned how body conformation lends into biomechanics as well as production and longevity…and had several other light bulb moments. While Linear Appraisal and the Show ring all follow the same score card it’s so fascinating how they are applied.

I was over the moon with our scores and am so excited to use this information to progress our herd! We dropped down to 1x a day milking a week or so after our Labor Day weekend show…and while some of our girls took 1x a day milking as a signal to dry up a couple never skipped a beat.

For the Nigerians…Lovey’s production dropped immediately and she went uneven when we dropped to 1x a day, Darbi has had a slight increase in over all production since February…she struggled after kidding and after discovering a tooth issue she’s improved. Aspen has been our best Nigerian milker this season, she freshened with much more capacity than her FF year and has managed to maintain that throughout her lactation. And for the scores:

My Alpine girls have a very bright future as well. They are both FFs this year and have done so well! Our Appraiser loved Syrah’s General Appearance…and was our highest scoring doe in Dairyness, Rump Angle, Rump Width, Rear Udder Height and Udder Depth! BUT it was our “Ava” who took appraisal by storm and shocked the mess out of me and Jason! Had she not been a FF we may have seen a score in the 90s!!

Audrey and Avalon won Reserve Grand as a FF in two rings this weekend at Browsin’ the Pines in Meridian! If you have to lose it may as well be to your dam that’s a 3F! A big goat for a little girl, but she loves her❤️

Of course Happy decided to release her hostages on the hottest day of the year in the middle of the day🥵 💙💙💖

We will be contacting those on our list and will post any available kids after they have had time to respond. Happy is the only doe with Fall kids this year as Hope decided she didn’t want to have kids🤦🏻‍♀️

We brought our own competition for the registered goats for the First Dairy Goat Show at the Neshoba County Fair, but the kids had a great experience for their first 4H event and this mama couldn’t appreciate the MSU Extension Office, Neshoba County Fair, and Judge Alana Cecil more for all their guidance in preparation and patience and sharing of wisdom in the show ring! We look forward to next year! Fair photos to come!

DD is CH pending and SD is SGCH, both have earned their milk stars.

Lovey is a 3yo 2F that has really shown some added capacity this freshening. I’d love to do a one day milk test with her since our schedule doesn’t support being on milk test. I feel she does have the ability to earn her milk star.

Lovey kidded as a FF with quads 3B/1D. This year as a 2F she gave us triplet does and has dam raised them fabulously without the slightest bit of trouble.

Lucky is currently signed up for the Southern Browsers - Browsin’ the Hub City Youth and Open Show May 5-7, 2023. She will be weaned after the show and ready for her new home.

Photos of Lucky are older, but we hope to get some updated pics when we get her show ready!

We bred Camelot Hills Lady Avalon 4 times this past Fall were convinced she didn’t take. November I made a last effort and used a Nigerian buck…I guess it worked! She kidded on her own with a very adorable 5.6lb Mini Alpine this morning🎀❤️

Spent the weekend in Ruston, LA for our final show of the year. Lots of praise to LDGA for a great event and all the sponsors and silent auction winners that allow these shows to continue! Thank you so much GTB Farm Circle M Farms, LA, LLC. Southern Maids Dairy and other youth show sponsors. Your generosity has allowed Audrey the opportunity to gain confidence and learn. Judge Cade Cockburn took the time for a showmanship clinic before the youth show and was able to speak to the kids on all levels…Audrey is still talking about the butterfly maneuver❤️ This weekend was never about ribbons…we enjoyed mother/daughter time and also time with other goat show friends that sometimes feel like family…however I am so proud of Audrey and our little homebred to be able to hold their own in a nice Junior doe class!
